Guest C:S Posted January 14, 2011 Report Posted January 14, 2011 Hi, my Desire is finally rooted (by unrevoked), and I want to try some custom ROMs. I know there are many tutorials around here, but some of them seem to concern older versions, and I just want to make sure being on the right track. First of all, how can I do a full backup of my device? I know I have to use Titanium Backup or Nandroid, but I do not exactly know where the diffrences are, what they are and aren't able to do. Second, is that still the common way to get custom ROMs installed? I guess device's data will be lost then? Please appologize my low-level-questions, but I cannot find definite, satisfying answers for them. CS
Guest EddyOS Posted January 14, 2011 Report Posted January 14, 2011 Nandroid is a snapshot of the phone at the point of doing the backup. When you restore it it'll be exactly as it was. Titainum is used to backup apps/data and can then be restored once a new ROM is up and running (I never use it as I don't use many apps)

I've just discoverd Rom Manger's "rom backup" function, it reboots the device and does a lot of backup-stuff - is this the same like nandroid?
Guest EddyOS Posted January 14, 2011 Report Posted January 14, 2011 (edited) Don't use ROM Manager, you don't need it. When you rooted you flashed Clockwork Mod (CWM) (a custom Recovery) so to get into it turn the phone off and turn it on again whilst holding the volume down key. Once at the white screen, select 'recovery' and press power and it will boot into CWM. Then select backup/nandroid and choose your option. This is also the place where you flash new ROMs/Kernels/radios but I won't get into that - search for that Edited January 14, 2011 by EddyOS

When I do that backup, it uses the folder /sdcard/clockworkmod/backup/"date" and saves the files: boot.img, cache.img, data.img, nandroidmd5, recovery.img, system.img. is this the same as a NANDROID backup? i keep reading about NANDROID but can't understand. if not... how can I use NANDROID? txs
Guest EddyOS Posted January 14, 2011 Report Posted January 14, 2011 Yes it is, CWM doesn't call it nandroid but that's what its known as in the scene
