Guest andrewg12345 Posted January 11, 2011 Report Posted January 11, 2011 (edited) Hi, I'm really struggling to connect my nas samba box (its a pluscom Firmware Version R3282-1.51c LOADER32 1.15 W1.17). I can connect from windows and ubuntu on a wired connection but noT via the vega, I have tried various file manager apps with the samba plugins with no luck. I'm getting confused between hostname, groupname, servername, sharename etc, (have tried various permutations) so I'm not sure what I need to do here. Also I read possible issues could be port settings on the router etc, again I'm lost for clear info on this. ANY help really appreciated - thanks in advaced! running stock r5 rom Edited January 11, 2011 by andrewg12345
Guest thedicemaster Posted January 11, 2011 Report Posted January 11, 2011 in most cases host name and group name can be kept empty. server name is the ip or name of your network drive share name can usually be kept empty too, unless you want to go directly to a specific folder on the network drive.
Guest andrewg12345 Posted January 11, 2011 Report Posted January 11, 2011 (edited) Hi, thanks. I tried ES file explorer, setup seems simple enough, I entered ip of the nas 192.168.1.3, username, password and get the following message login failure - wifi may be off, smb server out of network scope, invalid ip, blocked by firewall, smb service is off. Well i know i can connect via window/ubuntu (wired) so possibles are : 1.smb server out of network scope? what does this mean 2. blocked by firewall? how would i know, how would i fix it 3. incompatible samba versions - how do i know/test this ps - I did a server scan , but it only found 192.168.1.2, I assume my windows pc's shares, but I could not connect to those (i do not rember giving a password for these) Thanks Edited January 11, 2011 by andrewg12345
Guest English Haze Posted January 11, 2011 Report Posted January 11, 2011 The Vega doesn't have cifs support at the moment. The kernel sources are required to enable it and they haven't been released. You can't connect to cifs/Samba network shares from the Vega yet.

Hi thanks, I am looking to connect my vega to a nas, not use the vega as a shared source, but thats interesting to know, although i'm sure i read other people have connected to their nas boxes and windows shares, I did manage to connect via ftp, maybe thats how they did it. Hope this fix comes around soon. Let me know otherwise Edited January 11, 2011 by andrewg12345
Guest .stu Posted January 11, 2011 Report Posted January 11, 2011 I use astro with the smb add-on. Just scroll right on the top menu 'til you get to 'Network' then click 'New'. Select 'SMB' and put in the ip address of the computer whose shares you want to access in the 'Server' field and the name of the share in the 'Share' field - no need for username or password. There's a 'Test' button at the bottom so you can keep trying it 'til you get it right.

English Haze is wrong - you CAN connect to SMB shares quite easily using apps such as Astro and ES File Explorer - you just can't mount a samba share as part of the Vega's own file system (which would allow you to access their contents using any app that can browse the Vega's file system i.e. the inbuilt media player).

Hi, i have tried and i get an error dialog : "JCIFS:SMB.SMBEXCEPTION:NULL INPUT PARAMETER java.lang.nullpointerexception:null input param " so the jcifs plot thickens? - any clues
Guest English Haze Posted January 11, 2011 Report Posted January 11, 2011 (edited) I stand corrected. Yes, it's mounting the share that you can't do right now. I was trying to do this so I could play media directly from my network rather than just access it to copy it over. Sorry for the misinformation. Edited January 11, 2011 by English Haze
Guest phil-t Posted January 11, 2011 Report Posted January 11, 2011 Hi, i have tried and i get an error dialog : "JCIFS:SMB.SMBEXCEPTION:NULL INPUT PARAMETER java.lang.nullpointerexception:null input param " so the jcifs plot thickens? - any clues Astro with the SMB module also works really well for me.. I only fill in 4 fields, - The connection name (can't remember the exact name of the field, but it's just used for displaying in Astro) - The server name (I use it's hostname, not its IP, and that works for me) - user name - password. Have you tried connecting via SMB to a normal PC?
Guest andrewg12345 Posted January 11, 2011 Report Posted January 11, 2011 (edited) Have you tried connecting via SMB to a normal PC? Hi, yes tried es file explorer, the windows share worked (very fast too) but still no joy connecting via samba to the nas from the vega ftp connects to the nas in es but if i open an mp3, but closes after about 8-10 seconds - odd Tried Astro, connected to windows share but NOT nas, got server not found, and error JCIFS:SMB.SMBEXCEPTION:NULL INPUT PARAMETER etc Edited January 11, 2011 by andrewg12345
Guest unholyimp Posted January 11, 2011 Report Posted January 11, 2011 I also have a NAS and the easiest tool for Android has to be file expert as you can search for them and they set themselves up. Easy as that. All I can say is make sure if you load files to your SD card to get them to show up in the gallery you may find you need to unmount and remount the card to get them to show up as it will cause the system to do a prepare SD.

ANY help really appreciated - thanks in advaced! running stock r5 rom I have the same problem and it's not router or port issues - I suspect it's the implementation of samba/smb on the NAS. I have a fairly old Buffalo NAS and I can connect via FTP and SMB/Samba from WinXP, Win7 and two OSX PC's - but not the Vega. I can connect via FTP to the NAS from the Vega (and my Android smartphone). Mount info I use for MAC is "mount volume smb://username:[email protected]/music". On the PC's I use the normal "Map Network drive" wizard to connect. I have tried Astro with SMB plugin, es File Explorer and File Expert as suggested above - all will not connect. In catlog it shows "SmbException occurred:jcifs.smb.SmbAuthException: Logon Failure: unknown user name or password." But as I know the connections work fine from all other devices I do know the username and password is correct due to that. I have read some info about some NAS boxes only working with the older "mount volume" method - perhaps MAC's and PC's are backwards compatible but the app's/Android is not? Also found this: http://android.modaco.com/index.php?s=&...t&p=1239145 which would imply in our case (if my theory is right) that mounting the cifs/smb share is only possible with cifs module loaded in a custom kernel (as mentioned above also) Edited January 11, 2011 by sipart

So I'm not going mad! seems like it is a nas problem, have you tried upgrading the firmware on your nas, let us know how you get on. I can not find an upgradde for my nas, (this is it http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/3-5-NAS-Network-Atta...item48365c6577) and possibly as a result it also has other issues which I'm not happy about so I think I will return it if I can not resolve the issues.
Guest andrewg12345 Posted January 12, 2011 Report Posted January 12, 2011 (edited) I have also tried upnp (the nas has a media server (assuming upnp)) apps - could not connect or not event recognised. Edited January 12, 2011 by andrewg12345
Guest warriorscot Posted January 12, 2011 Report Posted January 12, 2011 Have you checked that wether its a specific problem with the NAS box or just Samba in general your vega has a problem with. If you create a Samba network on windows and try to connect the vega it should work fine if it doesn't you might have a bigger problem than just a compatibility issue. Have you looked for updates to your box it might be something that was corrected in a later update I think sipart is probably correct in that its the handling of the SMB network by the box that is the problem. FTP is an older and established technique compared to SMB which is probably why it works where samba doesn't. Is FTP an option on a pluscom box?

Mine has the latest official firmware (last one in 2005!) But it is hackable (http://buffalo.nas-central.org/wiki/Main_Page) I have an old ls2 model, but I can't muster the effort to do it. We a modded firmware it would probably be ok. Have you seen this? http://www.patriotmem.com/forums/archive/i...php/t-3056.html Edited January 12, 2011 by sipart
Guest andrewg12345 Posted January 12, 2011 Report Posted January 12, 2011 The finger is pointing to the nas, and the firmware.. ihave downloaded acouple of updates but they do not waant to load for some reason.
