Guest Marvintheparanoidandroid Posted January 12, 2011 Report Posted January 12, 2011 Hi, I'm sure this has been answered before, but this forum is so big I struggle to find an answer. If a custom ROM you are using is updated by the creator to fix bugs or perhaps upgrade the Android OS, can you download and install these without wiping your phone? I've seen mention of 'update.zip' in a few places – perhaps this is what I'm talking about? I installed one of Paul's custom ROMs today and I would be loathe to go through the experience of wiping my phone a second time! Thanks all, mono.
Guest Azurren Posted January 12, 2011 Report Posted January 12, 2011 (edited) Yes and no.. You can getaway with some small bug fixes without wiping but any major changes (Kernal ect.) would require a wipe. So for example you could update from Pauls r3 to r4 without a wipe, but you would need to wide before updating to the JapJelly rom Edited January 12, 2011 by Azurren

Guest Nebbo Posted January 12, 2011 Report Posted January 12, 2011 I felt the same as the OP, so yesterday I thought I'd try going from Paul's R3 to the Jellyfish without restoring factory settings; I did however clear the data cache in clockworkmod. Only issues so far are that I needed need to reinstall twitter and swype stopped working which I was going to uninstall anyway. Maybe I've been lucky, maybe more issues will arise in time, but looking good so far?
Guest IronDoc Posted January 12, 2011 Report Posted January 12, 2011 Wiping /data and a factory reset are the same thing afaik. Kernels can often be updated without a wipe from what I've heard, it's other stuff being changed (most often the base ROM) that means you need to wipe. Just backup, then update and you can restore and wipe if it doesn't work.
Guest Marvintheparanoidandroid Posted January 12, 2011 Report Posted January 12, 2011 (edited) The only thing that's slightly annoying ATM is the ZTE lockscreen. I know Paul has already got versions with the stock lockscreen. If I were going from Alpha 3 as installed earlier today to Alpha 5, say, require a wipe? How do you know what requires a wipe and what can simply be updated? http://android.modaco.com/content/zte-blad...d-chinese-leak/ Annoyingly, it looks like Paul has literally just updated the prebake! Is there a link to good backup and restore tutorial? I think I made a mistake by using MyBackup rather than a Nandroid backup... Also, is it a bad idea to restore apps from a backup that was running on a different version of the kernel? Edited January 12, 2011 by Marvintheparanoidandroid
Guest That-Guy Posted January 12, 2011 Report Posted January 12, 2011 Yeah one of Seb's posts said you can update the Kernel without Wiping Data/Cache :D
