Which rom - everyday useage?

Hi all,

I bought my wife a Blade a couple of months ago and she's reasonably happy with it, although she has had some small issues, i.e getting a system force close message now and then, the phone has crashed a couple of times too. At the moment the phone is standard, all the Orange crud is still installed and it's not yet rooted.

I'm thinking of rooting and flashing the phone with a different rom, but which rom would you folks recommend for normal everyday usage? She sends a few texts, makes calls, plays a game or two now and then. Which rom is the most reliable?

Has anyone found a simple method to root the Blade? I've used Unrevoked on my Desire and that was a real doddle, anything similar for the Blade?

No need to root; just install Clockworkmod Recovery via fastboot and a rooted ROM.

Which ROM: read the topics on the Eclair ones, Froyo is still in alpha or beta-state, so not advised. With the Search you should be able to find specific information.

She he eh?

Try Universal Androot, it's a walk in the park.

Thanks, I have looked at the posts numerous times but have gone away more confused than when I started. :-) The Eclair statement is a big help, I'll look in that direction. Thanks.

What are you .... a school teacher? ;-) Amended (I'm tired).

Thanks for the info on Androot.

Also please not that the ZTE is not like the Desire - you don't need to root it first.

The ZTE Blade is far more open than HTC phones.

And that fact was key to me buying a ZTE phone.

I'd been trying to buy an HTC phone for over a year (I used to write operator software for HTC phones and know they are good) but their locked-down policy kept my money in my pocket.

I'm kind-of-glad because the open ZTE device costs less!

i think you should try getting a de-branded (remove all the junkware on the phone) 2.1 ROM. Stock one is okay but a few texts, calls and some internet browsing, you might wanna get a new ROM or Root the phone and get rid of the orange stuff manually.

Following stephen's guide is v. helpful if you don't know what you're doing.
