stuck in USB slave

My Vega arrived this afternoon. Flashed r6 and set about learning Android. Installed some apps and played some Angry Birds. I then wanted to copy some videos over from my USB stick... went to usb mode and clicked host, and it hung at the restarting screen. I have reebooted and toggled between the two modes a few times but it hangs every time. I have just installed the very handy widget just posted on the other thread and can see I am in slave.

Any ideas? Am I really going to have to enter recovery/reflash already?! That would be a new personal record for me

My worry is that host isnt working on my unit, as I have never used it.

This may be a silly question .... Is USB mode host/slave only available in the kitchen ?

I must be having one my dense moments (which make up about 90% of my existence). If you can reboot, what's hanging?

If you can get into your Vega, please go to Settings->About device and reply back with the kernel version and build number.

All buttons respond, but it just sits on the rebooting page.

I saw on another thread that once its in host, the kernel changes. Mine does not:

2.6.32.9_P10_V1.06.5_20101213_DIX_UK

Harmony 2.2 FRF91 20101206.154717

What do you exactly mean by rebooting page...

What does it look like?

Just trying to understand/figure out what's going wrong here...

Mine is doing the same, that's why I just popped back on here to see if I could shed some light on it.

No, but you need root for it to work...

Paul's MCR Add-Ons are rooted...

Steady at the helm number one.

Pauls add-ons are not rooted. Rooting applies to the operating system and refers, in simple terms, to the inbuilt user account that's logged on. Vegas are rooted out of the box.

Regarding this USB problem, would you guys please post steps you're taking. I'm still really confused. To switch modes, you need to boot. It it won't boot, how are you switching mode?

Thats my problem, I am not switching. From my home screen I click on the applications icon on the sidebar. I click on usb mode and select usb host. I then get a screen telling me it is switching usb mode, your device must be restarted please wait. It never restarts...

That's fixed it for me. I installed it & it asked for superuser permission (which it never done before).

simonta's widget is looking pretty good with it too. Great work lads, thanks.

Just a possibility but try going to SETTINGS > DEVELOPMENT > USB DEBUGGING and make sure it is TICKED then try again and let us know if it makes any difference

Did you install it from this thread?

http://android.modaco.com/content/advent-v...slave-switcher/

I get a parse error when clicking on the apk in ifilemanager...

Debugging was ticked, cycled the setting a few times but it hasnt helped... thanks for the suggestions so far though!

Don't know why yet but lots of folks have trouble with APKs downloaded on the Vega. Fix is to download it on the PC then install it.

Cheers

Yeah, I downloaded it on the PC, dropped it into Dropbox, ran it on my Vega & after it installed it asked for permission & away it went. Good luck with it.

Parse error means the download is probably corrupt...

Did you download it directly to your vega...

Never works for me...

Thanks, just done the same. Worked great, I also had the superuser request though...

Phew! Thanks all.

After a stock rom update, I have no root access without an app like visionary...

You are right the MCR add-ons are not rooted, but they are prepped with everything you need to get root access...

Superuser is the app to control which apps are granted root access...

If it doesn't allow the usb switcher to perform it's actions (flashing the boot image and rebooting) the switcher won't work...

The question is now: why won't superuser ask us if we want to grant the switcher root access?

Ah, the penny drops. When I first got my Advent, it was pre-rooted. One of the first things I did was the install Titanium Backup and other such things (before Paul's pack).

Since then, I have always flashed the Modaco stuff immediately after a ROM flash so I wouldn't have noticed. It seems that 1.04 is rooted, 1.06 is not; or alternatively, I've completely lost the plot.

There really isn't much mystery to rooting. It simply means that you log on as "root", equivalent of SU for Linux folks, administrator for Windows folks. THe magic comes on those devices which have bootloaders that marmalise ones' efforts to root. That where the ROM devs get to strut their stuff.

Cheers
