Hi Guys and gals,

Just wanted to mention that after recently purchasing the Pogoplug to turn my external drives at home into a personal NAS/cloud system i have been more than impressed with the android software that accompanies it

I don't work for Pogoplug or anything I just thought I would share my thoughts on something that has made my Vega even more diserable!

Thanks as usual to Paul as well for freeing the beast! :D

Not bad really. The usual username/password setup and when sharing files/folders with friends and families you can give them only viewing rights or allow them full rights including download/upload of files. No different to the equally impressive Teamviewer software app for android allowing remote desktopping.

Its just really nice to be able to access my video backup/music catalogue (far too big for my Vega's memory card) and watch them back in bed/on the sofa/kitchen with no lag and at very good quality :D

Gmote does the same for any filetype you can open from the sd card - Share via bedroom PC, via wifi, and no need for extra hardware! :D

Very true and a very good app, but really like the PC based interface including adding the drives as physical drives in explorer and the iPhone app is good too. The only drawback for me is it offensively Pink. I mean really PINK! Which my wife tells me is the best feature :P

lol - yes, when i checked it out on Amazon there i was pretty shocked. Possibly why they're getting such a good price?

I'm certain it wasn't that colour when it was announced over in the USA!!??!!

When doing a search on amazon there is a nas to 4 usb port device for less money!. The pogoplug only has a usb device! There is also another device with 1 usb device down the list for £27. What does the pogoplug do that this devices cannot? Does it worth the £20 or more you pay?

It's all in the software.

Agreed... the interface is really simple and esy to follow. Also it has an auto setup mode for PS3/XBOX 360 as well as auto transcoding for videos which will then allow you to watch your stream videos for any browser. Great for catching up on those TV programmes when at work :D

Also supports a lot of Hubs for extended connections and you can buy a pogoplug branded (Yep thats pink too!) wireless dongle so you can hide it away in a cupboard.

The wireless one which is released later this year was showcased at CES recently and its black *phew*!

I have a Seagate dockstar which is essentially the same thing and run debian Linux on it. That allows me to mirror the drives in a raid array so I have instant backup for all my data tho it is a bit more fiddly to set up than the stock firmware.

I second this Dockstar plus Plugapps make the Pogoplug a bit too pink ! And the Dockstar is cheaper most places with the Pogoplug interface.

Hi, have just bought a pogoplug for £59 from PCWorld. Seems a good device but I have a question for the experts.

At the moment I need to be connected to the internet to see my hdd connected to the pogoplug, once connected however I can disconnect the internet and still see the drive as Im accessing it over my local wifi. Once the machine is shutdown however this connection is lost, is it possible to connect locally without the internet?

I have googled it and found some information suggesting I ssh [email protected] with ceadmin passsword. Sounds fun if I knew what any of that meant, (well I understand some of it). I have dabbled blindly with a program called Putty and also tried it in filezilla which I have used for ftp in the past. However I have had no joy. I have enabled SSH access in mypogoplug settings online, Ive tried turning off my firewall in case its blocking a port.

It would be really useful for me at work to bypass the internet and create my own small wifi lan.

Ive also seen some suggestions about samba, again I know nothing about but could look into it further.

Thanks.

You would need to replace the 192.168.0.x with the actual IP of the device on your network in putty you'd put root@<IP> in the connection box.

So for instance if your home network was 192.168.1.1 - 192.168.1.254 and your pogo plug was on 192.168.1.43 you'd put [email protected] in the putty connection box.

SSH = Secure shell it's a methord of creating an encrypted remote shell connection so you can enter commands into the device.

Samba is an opensource implementation if SMB/CIFS the system windows uses for network shares, it allows other operating systems such as linux to either connect to network shares on a windows machine OR/And to become a server and present network shares that will show up on a windows machine.

Personally I wouldn't suggest go around logging into SSH as root unless you know what you're doing as root is the SuperUser on a Unix based system and the system will often execute any valid command that entered (There are some exceptions were some programs refuse to run as root for secuirty reasons).

For instance if you were logged in as root and gave the system a command to erase every file on every connected disk it would go ahead and try to do it and it would for the most part succeed in doing so.

Also if SSH is enabled you will need to change that default password particularly if you plan to make it accessible from the internet, otherwise there is a high probability your device would end up getting hacked, and that's certainly not something we'd want to happen.

Thanks for the reply, I've found the correct ip number to use and changed my password. When I try to connect with putty it won't get to the next screen that asks for a password, it just says error connection timed out. I appreciate the warning about playing with root access but I'm not worried if I mess it up playing around as I bought it to learn a bit more, hdd has nothing important on it.

Do you think samba will do what I want?
