We in the Advent Vega Accessory Team at Dixons are interested to get your feedback on what you'd be willing to pay for the Advent Vega dock. As it stands, the dock will charge the tablet and add an additional 3 usb connections as well as an hdmi connector. Bare in mind that the Samsung Galaxy Tab dock has an RRP of £69.99 and is a similar spec. I've assumed that no-one would pay more than this but correct me if I'm wrong.

Would the tablet switch from Host/Slave as the tablet was connected/disconnected or would the usb port on the tablet stay in slave mode (as I assume)? also would the bottom of the dock be rubberised? p.s you must have had to be really careful with the viewing angle... is this adjustable? p.p.s the samsung dock is a massive rip off at £70 (I havent heard it was ever this price??) VERY good point. Would LOVE it if this was the case!! (Or if Vegaaccs was able to advise of the reason / potential fix for this). Then again, I'd likely go for a keyboard / mouse combo when it's in the Stand, so shouldn't be effected by this issue.

I don't use my tablet much when its on charge though. As per the dock I wouldn't pay more than 30.00 for the equivelent of a 3 port USB 2 hub and more convenient charging. In my opinion we shouldnt have to pay through the nose for this, I see it as quite a serious manufacturing flaw as the device is pretty unusable for typing when plugged in. Guest carl rose Posted January 11, 2011 Report Posted January 11, 2011 I would buy it at £30. £70 for the samsung I would never buy it. It's more expensive than the ipad one! I tought apple was the money orientated one. The thing is, the dock looks very nice, I am sure in a few months we will see the compatible one advertised on ebay with half the price and the same or more functions like a remote control and a not soooooo bright blue light at the front. Not to mention adjustable (the one in the photo does not look so). I would still buy the original at £30 though, more than that I wouldn't. Just being honest.

Guest Bobbler Posted January 11, 2011 Report Posted January 11, 2011 About 30 would be maximum for a non essential item IMO. I am also not a great fan of a huge great blue led when you are trying to view a screen just above it. Fix the charger and add a adjustable viewing angle

Guest warriorscot Posted January 11, 2011 Report Posted January 11, 2011 (edited) £30 is about right considering its basically just a USB hub and molded plastic stand, it would be nice to charge it on but its not essential to using it IMO. I would maybe pay £40-45 if it had an additional DVI out and line in and out for 3.5mm jacks, ethernet and was fully adjustable so that you can orient it for viewing and typing. The Galaxy tab dock is a complete rip off, using that as a pricing guide would be a grave disservice to vega buyers just because Samsung are ripping people off doesn't mean you should too. And they are doing themselves a disservice as I would say a lot more people will buy a dock at £30 than they would at £60. Also keep in mind the Vega is a budget tablet people who bought it aren't necessarily going to be flush with cash otherwise we would have bought the Tab or an Ipad or held out longer for a tablet with the more powerful version of Tegra. And I agree with the others the P10AN01 devices will all use the same dock that I have seen from the pictures so it should be easy enough to get them elsewhere. Edited January 11, 2011 by warriorscot
Guest dukla2000 Posted January 11, 2011 Report Posted January 11, 2011 I guess am in a minority of 1 on this, but ... For £4.99 as a charging stand I may be tempted, but otherwise think it is futile. Once the Vega is in the stand it is unusable as the screen is at the wrong angle to type anything and is at a pretty hostile angle to touch anything. So for it to be usable while docked would need a USB keyboard & mouse. Well I already have a keyboard & mouse on my desk to a 'proper' PC and it seems pretty futile trying to get my Vega to substitute it! Sure as hell all the portable benefits of the Vega are dead if I need to carry a dock, keyboard & mouse around with me! {Similarly can't see the point of a case with keyboard - if I wanted to have a netbook or laptop I would have bought one, I am not stupid!} Then again the USB ports will be limited - see the thread about USB devices working in host mode. OK so this is an Android issue but, as above, I already have a PC with lots of USB ports that copes with all kinds of USB devices just fine already. The HDMI port - eye candy, there is already one on the side under the flap. Missing - a LAN connector may be useful if I could network the thing properly to share printers and transfer files. Still wouldn't buy one but may tempt someone else. Missing - an SDcard (or micro SDcard) slot - ditto. Pricing - pretty sure I have seen these for one of the Vega's siblings/cousins already (with LAN port). For sure would bet they will crop up on fleabay for less than £10 shipped from China/Hong Kong. OK appreciate DSG store model of retailing doesn't have to match fleabay pricing but still - there are iPad dock/chargers out there for £5.69. Then again the iPad is crippled compared to a Vega in its lack of peripheral/port support but that is another story. Would be marginally less vitriolic if it was a plug (into the Vega), cable and box with whatever bits precisely because I cannot see the point of standing a Vega (or any tablet) at that screen angle except when I want it to be a photo-frame, which in my case is never!

Now I have USB host enabled and have 3 stands dotted around the house (pc table, coffee table and night stand) I don't think I need a dock. However if the price was right (£20 ish) and it came with its own charger (plug) then I may re-consider. I think its taken too long to get here,a lot of us have found alternatives. If the dock had been on sale at the same time as the Vega, from the beginning, then I think it would have been much more popular.
Guest sipart Posted January 11, 2011 Report Posted January 11, 2011 The general comments seems to be that this is not an essential purpose but a nice to have and that its a block of plastic with some break out sockets - so I'm not sure why £30 seems reasonable - personally I'm an up to £20 voter. These types of accessories always have unrealistic and bloated pricing as it's easy profit. As others have commented the opportunities for ebay sellers and small Chinese outfits to knock out cheap working clones for a fraction of the price is common - assuming demand it there - but as the Advent Vega is a derivative of other global devices (Viewsonic 10s etc) then this plays to 'us the consumers' advantage. The glaring blue light is a turn off and an integrated IR port with bundled K/B touchpad would be nice (but obviously not in my preferred £20 bracket!). And I'll echo the comments about the screen sensitivity when on charge - personally I'm not sure why I haven't logged this as a fault with Advent (along with others) as it's particularly dodgy (I presume because when I charge it I don't really use it). But if it was in a dock and connected via HDMI - I might be more inclined to use while on charge to line up flash videos to output to the TV - and this would become more of an issue and a returned item. It is nice that Advent have taken the time to engage with consumers via this forum and Twitter though - well done - long may it continue and lets hope we all benefit from the two way communication

As it stands, officially, the USB port on the unit is for connecting to a PC for file transfers (& I never use it). The obvious choices would be a keyboard, mouse & external storage, or maybe a printer? I'd probably rarely use these things with a tablet as it means using it at a desk, so I'd have to factor this into the price. As mentioned by others, there will be cheap compatible versions on eBay soon enough with p10an01s turning up all over the place. I'll not rush out to buy one, but if I see one at a price that's low enough for me to pick up without thinking then I know I'll end up with one eventually somehow. That is unless Dixons release one at a price that I can't say no to. If they do that then they might sell more to other p10an01 owners too.

Guest gdwhitehouse Posted January 11, 2011 Report Posted January 11, 2011 I must admit, not a bad thing I guess, but unless I missed something along the way, the 'out of the box' Vega can't make use of three USBs, what are they there for? Does this mean there is new software coming down the line? For me, to have the dock on my desk with a keyboard and mouse (as somebody said, with no wires would be better) so that I can use the Vega as a temporary PC to enter stuff makes some sense. £30 at the *very* most for me - but in reality a look at the price of the case and the screen protector probably tells you loads about where this is probably heading. G
