Guest WinterWonderland Posted January 12, 2011 Report Posted January 12, 2011 I ask this because I may just buy one that has already been done if it is not fairly quick. I don't mind putting in a day over the weekend but would it take longer than this in anyone's experience. I work in IT and have done a few older phones in my time. Just trying to gauge roughly if spending £160+ is worth it
Guest jurrasstoil Posted January 12, 2011 Report Posted January 12, 2011 (edited) followed the guide and would say between 1 and 2. seems complicated at first, but after you've done it you'll see how ridiculously easy it is. PS: if you work in IT, definitely 1. Edited January 12, 2011 by jurrasstoil
Guest Ciels Posted January 12, 2011 Report Posted January 12, 2011 Almost no time whatsoever if you use the guides around the forums and check stickies for sources. If anything it took me longer to find which ROM I'd prefer, but everyone seems to like 'Japanese Jellyfish' Took me 30 minutes to achieve the goal of getting home and de-branding without knowing anything.

PS: if you work in IT, definitely 1. May aswell get 2 phones for the price of one debranded one. Only other thing swinging me to the £160+ i've been looking at was the fact it has an AMOLED screen. Even that doesn't really seem to be that big a difference really. Food for thought.... Cheers mate.
Guest StevenHarperUK Posted January 12, 2011 Report Posted January 12, 2011 May I also add they are almost impossible to brick - just check that files you have downloaded are not damaged (the guide tells you how to do this)
Guest WinterWonderland Posted January 12, 2011 Report Posted January 12, 2011 May I also add they are almost impossible to brick - just check that files you have downloaded are not damaged (the guide tells you how to do this) Had a brief look through the sticky earlier which made me think hang on a minute maybe I should just buy two TFTs here and debrand both. Seems very well supported here also with lots of info so it really does now just boil down to the difference between the OLED vs TFT. From the videos and posts ive read it really does not seem to be that big a difference with pros and cons for both. Cheers guys

Could spare 30 mins during the week alright! Cheers for the reply mate
Guest andysee Posted January 12, 2011 Report Posted January 12, 2011 agree with all that. unlock, install clockwork mod, install a rom, undisturbed start to finish would be an hour, for me it was all the reading and and prep rather than the actual task. this forum is a fantastic resource I now have a choice of 3 roms on the SD card to play with, Modaco 2.1, and 2 2.2, Modaco and Flibl can back up phone and can switch roms easily. haven't managed to back up and reinstall apps yet, so not yet stayed on 2.2 just not found the time for that as haven't finished Angry Birds

Guest Tripov Posted January 12, 2011 Report Posted January 12, 2011 Compared to the old phones (i flashed my old SonyEricson K800 lots of times, and always fearing to get a nice brick after the process) it's just sooooooooooo easy! After installing clockworkrecovery you just need to copy one zip file to the sd card, then reboot with an easy combination of keys and still have a nice menu... :D
Guest shadowninty Posted January 12, 2011 Report Posted January 12, 2011 coming from a (Symbain) Nokia 5530 I'd put it at 0.5 if you work in IT
Guest StevenHarperUK Posted January 13, 2011 Report Posted January 13, 2011 coming from a (Symbain) Nokia 5530 I'd put it at 0.5 if you work in IT Good point compared to my TYTN II the blade was very simple. Modern stuff - just gets easier
Guest Matthew Ferguson Posted January 13, 2011 Report Posted January 13, 2011 Considering how much of a hissy fit my HTC Diamond would throw every time I flashed it, the blade is pretty easy. No wire between the PC and phone to accidentally unplug, and even if something goes wrong with the rom install, just boot into clockwork and try another. Simple :D
Guest rbbrslmn Posted January 13, 2011 Report Posted January 13, 2011 once you've got clockwork on the difficulty is surely in negative values, its close to effortless thanks to the good info around here.
Guest ballist1x Posted January 13, 2011 Report Posted January 13, 2011 I'd never 'done' a phone before OR used Android before i got my SF and have managed to flash it countless times now with no problems! The step by step guides here were so useful it was almost impossible to fail.
Guest acpcup Posted January 13, 2011 Report Posted January 13, 2011 Awesome forum. Great advice here and people
Guest MrPuddington Posted January 13, 2011 Report Posted January 13, 2011 I work in IT and have done a few older phones in my time. Just trying to gauge roughly if spending £160+ is worth it It is very easy - especially if you use Linux. On Windows you may get a driver problem, but even that can be sorted by locating the correct driver package. But I have to say that the appeal of this phone was the OLED screen (which is no longer being used) and the low price. Without these two points, it is much less interesting. It is a cheap phone with a number of issues, and that has to be taken into account. I really like it, but there is no way that I would spend more than 150 pounds on it.
Guest cbrpaul Posted January 13, 2011 Report Posted January 13, 2011 read the "how to" writes carefully , If you try and take too much in at once it can get confusing, there is alot of info on this site !! I work in IT and work with Linux systems runing virtual machines , even i found myself reading too much info all at once !!!! Once you are happy flashing roms, then move on to other stuff if you like, So my advice dont run before you can walk !! Oh and once you done a nandroid backup ( done via clockwork mod) if you do mess up your phone you can revert back to the nandriod backup anytime no problem and be back at square one again !! HAve fun
Guest triobot Posted January 13, 2011 Report Posted January 13, 2011 on a scale of 1-10 with what being most difficult? 10 or 1? its pretty easy to do if you follow this guide.
Guest Ricey155 Posted January 13, 2011 Report Posted January 13, 2011 spend some time reading and seaching and its a 1 and as said before once youv'e installed clockwork it can't get any easier, zip file to sc card enter clock and install reboot jd doesn't get any better (it even looks like a perminant iphone swop for me)
Guest Eszed Posted January 13, 2011 Report Posted January 13, 2011 Yeah, it's damn easy. So easy that you'll spend far, far more time than you ever expected trying out all the different ROMs. I've sunk a huge amount of time that I never would have if the process had been, say, 20% more difficult. So, you know, beware: the gravest danger is that you'll have much too much fun.
