Apps - why do I have to keep purchasing for updates?

I am a relative new comer to Android, having this one device.

What I do not understand is if this "re-purchasing" of apps whenever they are updated is a normal thing you guys who have the platform for a while?

After buying Dungeon Defenders a couple of days ago, an update has since come out when I try to download it I get pointed to the purchase screen! I have the previous receipt in my Gmail account and thought maybe it's new levels or something. But today I now have Thumb Keyboard updates, again the purchase screen and thinking maybe it's not actually going to buy it I went ahead and got charged for a product just purchased days ago.

Is this normal or a result of the hacking of the market app to go on the Vega? Other apps seem to updating with no purchasing required.

Hi,

Would say that if its a big update then you could be charged, other than that they should be free, but I am no expert

Updating an already purchased app should never lead to a re-charge. The developer would have to release an entirely seperate version which you would have to install as a new app. Even a "big update" can't be made to re-charge you.

So short answer is, this is not normal.

What I would try is to clear the market cache and data and try again. If it asks for repurchase, don't do it and come back for more help.

What I don't know, and can't test, is what happens if you do repurchase, then uninstall within 15 minutes to get a refund. Will the version before the update still be installed? Or will it fully uninstall and expect you to purchase again?

Still no luck. I deleted the cache then the app settings.readers my account details, then removed and reinstalled the market app and the latest version of it. Still keeps taking me to a payment page for some apps. Namely dungeon defenders and thumb keyboard, others seem fine I updated others such as PDF viewer with no such issues. Its definitely linked to the same Gmail/Google account as I see my credit card details still in there.

just have no idea how to fix it and coming up blank searching Google to fixed etc

If one app is causing problems like dungeon defenders get in touch with them. Make sure you shouldn't have been charged from them and then get them to help you sort it out or point you in the right direction.

I'm new to Android & haven't seen that before. I updated Dungeon Defenders last week & it never mentioned payment.

Android has no way of double charging for the same app, if you pay for an app once that is it paid for regardless of future updates, if the dev wants more money from you they will have to re-release the app under a different name.

When you get an update for a purchased app it will often still say "purchase" but won't ask you to pay again, if its asking you to pay then there is a problem and for whatever reason google checkout has not recorded you paid the first time.

You haven't changed the google account you have associated with your Vega have you? If you have changed the gmail/googlemail account that you use in your device settings, then this would cause this behaviour as the purchase record will be linked with the gmail account that you had linked previously.

You could try going into the settings and removing and re-applying your gmail settings to make sure it is connected to the account correctly, this may fix the issue?

i have had things popping up when updating saying 'purchased'.. but i dont seem to get charged again. i think its just that it knows you have bought it and then updates it? i guess.. i never get the purchase option though - it just says purchased as i update it

Sorry but you are wrong or wrongly informed. Android obviously does have a way of charging you again, because it's happened several times to me already in the space of a week. One Gmail/Google account, one single payment card, simple as that.

It DOES ask you to pay again (payment screen prompt appears with the "what card selection" button) and it does get recorded by Google checkout as two different purchases. I have two distinct charges on my bank account, then plus £1 charge on top for each one as overseas transactions charges. So two 99c/1euro apps have cost me four times that. I assumed that the payment screen was just a way of confirming you have already paid for the application - by association of the card/account name, but obviously I know better now.

Gmail account transactions - the only account I have linked to my profile on market:

Not so worried about the money side of it, those apps worth every penny even at £4 a piece, but it's completely put me off purchasing from the store. It would be less of a problem if it wasn't I was only being charged over again for only selected applications which would say that there is nothing missing settings wise if one apps gets it but another doesn't no?

I just a minute ago got an update for Beautiful Widgets, which it noted I had already purchased so needed no extra details. It's odd and frankly annoying.

Yep, no response from either Google or both the app developers.

I just worry that due to the "not officially a supported device" element of the Vega that I am going to get little traction with it.

Just to say, Paul at beansoft has been in touch personally to apologise on Google's behalf and refunded my second purchase. So not only writing superb apps like thumb keyboard but also took time out his day to help resolve the issue.

Thank you!

Happy ending ;)

Good customer service is something you really appreciate in circumstances like this and companies that adopt this attitude get a good name for themselves. I was going to stick with my paid Smart Keyboard Pro having already invested some cash in a keyboard app, but seeing this I will send a few quid towards beansoft and try out Thumb Keyboard. Heard a lot of good things about them.

More oddness today, EzPDF seems to understand that I have already purchased it now, the updates the last day for it both went through without purchase, but Dungeon Defenders update still wants me to pay for it.

Very strange going on that it has changed for one app but not another.
