Skifta - streaming from server to android

just discovered this app which appears to do a really nice job of streaming from your home server to your Vega via dlna. I've only had a quick play but I've happily streamed an mp4 with 6 channel audio from my server and it played back really well. That's just using the ap and the server set up via windows media connect.

It doesn't transcode, and its in beta, and it does a whole bunch of other things I dont care about, but so far I'm really impressed. First few screens are portrait only, but it plays the video in landscape.

Nb so far doesn't seem to support avi though

Seems ideal for me, only thing annoying is like you say the portrait only mode.

Most, if not all my main film library I ripped to Itunes format over the years so not a problem for me playback wise so far.

Just installed this, and all I get is the first screen and an "updating Skifta" message, and that's it.

What am I doing wrong?

Not waiting long enough?

All that happened at that point for me was the updating Skifta message came up, then a percentage bar as it started to download something I guess.

Well, I waiting for a long time. However after a reboot it seems to be updating successfully now, and the percentage bar is now moving up.

i still think this app has a way to go - it *is* beta - but i think it shows promise. There is a feature request on the skifta site about allowing you to choose your own player which I'd like as the built in format support isn't great.

Does it support WMV?

Argh! Being able to watch video from my win7 computer was one of the main reasons I bought my dreambook. I installed SKifta, no probs, and it saw all my media library, including the video. But it won't play avi! Argh! I do NOT want to have to convert all my xvid to h264 or mp4 or whatever, if I'd wanted video incompatibility I'd have bought an Apple Ipad. Back to the drawing board I guess. I'll try Orb live, see how that goes.

I'm trying to do this but when I go into Windows Media Player as per the instructions, I can't find the 'Stream' button which in the tutorial is next to the 'Create Playlist' button. My version of Windows Media Player has neither button? Any ideas where I find it?

Is it because it's WMP version 11 which is the only version available for XP?

I use Tversity and it plays all my avi files, can't get my mkvs to play though.

What about WMV?

Can't say I've actually tried playing a WMV on my Vega yet, but assuming the Vega can actually play the format on it's own, then yes that should work.

I've got Gmote and that doesn't work, I can play a WMV that's saved on the device but not streamed from my PC.

Might still be worth trying UPnPlay, if the device can play the format then it should be able to be streamed.

Sweeet! I'll see if I can get it. Although my Dreambook isn't google market enabled... can be interesting getting a lot of apps.

And I tried Orb live, the video quality was abysmal, when it wasn't locked up. Skifta has a really nice interface, it'll be good to see how it develops. My daughter has an Ipod Touch (Yes, from Apple) and I'm running 'air video' server for it. Does a great job. I know my hardware is a level above the ipod... real pity that the software hasn't caught up.

Air Video Server is what I have too. I am going to need a new server soon the amount of these sort of processes I have to run to transcode, serve to different devices, etc

Will be all better once I move my phone to an Android device later in the year.

+1 for UPnPlay - a bit rough around the edges but not bad at all. A big plus is that you choose your player, unlike Skifta, which means if a vid doesn't work in Stock, you can choose Rockplayer etc.

Still going to keep an eye on Skifta though, as I think it'll be the nicest to use when out of Beta.

I get internal server error, access denied, presumably I need to change some settings on my PC but which and how?

I am also struggling to access my music on a networked PC. UPNPlay sees the server but when I select it then try and choose music from the list I get the following
