Hey guys, first post ;)

I bought a San Fran yesterday, and i'm looking for some help. This is the first smart phone i've ever owned and at the minute it's all a bit confusing for me to understand with regards to rooting, roms etc etc., so can anyone help me and tell me what to do as simple as possible.

Firstly, I've read a lot of stuff about de-branding, custom roms etc. and I have no idea what they are and how to do them. So what are they and how do i go about doing them? What are the advantages of doing this, and if i mess up doing it what will happen to my phone? What is the best 'rom'?

If anyone can help me it would be great, thanks a lot :)

Read the sticky threads, most of it is quite well explained there.

If after that it still feels like everything is too complicated then perhaps messing with custom ROM's is not for you.

This thread by StevenHarperUk has lots of info, also Android glossary is a important to read when youre new at this.

Thanks mate.

Just a quick quesiton, what exactly is a custom rom and what does it do? What changes will it make to my phone?

putting a new rom on will get rid of all the orange crap, and enable hardware acceleration on your phone (angry birds runs smoother), as well as a few other things you may/may not be bothered about.

read this: http://www.chrislowthian.co.uk/how-to-unlo...francisco/1824/

get your unlock code here: http://www.nextgenserver.com/calculator/

pick a rom from the forum and use that. My wife's san fran is using paul's r4 eclair 2.1, and it improved things a lot. I'll be installing the jellyfish one when mine arrives in a couple days ;)

looking on youtube is a good place to get info on the differences between android 2.1 and 2.2. also read the stickies :)
