Froyo 2.2 Hotspot - is it infrastructure mode or ad-hoc

Hi,

I'm currently running Paul's 2.1 Modaco Rom. Been having real problems trying to wireless tether my SanFran to my Advent vega, using Barnacle and Android Wifi Tether. I know understand that this is because Android devices will not connect to an Ad-hoc network which is what those apps create.

I believe there is a potential fix by pushing a supplicant file over to the Vega to enable it to support Ad hoc networks. But this doesn't support encryption - so not my favoured option. So, if the built-in Froyo hotspot uses infrastructure mode, that solves half the problem.

The other half of the problem is that I went back to 2.1 as my phone wouldn't connect to the internet when I installed Paul's Alpha 5 Froyo rom. I believe the possible reason for this is that the user agent was no longer Orange San Francisco and Orange didn't like that (using an Orange contract SIM rather than PAYG that came with the phone). Open to other suggestions? But I think I'm happy now in changing that in the Rom before I update it.

So, help please - Does the Froyo hotspot work in Infrastructure Mode?

And NB, if you've got the SanFran tethering with the Vega with encryption please let me know!

Yes, the Froyo-standard Wifi AP acts in Infrastructure Mode. As does Android Wifi Tether, (unless you set it to AD-Hoc, afaik).

If you're using 2.1, did you change to a kernel that supported netfilter? If you didn't, Wifi Tether won't play nicely.

Wifi tether wouldn't let me change to Infrastructure - prob. due to the kernel thing as you note. Changing kernel wasn't an option I'd considered. Sounds a bit too techy for me - I'll have a look round the forum re that option.

Thanks on both fronts.

The wifi tether that comes out-of-the-box with froyo is infrastructure

Barnacle is AD-HOC

My PsP connects to the froyo wifi tether just fine and that is a pig (doesn't support AD-HOC)

The default froyo wifi tether does not support AD-HOC.. If you really want it then use Barnacle
