Backing up apps before updating firmware

Did this a couple of months ago, but want to do again, and just wanted to check that I don't cock anything up.

So I back up the apps with Titanium (I've the free version - is that good enough?) to the SD card

Install latest Advent Vega firmware

Then when I want to bring back the apps, do I re-download Titanium, and then restore?

If anyone could confirm (or otherwise), I'd be grateful.

I've only updated ROMs a couple of times since I had the Vega and have never actually had to restore from my Titanium backups (I have the free one too) but I believe this backup is just precautionary as downloading a new ROM should not touch the apps you've already installed. I think you probably only need the back-up if you get the BSOD alas Bricked device and have to start from scratch again which touch wood I've not had yet.

Be good if someone else can confirm this though. ;)

A new ROM probably will need you to restore or reinstall all apps!

Only cwm ROM updates which require no full wipe (none available yet) and the MCR Add-On don't...

Hi Trevor.

I think you might be getting confused between ROMs and Paul's pack. Even though it's called a ROM (and MCR stands for Modaco custom ROM) it's not a ROM! It's an add-on pack for an already installed ROM. Clear as mud eh?

Flashing a ROM will totally wipe your device. Adding Paul's pack won't.

The reason Paul calls the pack a ROM is because one day, hopefully not too long, it will be a proper ROM. We just need the kernel source from Advent to be able to do that. Modaco normally release ROMs.

There are 2 chunks of memory in your Vega (experts, yeh, I know there's more but for the sake of simplicity and all that..). Your SDcard which is the external, removable memory and is broadly known as RAM. The ROM is a chip soldered into your machine and contains the bootloader, the kernel, the recovery program, the system image etc etc. It's this memory which flashing wipes and re-writes with images (copies) of the various segments. In general, your apps and settings are stored in system so wiping that blitzes the machine.

Incidentally, the ROM is a type of memory known as NAND. You might hear people talking about "nandroid" which is a program which backs up and restores your nand - i.e. the ROM. It's used in clockworkmod and others. Backing up your nand takes a complete image of your ROM and can be restored at any time to get your system back exactly. One of the reasons why clockworkmod is a big issue.

To recap, flashing the Advent Vega ROMs will absolutely wipe your device. Installing an Advent mcr will not.

Hope that helps a little (and doesn't add to the confusion!).

Cheers

That'll do it.

I've also found that the Vega's built in backup and restore is surprisingly good. Can't say I've noticed that it's missed anything in many, many flashes :-)

I swear by the vega's stock backup and restore function, its never let me down ..... installs all my apps and vega settings within minutes.

Thanks for clarifying that so well Simon you were right about the use of terminology adding to the confusion but I shall certainly understand things better now for your explanation. ;)
