problems freeing up system storage (HTC Desire)

HTC DESIRE with modaco rom r9

after upgrade from r6 (all settings&apps kept) i had just 5mb of system ram left

right now (system&cache swipe in recovery) i have just 74MB left

i think that should be far more -

how to just blow the whole thing away and do a clean install of modaco rom r9?

whenever I swipe system&cache the r9 will still boot up and go through "first setup" of the phone

btw: I unselected most options from the kitchen (ZIP file has 151MB)

finally decided to go for app2sd+ as i have a 16gb class10 sdcard from kingston

i partioned my sd to an ext3 with 1024mb and flashed r9 image

funny thing is that i now happen to have 140mb of free system memory (75mb before app2sd+ image)

i am just wondering how to activate the ext3 partition

since then as well I have trouble with constantly loosing the USB connection with my sdcard - never had this before happening...

any ideas?

You don't. You're seeing an increase of internal memory? Then it works.

The loosing of connection with SD could be an app that's using the SD card. Did you move any apps to SD?

Do you loose connection when you plug it in with USB Debug only?

obviously a problem induced by my first attempt to partition the SD card with cyanogen recovery

now i did it with win7

minitool partition wizard

and now it works like a charm ;) (already saw the ext3 "used space" growing)

just one question more

obviously i unselelected my favorite SMS and keyboard tool in the kitchen - how can i reinstall those andoird/htc OS features easily?

should i just reinstall the ROM with those features added?
