Guest StevenHarperUK Posted January 18, 2011 Report Posted January 18, 2011 How to Install a Custom ROM on the ZTE Blade STOP currently this page is for ZTE-BLADE devices that have the old style memory layout [GEN1] blades. The [GEN2] Thread for installing ROMS is here : http://android.modaco.com/content/zte-blad...or-gen2-device/ This means that [GEN1] BLADES that use the baseband of 0x02A00000 and they can use anything on this page If your device has the new [GEN2] layout its baseband will be 0x02600000 - and you MUST NOT install anything from this page Currently Swedish Comviq phones and also Bulgarian phones (that are 2.2) MAY be GEN2 How to find out what BLADE you have (GEN1 or GEN2) You need tom install this app Ask Mr Pigfish https://market.android.com/details?id=com.apedroid.pigfish http://android.modaco.com/content/zte-blad...ask-mr-pigfish/ (RAR file attached to first post of above link - for devices that don't have the Market) When you run the APP the first line will be Mr.Pigfish says you have a Gen1 model or Mr.Pigfish says you have a Gen2 model If it's not Gen1 then STOP HERE! - INSTALLING A GEN1 ROM ON A GEN2 DEVICE WILL BRICK IT This guide replaces the Old Guide that only showed you how to install clockwork using Fastboot. This new Guide does not require you to have any drivers on your PC. There are two ways to install a ROMUsing ClockworkUsing the Total Phone Transfer System (TPT) Clockwork is a replacement for the Recovery tool that ships with the ZTE Blade. If you Boot up the device while holding down the VOLUME DOWN button, the phone boots into the recovery system. The ZTE one has no use to us - so we replace it with one that is very useful. The recovery partition also contains a Linux Kernel - this is loaded before clockwork. The Total Phone Transfer System, does not require you to have Clockwork installed - it does however make much more fundimental changes to your device. TPT is really for more experienced users - you can only install using the TPT method if the ROM has been specially packed for it. So there are 5 mini Guides here How to Install Clockwork using Recovery ManagerHow to Install a ROM using Clockwork via Recovery ManagerHow to Install a ROM using Clockwork ManuallyHow to Install a Total Phone TransferHow to Install Clockwork using Fastboot (old way) First - go and pick a ROM from the current selection Older ROM's can be installed with Clockwork 2.5.1.8 - you can install this if you want - but Clockwork 3.0.2.8 is more current. (this guide currently shows you how to install 3.0.2.8 - however to install 2.5.1.8 - just swap to the newer file - the instructions are the same) This Guide will select a ROM to show you the commands, but you can choose your own and substitute the name of your file. New users should follow the 1. How to Install Clockwork then follow 2. How to Install a ROM using Clockwork via Recovery Manager If you have just arrived here / or you want to understand some of these terms. Then you may want to cross reference with the Android Glossary Unlocking for ANY SIM You do not need to unlock your device to use any SIM, the SIM lock is separate to the ROM. You can generate an unlock code so the phone can be used with ANY SIM (see Free Version) The APN settings will need to be updated for your provider. This Guide will NOT work on ZTE Joe (Vodaphone 845) or the ZTE V9 or the ZTE Racer - You may BRICK your device if you try using the files mentioned in this post. 1. How to Install Clockwork using Recovery Manager Good News - there are 3 ways to get Clockwork onto your Recovery Partition. This is going to show you the easiest - however if you want to see the other ways - go and look in the Second Post (Scroll down a lot) Once you have installed Clockwork - you do not need to do it again to change to another ROM. The easiest way to get Clockwork onto your Recovery system is to use ZTE-Blade Recovery Manager. However you cannot run the ZTE-Blade Recovery Manager unless you have root (Superuser). First we install UniversalAndroot v1.6.1. (http://www.multiupload.com/GMMLSXFUIK) This is an application - you copy the APK to your phone over USB (or just download in on your phone) then open the file from an APP that lets you browse your SDcard. There is a Filer app already on your phone, or you can download other ones from the Market (Astro / Es File Explorer) Files downloaded on the phone go to /SDCard/Downloads So here are the Steps Warning : Androot may be detected by a Virus Checker as - Trojan:Unix/Rootkit This is a false positive - Androot is designed to break the security of Android - that's why it gets detected. Download to your Phones SD CardUniversalAndroot v1.6.1 (http://www.multiupload.com/GMMLSXFUIK)ZTE-Blade Recovery Manager 0.36b (check you get the right one - 0.36b)Clockwork 3.0.2.8 (recovery-clockwork-3.0.2.8-blade-gen1.img) - not the ZIP file direct link Check files are Good Install ASTRO File Manager from the Market Open Astro File Manager from the App Drawer - browse to the recovery-clockwork-3.0.2.8-blade-gen1.img file Hold your finger on the file and choose Details - check the the MD5 Sum is 39ce6be5ccea9081556acc3a4b422c48 - if not re-download the file. How to Install a ROM using Clockwork via Recovery Manager We are going to use ZTE-Blade Recovery Manage to tell Clockwork what to do. However in the future you can now enter Clockwork by:In the ZTE-Blade Recovery Manager App choose Reboot into ClockworkHold down the VOLUME DOWN button when booting up the phone ROM that support Clockwork - it will be a ZIP file at least 90MB. The device will go to a ClockworkMod Recovery menu screen. If you want to make a complete backup of your entire phone : use the clockwork option backup - this will put a FULL backup of your device onto the SDCard (in a directory called clockwork) [*]Use Volume Up / Down to move between options [*]Use Home key to select an option [*]Use Back key to go back Choose the 5th item "install zip fom sdcard" Choose the 2nd item "choose zip from sdcard" Choose the file "r12-update-modacocustomrom-blade-kitchen-unsigned.zip" Choose the various yes options When complete use the back button to get back to the main menu If you are moving to a new Custom ROM, or changing between 2.1 and 2.2 you Must reset the device (this will reset the phone losing your apps and data). [*]From the clockwork menu choose: wipe data/factory reset. Choose the 1st item "reboot now" The phone now reboots. 4. How to install a Total Phone Transfer This technique uses a much lower level method of updating your ROM. However it is NEW, and in development - and only a few ROMs are currently available (but they are newer ones). Using TPT allows you to change all of the sections of your phone in one single install. This means that the BOOT, RECOVERY and ROM all get installed together. TPT also has the power to change other much deeper parts of the device; the first discovery has been that you can change the partition sizes. This means the the Spare space (MB) in the system partition location - can be squeezed down so that you have more space to install Apps in the data partition. The ROM developer will pick the correct size partition for their ROM. Here is a video of TPT in action (thanks isambard) Compatibility Currently the Hungarian TPT has been confirmed to work on ZTE Blades from the following countries [*]Hungarian [*]Greek [*]UK - both TFT and OLED [*]French [*]Indian - Dell XCD35 [*]Austrian [*]Switzerland Please (if you are not a hardcore user) DO NOT TRY it on a device not confirmed Preparation YOU MUST NETWORK UNLOCK YOUR PHONE BEFORE INSTALLING Go here and get your phone unlocked first http://android.modaco.com/content/zte-blad...-and-zte-blade/ Be sure before you carry on ClockworkMod install method is much safer, more universal and more recoverable. If the device you have is not in the compatibility list then STOP. This update method - if applied to a device that's not supported - may BRICK IT (make the phone unrecoverable) MD5 Check your ZIP file before you carry on if you dont you have a good chance of damaging your device Applying a TPT [*]Mount your phone on USB or put the SDCard into a USB card reader. [*]Create a directory called image (lowercase) on the root of the SDcard (not in any other directories on the sdcard) [*]Extract the contents of the ZIP file to the image directory on your SD card (For example: If the drive letter of the SD card is "S:" then extract the content of the ZIP to S:\image) [*]Unmount the SDCard and turn the phone off, remove the battery, put the battery back in. [*]Switch on your phone by holding Menu + volume up + power (hold all three together) [*]Installation will automatically update your firmware, after it the phone restarts (When the updating process starts, you can release the keys) you may or may not see green text here - some users dont [*]After booting - remove or rename the image directory on your SDCard or you can accidently re-flash your phone 5. How to Install Clockwork using Fastboot On some newer phone you cannot get into fastboot. To try this turn the phone back on with 'volume up' held. If all you see is a big grey block with the letters ZTM in the middle, then you will have to use another method to get clockwork onto your device. On Windows you will need to install the ZTE Blade Drivers. If you do not install the drivers you will see "waiting for device" when using the fastboot-windows Drivers here : http://android.modaco.com/content/zte-blad...rivers-and-adb/ Some users report these drivers work when the first do not work : http://flibblesan.co.uk/android/zte_driver.zip The only tool you need is a md5sum checker. MD5sum is a way of checking that the file you have downloaded has not been corrupted in any way, when you run the MD5sum command against a files the response is the files "fingerprint", if this differs from the expected MD5, then you need to re-download the file Windows Get your md5sum utility from: http://www.md5summer.org/md5sum.zip (COMMAND LINE VERSION) Extract this Zip file contents and put them into your Fastboot directory on your PC (make one in c drive). Download fastboot (Mediafire Pro) fastboot.zip Extract fastboot on your Desktop (windows users do it on the root of C drive) Download 3.0.2.8: ClockworkMod Recovery Clockwork 3.0.2.8 (recovery-clockwork-3.0.2.8-blade-gen1.img) - not the ZIP file direct link Move the file recovery-clockwork-3.0.2.8-blade-gen1.img into the fastboot directory Open a Terminal (or a command window if you are in Windows) cd c:\fastboot Linux alternative command cd Desktop/fastboot md5sum recovery-clockwork-3.0.2.8-blade-gen1.img Check that the outputted MD5 is: 39ce6be5ccea9081556acc3a4b422c48 Turn off your phone and take out the battery. Unplug the phone from the PC / charger. Replace the battery and turn the phone back on with 'volume up' held. The device will stay at the 'green android' screen. Plug the phone into the PC. In the terminal /command window (still in the fastboot directory) fastboot-windows flash recovery recovery-clockwork-3.0.2.8-blade-gen1.img Linux alternative command sudo ./fastboot-linux flash recovery recovery-clockwork-3.0.2.8-blade-gen1.img MAC if you see the error : ERROR: could not get pipe properties rebooting... you should be able to ignore it - check you can get into clockwork (see step 2) all If you get "writing 'recovery'… FAILED (status read failed (Protocol error)) android" change the usb cable, and try another USB port. all If you keep getting waiting for device and you have tried installing drivers - then you could try the alternate Stage 1 (see below) which does not use fastboot When this finishes, in the terminal run fastboot-windows reboot Linux alternative command sudo ./fastboot-linux reboot) Wait for the phone to reboot You can now use the Volume Down button (when powering on the phone) to get to the ClockworkMod menu Thanks Thanks to everyone who helped with this guide - this is a fast moving community and we all do our best to add to it. Guest StevenHarperUK Posted January 18, 2011 Report Posted January 18, 2011 Ok Everyone? I know its a big change, but its time to move with the times. Any veterans who would like to follow my guide word for word and see if I made any mistakes please do so, likewise if anyone gets stuck - or thinks it could be clearer please please please post.

Reading through it, it sounds fine to me.... I know I mentioned a video (all the kids love videos these days).. but how about some screen shots ?
Guest Bigbyte.me Posted January 18, 2011 Report Posted January 18, 2011 Thanks for the New guide. It is much more simple and easy to follow with most recent additions. One suggestion though. Please include the link for USB drivers for ZTE blade. This will help new users picking up the best drivers. After all they need this driver to transfer files from their pc and/or installing recovery through fastboot.
Guest Phoenix Silver Posted January 18, 2011 Report Posted January 18, 2011 (edited) with tpt methode rename recovery-clockwork-blade-2.5.1.8.img to recovery.img and copy this file in /scdcard/image if something goes wrong you can always boot the phone with clockwork no need to press menu or home buttons ;) just power + volume up begin the process (tested many times) Edited January 18, 2011 by Phoenix Silver

Guest Monstrum Posted January 18, 2011 Report Posted January 18, 2011 When I do the following: # Hit the Recovery tab - Choose Install Recovery # Browse to the recovery-clockwork-blade-2.5.1.8.img and select it After I select Choose 'Install Recovery', I don't get the option to browse to it, it just seems to automatically pick it up from the sd card. At this point it then tries to install the recovery and seems to hang at the next dialog, I then have to cancel it and the recovery is not installed.

Also can you re-download and md5 checksum the img file.
Guest Monstrum Posted January 18, 2011 Report Posted January 18, 2011 (edited) Did you install ROOT? Also can you re-download and md5 checksum the img file. I did install UniversalAndroot-1.6.2-beta5.apk, when I ran ZTE-Blade Recovery Manager, it asked me for superuser access which I granted. I did check the img md5 checksum using astrofile manager and it was correct. How long typically does the img take to install? Just redownloaded everything, verified checksums all correct. Same thing stuck at Recovery Install Dialog ;) Edited January 18, 2011 by Monstrum

True, the PC driver issues is one of the big stumbling blocks people encounter, Steve seems to be aiming this guide as one you could do wholly on the phone itself. The problem might be actually be finding this page on the web, so I've been using the Google Chrome to Phone extension Chrome to Phone extension, you can send this page via that and it will (eventually) appear on your phone allowing you to continue reading it and downloading all the files you need for this, direct to the SD card.

Isn't just install clockwork, wipe data+factory reset, pick your rom from the sd card and flash. Why has it suddently become more complex. Is there still a link to the old tutorial ?

Guest aleckxander Posted January 18, 2011 Report Posted January 18, 2011 I KNOW i'm asking a lot, but as a non-native english speaker and a mediocre writer i think i'm going to say something that other may think. Do you think will ever be possible to have your youtube video subtitled? i mean i'm good at reading and understanding, but not really at "listen and repeat". Now since the Blade seems to be mainly a european and asiatic phenomenon (since no US version is avaliable at the moment) a lot of your audience may not understand the video. Well it's just a tip, your work is amazing, me, at first place, owe you a lot since if i could do something to my blade is thanks to your guides ;)
Guest Dave L Posted January 19, 2011 Report Posted January 19, 2011 Right I had a few drinks on saturday night and started messing round with the phone and deleting all sorts ;) basically I wrecked it.Now ive followed this and put a new ROM on the phone and its working like new.Im not up on computers (I drive a truck)but if I can do this, anyone can so thanks and if anyone needs help reversing a 40 foot trailer I'll return the favour :) Thanks again Dave

My display is a tft...maybe because the mod is preferable for Led display it wont look so good at Tft´s...
