ROM edit to disable phone/wifi functionality??

OK, I know that might sound just a little mad (!!), but having been playing with my SF (first Android phone) and looking round some of the apps in the market, it struck me that it could be a great handheld device for schools. At £100 its the same price as a DS, but apps range from free to cheap and the (relative) ease of development means custom applications are achievable. However one thing you would want to do is build a custom ROM that strips away everything you dont need and also disables the phone functionality (and possibly wifi although there is value for some apps) to basically leave a portable gaming device.

Thoughts? Pointers in the right direction for where to start with this?

cheers

I dunno how much of the functionality you want to strip, but why dont you just turn on airplane mode? kills all the radios. you can still turn on the wifi (which you might want to keep for getting games of the market). plus, if you install a wifi widget you can turn it off and on as fast as you can move your fingers, while keeping phone in airplane mode, so gsm radio is inactive.

and get KK's ultra slim JJ rom as it is stripped down as much as possible and its fast and stable.

I imagine the Op wants something more permanent than airplane mode. Something little fingers cannot easily undo.

It should be quite possible to cook a ROM with a broken RIL that would do what you want. Some of the earlier releases were like this until they were fixed but I don't know of any that are like this now (except 2.3 and that's not a good solution for you for a whole manner of reasons).

Why not just use a PAYG SIM with no credit on it??

How about using the Gingerbread port. AFAIK IRL is not working. So there won't be any cellular connectivity.

Delete Phone.apk, Contacts.apk and ContactsProvider.apk from the rom ZIP before flashing. That will completely break the phone functionality. You might want to remove Mms.apk too as it'll be useless without the phone working.

A stable stripped down base ROM sounds like an excellent starting place and then taking fibblesan's suggestion for breaking the gsm comms. Had a quick Google (and search in the forum) for the ROM you suggest but couldn't (obviously) see it. Have you a link at all? I assume its a stock 2.1 ROM with as much as possible removed.
