Guest cartierv Posted January 12, 2011 Report Posted January 12, 2011 (edited) Is this a giff gaff thing or to do with the device ? I mean even in central London I can't get 3G !! Best was 'G'. What is going no here ? Is O2's network that poor ? Where I live currently it's G, E, 2G+, 3, 3G+ depending on where in the room you are. stock orange rom Edited January 12, 2011 by cartierv
Guest Lew247 Posted January 12, 2011 Report Posted January 12, 2011 You mean "poor signal" don't you? Please remember that not all visitors here are adults. O2's 3G network isn't the best in the world, it is in the process of being upgraded, but you can still get great speeds with their gsm network I actually have 3G turned off on my phone as it just drains the battery, and I'd rather have the battery last a lot longer than download an app a few mins longer than I can on 2g Apart from that I'd much rather have unlimited internet access and unlimited texts than be with another network who could drop their limits at any time take T-Mobile for instance who today announced they are only allowing 500MB now instead of unlimited. Also the signal on O2 (which as you know giffgaff uses) isn't phone related, it's network related so possibly best moaned about on the o2 forum? The more people who moan about it on the official O2 forums the more they'll take notice and upgrade the network faster

Guest Azurren Posted January 12, 2011 Report Posted January 12, 2011 (edited) Just be sure you have 3g or auto selected :P Because if you have it set on 2g only.. Heh Same reviver for both 2g and 3g in the phone, if you had a defective unit then you would notice the same on 2g :D T-Mobile dropped what to 500mb? I'm worried now :S Edited January 12, 2011 by Azurren
Guest tdodd Posted January 12, 2011 Report Posted January 12, 2011 I have the same experience and solution as Lew247. The 3G signal is very poor where I am so I force the phone to 2G mode only. Out and about I might well get 3G+ speeds, but I don't need them. 2G is good enough to download map data for satnav and speed is definitely not a prime concern when syncing emails, calendar etc..
Guest insurgente Posted January 12, 2011 Report Posted January 12, 2011 getting the bus from hackney to highbury in london, 3G is pretty terrible on giffgaff....which surprised me. but maybe it'll keep me off facebook think i'll do as the rest of you and switch to 2G giffgaff is cheaaaaaaaaap, but as I can't get it from most of my house I might have to switch....and now t-mobile are cutting their deals?! damn :D
Guest Posted January 12, 2011 Report Posted January 12, 2011 I'm lucky to get dial-up speed in north east scotland for 3g with o2 - unusable at times

I'm worried now :S Yeah T-Mobile have announced a ridiculous policy where they are reducing all fair uses to 500MB. No word on whether existing users are allowed to cancel contracts or what yet afaik. Fairly sure we have some legal standing to do so, but I haven't looked at terms of service or whatever yet (I, for example signed up with 3GB fair use). They seem to think that 'browsing' does not include playing games or watching video. O2 is not unlimited btw, Lew. Only GiffGaff and 3's one plan are I think. Edited January 12, 2011 by IronDoc
Guest rbbrslmn Posted January 12, 2011 Report Posted January 12, 2011 I was under the impression that later this week/earlier next week all the networks are switching some capacity over from 2G to 3G, and that for one reason or another o2 and vodafone will most benefit from this
Guest Lew247 Posted January 12, 2011 Report Posted January 12, 2011 O2 is not unlimited btw, Lew. Only GiffGaff and 3's one plan are I think. Only giffgaff now, I used to be on O2 for well over 10 yrs but recently switched to giffgaff, the coverage on 2G don't worry me as it's still O2's network so no change apart from lower costs :D
Guest wbaw Posted January 12, 2011 Report Posted January 12, 2011 (edited) I always have 3g or H here in Sheffield on Orange. O2 seem to have the worst 3G network. Edited January 12, 2011 by wbaw
Guest tdodd Posted January 12, 2011 Report Posted January 12, 2011 (edited) does this read that Giffgaff are also going to change No. At the moment we are benefitting from free internet (up to 100MB per day) just for having a SIM, and perhaps 10p of credit on it. That will continue through till 28th Feb. After that, if you want completely unlimited internet then you need to buy a Goodybag each month of £10 or more. If you don't want to start buying Goodybags from 1st March then you will be charged day by day for any data you use. Edited January 12, 2011 by tdodd

Guest HypnoPig Posted January 12, 2011 Report Posted January 12, 2011 (edited) GiffGaff is PAYG - it's it's really that terrible just spend your credit and try another provider. You can hardly complain about signal if you didn't look into it before you got the SIM. Edited January 12, 2011 by HypnoPig
Guest tdodd Posted January 12, 2011 Report Posted January 12, 2011 GiffGaff is PAYG - it's it's really that terrible just spend your credit and try another provider. That's easier said than done. I joined giffgaff in May last year, have spent a total of £20 in topping up and currently have a balance of £36. I have a further Payback of £40 sitting in my account to be applied in June, plus any further referral credit I generate between now and then. I'm not sure I shall ever run out of credit, even if I never spend another penny. :D O2's 3G cover might be iffy but it's hard to fault the VFM giffgaff offers. I'm a very happy customer. :P
Guest Posted January 12, 2011 Report Posted January 12, 2011 Then turn 3g off and just use gsm it will make your battery last longer as well as probably being faster Thanks have heard about this to save the battery but 2g on GSM only can only handle 1 service at a time so if you were surfing you couldn't get calls or texts is that right???

Nope, if you're surfing and a call comes in the data connection is 'put on hold'. As soon as you come off the phone it's restored.
