Guest trashbat Posted January 15, 2011 Report Posted January 15, 2011 Pretty new to android, I installed a gingerbread theme for my standard launcher and then also installed gingerbread launcher. To me there doesn't look to be any difference between the theme on my standard launcher and the gingerbread launcher itself (apart from a few cosmetic tweaks). Could anyone set me straight and tell me what the benefits of using the launcher are?

A theme changes various Icons and colours throughout the phones appearance, eg, colours of the notification bar and symbols using in then notification bar. A launcher only changes what is shown in the launch menu, (when you press home on your handset ) the launcher is the program used to display your shortcuts and widgets, as well as a link to showing all apps. The differences between the launchers are probably very minor, such as bug fixes, but may also run smoother, allow more setting/options and compatibility with backgrounds/live wallpapers, and may generally change the launchers appearance eg text color, size shadowing and wrapping. However a stock gingerbread launcher is unlikely to do many of the above, and an app such as launcher pro would, as well as other extras such as transition effect etc
