Guest mobile579 Posted January 13, 2011 Report Posted January 13, 2011 (edited) Is anyone using Theft Aware on their San Francisco/Blade? Does it work? Any other comments? Main Site: http://www.theftaware.com Review: http://www.androidpolice.com/2010/11/29/th...ands-on-review/ http://www.androidpit.com/en/android/tests...Aware-2-0-Trial Seems to be a good price at one off 10 euro's and does not appear to have any security problems like Wave Secure etc? Seems to be specially enhanced for rooted phones and does not appear to upload all your data to external servers. Are there any better options worth considering? TIA Edited January 13, 2011 by mobile579
Guest Eszed Posted January 13, 2011 Report Posted January 13, 2011 I just installed the trial, and it seems to be working great. I will buy the license when the trial runs out. I've used -- and liked -- Prey for ages on my computer, but I couldn't get it to work on my SF; everything worked fine when tested on the phone, but it wouldn't respond to the SMS trigger. I don't know if it was an app conflict or a ROM conflict or just what, but I uninstalled it and am trying out TheftAware. Try and see if Prey works for you; it's a good programme. TheftAware does look like the best of the bunch to me, though. I think $/€/£10 is a very decent price.

I agree it seems to be the best software for this purpose and it is a great price. Not sure if I should wait until I decide upon a ROM I am going to stick to before giving it a go however. I do not fancy having to reinstall TheftAware and setup all the options each time I swap or upgrade ROMs. Do you know if you install off the market trial version whether you need to pay via the website or whether you can pay via the market? TIA
Guest jurrasstoil Posted January 14, 2011 Report Posted January 14, 2011 What do you think about F-Secure Anti-Theft Mobile (free)?
Guest mobile579 Posted January 14, 2011 Report Posted January 14, 2011 What do you think about F-Secure Anti-Theft Mobile (free)? I guess it is a possibility but looking at the comments of Theft Aware several people have said they have tried the alternatives and Theft Aware seems to be the best. Has anyone tried the possibilities of FSecure, WaveSecure and Theft Aware and comment on which they think is the best?
Guest Wernerer Posted January 14, 2011 Report Posted January 14, 2011 Hi all! my company, ITAgents, makes Theft Aware. It works on the Blade. As it works on any android device. We never had complaints. of course we tried our competitors and - you can trust me - our product is really better. It already is and will gain even more features with the update we are producing right now (free update for existing customers - as usual)
Guest PeTiNgA Posted January 14, 2011 Report Posted January 14, 2011 I'm using WaveSecure, since it is one of the freebies you get with Modaco Plus and I can't say I'm totally satisfied.... sometimes when I try to check if wavesecure is working, well, it just fails. WaveSecure works by sending a sms with commands to lock/track/whatever, and sometimes I never receive that sms. Although, if I try to send wavesecure commands by sms using another phone, it works ok, so imo the problem is within wavesecure sms gateway :/ I may try Theft Aware soon to see if it is more reliable, at this moment I don't fully trust on wavesecure.
Guest shpal Posted January 14, 2011 Report Posted January 14, 2011 I have a lifetime free sub to Wavesecure - although rather annoyingly I have discovered it is not transferable to a new device. I really hate their website and have had a few problems. I looked at Theft Aware after your recommendation - MUCH nicer web site but the one off payment is not transferable. If you get a new phone you have to pay again - although I think it said there was a 30% discount. I guess a lot of people update their phones every year or so which makes it a bit expensive. Maybe they could think of doing an alternative one off payment that would give you 5 years of cover how ever many times you changed your phone.

Hi Wernerer, As long as you're here, is there any way to change the false name the app displays after you've gone through the setup? It's not a big issue, but I don't like the name I picked! Cheers for (what seems to be so far) the best app I hope I never have to use.
Guest ericssonfan2000 Posted January 14, 2011 Report Posted January 14, 2011 Try this one, works perfectly for me: 'How to Roll Your Own "Find My iPhone" for Android' http://lifehacker.com/5611003/build-a-find...one-for-android
Guest Rotmann Posted January 15, 2011 Report Posted January 15, 2011 (edited) I can confirm that Theft Aware is by far the best security app for android (although a little too expensive taking into account that you will have to buy again -30% when you buy a new phone). There was an offer on AndroidPIT for 4,99€, I think that was a good price. The thief can even make a factory reset or install a new ROM and won't get Theft Aware to be deleted. The only way to get Theft Aware out of the phone is ADB, this is the major advantage of Theft Aware over the competition. Sure you can hide the application. Edited January 15, 2011 by Rotmann
Guest Gryphonic Posted January 15, 2011 Report Posted January 15, 2011 I'll admit that i havnt really looked at theft aware, but prey works fine for me. Free and Open Source ;) And it does pick up the text prompts - gave me an alert within 30sec of texting it.
Guest Rotmann Posted January 15, 2011 Report Posted January 15, 2011 (edited) Just tested prey, seems OK but what if the thief/finder changes the SIM and he has no active internet or the phone does not have the APN of that provider? I did not find an option for the phone to send me the coordinates by SMS. Also if the thief does a factory reset bye bye prey. F-Secure seems interesting though, have to test it more and did not find a way to activate the SIM-change warning. Also I could uninstall prey and F-Secure without any problems, no protection, no icon hiding. Theft Aware is so more "theft aware" ;) than all the other comparable apps. Guest putbinoot Posted January 15, 2011 Report Posted January 15, 2011 I use this on my wildfire and it works a treat should work on SF. PhoneLocator Pro
Guest Pynto R Posted January 15, 2011 Report Posted January 15, 2011 I was watching this http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G30xX8OqnWc. Is it possible to set the "this phone is stollen or lost" in another language? It's useless in English.
Guest Rotmann Posted January 16, 2011 Report Posted January 16, 2011 (edited) Any comments on this one: http://www.spritesoftware.com/Great-for-Yo...minator/android Same issue as prey, did not see any SMS function, only works if the thief/finder has internet activated on the new sim. Also uninstalling works, no icon hiding/rename, no protection on flashing a new ROM or factory reset. I use this on my wildfire and it works a treat should work on SF. PhoneLocator Pro By a quick look at it, if GPS is not enabled it cannot enable it by itself. Also no icon hiding, no protection on factory reset or ROM flash. Unlike Theft Aware. We have to put ourselves in the shoes of the thief, if he is not too retarded the first thing he will do is change the SIM and factory reset. This is the point where all named security apps become useless. This is also where Theft Aware comes into play as you can't get this sucker off the phone so simple. Edited January 16, 2011 by Rotmann

I had the same problem last night when I tried out Prey. It works fine on the SF if you use the option in the app to broadcast that it's lost, but doesn't respond to the SMS at all. It's a shame because it looked like a great app. Will have to try Theft Aware.

I thought if the thief knew to hold down the volume button and flash a new ROM Theft Aware can't help with this situation? It is a pity Clockwork does not have password protection or a link to Theft Aware to avoid this? TIA
Guest Rotmann Posted January 16, 2011 Report Posted January 16, 2011 (root) TA installs itself into the system partition, even on phones with NAND protection, meaning it will not be affected by even full system wipes/resets. The only way to get TA off the phone is by deleting the app via adb, if you know exactly what you’re looking for (more on this later), or by flashing a new ROM. (root) I never thought I’d say this, but phones with locked NAND, like the EVO 4G, actually benefit from the read-only nature of their system partition – in this case, the only way to remove Theft Aware is by doing so from recovery via adb. (root) That’s right – TA can install itself using the update.zip method - the same method used by the OS to upgrade itself. The app generates and signs a custom update.zip package on the fly during installation or writing secure settings. Can you say "brilliant?" (root) Moreover, it detects and integrates with ROM Manager to make installation (i.e. flashing the update.zip) a snap. (root) The app is completely invisible not just in the app launcher (any app can do that already), but also in the app manager (Settings > Applications > Manage). (root) Moreover, if a thief starts Theft Aware and finds it in the "currently running apps" section of the app manager, he or she will not only fail to uninstall it (see above for why), but also won’t be able to delete any of its settings by pressing "Clear Data" – all settings are written to /system the same way as the app itself and are wipe-proof. Guest mobile579 Posted January 17, 2011 Report Posted January 17, 2011 Does anyone know if TheftAware will come up with a prompt saying it needs SuperUser access? Ever since moving to a 2.2 ROM (no problems with 2.1) this has the habit of hanging when asking for superuser privileges so if it does it will not be very reliable? TIA
Guest Imre Ansi Posted January 21, 2011 Report Posted January 21, 2011 PhoneLocator Pro has been updated, and now includes protection from uninstall. Also, if the GPS is off, it will acquire the phone position thru Wifi/network. I use the app since the beginning, and I highly recommend it. You registered only to tell us that, and you have a Desire HD? Sheesh, no comment  If the thief does a factory reset or installs a new ROM, your software is useless. :) @mobile579 - try to delete the SuperUser permissions and try again. I have seen often problems with SuperUser demanding apps just hanging on 2.2, likeTitaniumBackup.

Guest isambard Posted January 21, 2011 Report Posted January 21, 2011 (edited) password would just be an inconvenience. some one could just as easily replace clockwork with ADB or TPT. Edited January 21, 2011 by isambard
