Guest locky123 Posted January 11, 2011 Report Posted January 11, 2011 Recently keep getting phone storage low alert. Running MCR Froyo Alpha 3 for several weeks and downloaded a few games/widgets/apps. Enabled Move2SD and moved games to SD but still keep getting same message. Is this not the best solution or am I not carrying out the process correctly? Must I create a partititon on the SD card? Or will a newer ROM be better to use? I searched and thought Move2SD would help.
Guest locky123 Posted January 11, 2011 Report Posted January 11, 2011 Is there simple guide/instructions for understanding/using partitions/EXT2/EXT3/A2SD/A2SD+? I'm obviously a noob, but have searced, found various pieces of info, thought found answer with Move2SD, but without success.

I'm obviously a noob, but have searced, found various pieces of info, thought found answer with Move2SD, but without success. Just added this to Common Problems I want to use A2SD but what do I do Firstly you need a ROM that supports A2SD, next you need to know if it support EXT2/3/4 Now you need to change the way your SDCard is Partitioned. In Ubuntu use GParted - in Windows get the home version of Partition Wizard http://www.partitionwizard.com/download.html Now Copy EVERYTHING off the SD Card. Make the FIRST partition the FAT32 one (primary partition) - leave 512MB or more for the EXT2/3/4 (where apps will be installed) Now Make Another partition (must be the SECOND) as EXT2/3/4 - also make this primary. Now mount the Card and copy all your data back to the FAT32 Part - assuming it fits. When you install/next boot you ROM, the EXT2/3/4 partition will be mounted as DATA / this is where your apps go from now on.

Guest Afrodude Posted January 11, 2011 Report Posted January 11, 2011 (edited) Apps2FAT (built into Froyo) [This is what TB is hinting at]and A2SD (external program/script) are different things. Edited January 11, 2011 by Afrodude
Guest locky123 Posted January 11, 2011 Report Posted January 11, 2011 Thanks, think I'm getting there. Downloaded the partitionmanger, so to get this working properly do I need to create EXT2 partition when using MCR Alpha3 ROM as its a Froyo ROM? This is the confusing part as read following in the MCR Froyo ROM thread.....The Froyo method doesn't use an ext2 partition so you don't have to mess about with partitioning.
Guest locky123 Posted January 12, 2011 Report Posted January 12, 2011 I dont know how to free up the internal memory, which is now practically full. Followed the instructions in the guide and created Ext2 partition. Moved data back to SD card. But what should I do now to free up the internal memory? The Apps that could be moved by Move2SD are already on the SD card. Using MCR Alpha 3, Clockwork 2.5.0.9.
Guest bruschi Posted January 12, 2011 Report Posted January 12, 2011 bit of a noob question here too. on modaco 2.1 rom, and got a new 16GB card. I created a partition called EXT2 and left 1GB for it. formatted the card, put all the data back on the FAT32 partition, so the phone works fine, it recognises the SD card, but the apps still arent moved from the internal memory, and new downloads aare still eating up the inernal memory. do I need to activate the a2sd? or physically move the apps over or what? not overly technical with the phone, but just about getting by, but stumped now. any help gratefully accepted.
Guest locky123 Posted January 13, 2011 Report Posted January 13, 2011 I searched further to try and understand how to possibly reduce usage of the internal memory. If your using a Froyo ROM then some apps can be moved to the SD card by F-A2SD or Apps2Fat. I think either Titanium backup or Move2SD can be used to do this. I,m not sure of the exact folder location yet for these moved apps on the SD yet and whether by just moving the internal memory automatically reduces. Froyo A2SD (F-A2SD) When Froyo was released to Android community, one of its new features was the A2SD implementation. F-A2SD uses fat32 partition natively for application storage. This means, all you have to do is just slot in your SD card and its all ready to go. There is no need to partition the SD card whatsoever. This was a great effort from Google to include A2SD to the Android OS as it gives you an option to choose which applications you want to move to SD card, and which you want to leave on internal memory – BUT – with a condition! If the application developer decides to protect his application and not include A2SD support, you would not be able to move it to SD card. One major problem that F-A2SD has is that it only uses fat32 partition. This way, when the SD card is mounted to the computer, the applications become inaccessible. Not only that, if the applications have widget support, the widgets are removed too when the SD card is mounted. This can become rather a hassle especially if you have to mount your computer several times in a day. Some ROMs can use A2SD which means that a new partition, usually EXT2, needs to be created on the SD card, using Partition Wizard for Windows, not clockwork recovery. The max size is quoted to be about 1.5GB. I assume any new installed ROMs are stored in EXT2 partition, but these cannot be seen in Windows. How do you know which apps are installed in EXT2? A2SD The A2SD method is much more interesting. It harnesses the glory of ext partitions. This way, the applications (protected or non-protected), will all be installed on the SD card ext partition. The good thing about ext partition is that when you mount your SD card, the ext partition is NOT mounted together. This said, when your SD card is mounted, the applications will still be accessible and separated from the files and folders on your fat32 partition. On A2SD, the dalvik cache resides on the phone memory. I think that this must be a common problem and I'm not sure that there is simple guide to help noobs to resolve it. I dont think I have yet. I'm only a user and not a developer.

This was by far the SIMPLEST guide to partitioning your SDcard I have seen. Sure beats all that cmd line stuff. Thanks sooo much.

Your guide was simple and clear. Thank you for putting together your list, it's a real big help. I was trying to put A2SD into context with low intermal memory issues, then as I read more it got confusing as it appeared that there are 2 A2SD methods, one sending to FAT and the other to EXT partition. I was looking for a method to verify that they were both working.
Guest lilzad Posted January 13, 2011 Report Posted January 13, 2011 thnx for the tut only problem i have is that you can not format to ext 4 and only 1/2/3 how do i format to ext4? thnx
