Guest ZTE Posted January 10, 2011 Report Posted January 10, 2011 Hi folks, I've found this nice digital clock on the market which features a 'night' mode. This will stay on as long as the phone is charging. The question is, do you think this is a good idea or not? Will it burn my lovely OLED screen over time, even at the lowest brightness? Thanks for any advice. Cheers... :D
Guest Rotmann Posted January 10, 2011 Report Posted January 10, 2011 I think it's not a good ideea, for LCD it may be OK but for OLED I would be afraid because some people reported burn ins on OLED. If you like this kind of clocks, try alarm clock free from the market, it looks stunning on the OLED.

Cheers... :D OLED screens do have a finite life, but when I last checked you'd have to leave it on constantly for over 2 years before it reached its predicted lifespan - unless you're planning on using it 3 years from now it shouldn't be a problem. Not sure about the burn-in effect though - I've heard this can be an issue, but the San Fran is so new on the market there's not a lot of data to make any decisions.
Guest cobhc Posted January 10, 2011 Report Posted January 10, 2011 Rem1x said he had experienced burn in, however I've not seen anything myself, or heard anyone else mention this (as far as I recall).
Guest IronDoc Posted January 10, 2011 Report Posted January 10, 2011 Someone was talking about how some phones get burn in from having a white status bar. They cited it as a reason to use a dark theme on the blade. Dunno how accurate that is though.
Guest Arr Too Posted January 10, 2011 Report Posted January 10, 2011 Yeah, OLED do 'wear' and they do this more in the blue colour. They also use very little power to display black, so dark themes are good for several reasons.
Guest piperboy Posted January 10, 2011 Report Posted January 10, 2011 I do like the idea of that alarm clock / night light. BTW, where do you get themes from? (ie dark theme)
Guest Gryphonic Posted January 10, 2011 Report Posted January 10, 2011 I do like the idea of that alarm clock / night light. BTW, where do you get themes from? (ie dark theme) They're on this forum (with a [THEME] tag). Gingerbread theme is the most common dark one

So, as long as you stay away from blue and keep the background black, do you think it would be OK to leave on all night? Thanks for all the useful replies BTW. :D

Guest Rotmann Posted January 10, 2011 Report Posted January 10, 2011 Look for alarm clock free, it's way better than the one in the first post. LINK. Works in landscape too and looks sick.
Guest ZTE Posted January 10, 2011 Report Posted January 10, 2011 By what name should i search for this in the market ? I want to download it. Thanks! I think it's just called 'Digital Clock'. Try that. :D

In what way is it 'way better than the one in the first post'? For a start, you can't change the colour from bright green and it's smaller. Not only that, there are ads! :P I hate ads!! :D
Guest Arr Too Posted January 10, 2011 Report Posted January 10, 2011 So, as long as you stay away from blue and keep the background black, do you think it would be OK to leave on all night? I don't think I'd risk it unless I really wanted an alarm clock above everything else. One thing that might work more safely is if it gradually moved about the screen, and maybe alternated red and green (and occasionally blue), to even out the wear. But obviously the screen would last longer if it was off! :D And perhaps your concern for the screen depends a lot on when you might want to replace the Blade with a newer model anyway...
Guest UncleFista Posted January 10, 2011 Report Posted January 10, 2011 I prefer the stock clock on "night" mode myself. After over a month's nightly use there's no sign of burn-in on my OLED screen. It's very dark though, only visible in the pitch dark really :D
Guest Azurren Posted January 10, 2011 Report Posted January 10, 2011 Burn in.. There is a thread over @XDA where a ton of paranoid people are bragging about how much worse there burn-in is than the next guy. Seriously though my friends got a desire (AMOLED, got it when they first came out) That's been displaying the status bar for all it's life! Is there burn in? I donno actually because I didn't get a microscope out :D I am interested to see how the OLED blades last mind :P Don't be afraid of burn-in.. Do you treat your car the same way? Hey your typing! Repetitive strain injury! Seriously don't bubble wrap your phone B)
