Need help, really stuck and confused with rooting.

Hey everyone I am a first time android user, and im so confused about rooting my phone. I have been trying to root for 6 hours and can't understand what I'm doing wrong. I have been through many posts on Modaco looking at everything to do with drivers, USB, ROM's, fastboot, clockrecovery etc, etc.

All the posts have helped me, because I tried to root it but everytime I use fastboot it won't work all I get is this message:

"is not recognised as an internal or external command"

This is the screenshot I uploaded of the CMD:

http://img341.imageshack.us/i/fastbootproblem.png/

I have downloaded drivers, I think I have the right ones Im not too sure. I have winows 7 64bit. I know I downloaded the version for mine though.

There is also a problem with the modem on device manager.

Underneath it has this 'ZTE handset USB modem' with a warning next to it. I was told on a post I read to right click and update it with the driver I downloaded, which I did but it said I was up to date, and the problem still exists. This was when I had the phone conncted via USB when the phone was on.

When off is another story. When I go into android mode (volume up, power held) my laptop will give me a sound signal showing me it recognises the phone, but that's it, my phone isn't recognised any other way I can't seem to find it.

I am also using an 8gb memory card if that has anything to do with it.

But apart from that I am just stuck at this point, I have tried and I have been through many posts like I said before. Instead of me being lazy and just uploading this post without looking.

All I need is help to point me in the right direction and solutions to my problems please, so that I can finally root my phone.

All your help will be much appreciated.

;)

You can root using an APK APP -

http://android.modaco.com/content/zte-blad...-the-zte-blade/

See the 1st guide in there - watch the video

The whole installing of a ROM no longer needs any drivers.

Im new to this so will this root my phone so that I can put any ROM's on?

Also I wanted it to work with my PC since it doesn't work properly, sorry being picky here.

What you are trying to do there is flash the clockwork recovery mod, not root your phone ;)

(Clockwork is the first step to installing a custom (Pre rooted) rom)

Actually this is the hardest part of installing a custom rom :)

You don't even need to use fastboot. Just follow this guide: http://android.modaco.com/content/zte-blad...-the-zte-blade/

Ahh lol that could be a problem. But I was following this guide which told to put it into the CMD:

http://androidforums.com/san-francisco-all...custom-rom.html

I was also wondeing if taking the battery out when on android mode (volume up, power help) will do anything bad to my phone, because I have done it about 4-5 times because it was the only way to turn the phone off.

No damage ;)

Just follow the guide I quoted above (It's a long read but if you were to read all of it you would be an expert in flashing roms. I recommend reading the entire thing through first, then following it :))

Confidence is everything, although you can't really brick the blade. (Almost everything is recoverable..)

Fwiw, your syntax is wrong.

Either cd to that folder

cd C:\Users\Josh\Desktop\fastboot
then use
fast-windows flash recover clockwork.img

Or use

C:\Users\Josh\Desktop\fastboot\fast-windows flash recovery C:\Users\Josh\Desktop\fastboot\clockwork.img

Replacing clockwork.img with the name of your image.

edit: I believe your problem was probably watching a video or screenshot and mistaking the > you have for a \

Is it not as simple as you arent using the correct commandline ?

From the looks of the screenshot its horribly wrong syntax wise....you need to CD into the directory you have unzipped the fastboot files...you seem to be typing "desktop\fastboot>fast-windows....etc etc" from a c:\users\josh prompt line.

Unzip your files into c:\fastboot then when you start your command prompt, type

CD \fastboot

Alternatively, in file explorer or my computer, hold left shift down and right click your newly unzipped folder, and you will get an option to open a command prompt directly there (windows 7 does it, not sure about older)

then do your command line as per your guide....but starting at what you have typed in your screenshot as fast-windows ( on mine its fastboot-windows).

I didn't even notice he'd written fastboot>fast-windows...

Im very happy you all got back to me so quick with your answers. I think hopefully I can now root my phone. Im going to use StevenHarperUK's guide to rooting simply because I think it will be easier for me ;).

I know this already has posts, but still not sure what ROM to choose though. But I do want Froyo 2.2. Any suggestions.

Okay ill use the last one, because I think that's the one already linked onto your guide.

Is rooting this way the same thing if you were to do it through fastboot.

By the way can I use any ROM if I wanted to change with this.

Sorry about questions.

Also do I need to do this as a seperate thing or this already in your guide, I read it but not sure if it included this:

Installation is recommended via ClockworkMod recovery, ENSURE YOU HAVE A NANDROID BACKUP BEFORE FLASHING! You must also almost certainly wipe before installation.

This is for Paul's Froyo ROM.

I have followed your guide but all it does now is flash www.modaco.com on boot screen every 10 seconds. What should I do?

Hey In have everything sorted now and it works fine. It's great now with all the orange stuff gone and very happy. Your guide was very straight forward and easy to follow ;)

Thankyou for your help, and everyone else to. I now know quite a lot about Android suprisingly after reading about 10 hours on the forum :)

I'm an Android newbie too, and when I first started reading about how to root, it was intimidating complicated stuff about writing things with command lines. I wouldn't dare try something like that, it's way over my head. Then after dismissing the whole idea, I finally read something about Universal Androot... and it was very easy that way! No USB stuff, no command line stuff. Easy. So I got rid of most of the Orange rubbish with Titanium Backup.

But ROMs are the next scary step. I don't know. Even though StevenHarperUK's 18th-Jan guide is very friendly at explaining Clockwork and stuff, the actual ROM threads on this forum are still complicated as hell. For example, Steven points to the MoDaCo Custom Froyo ROM as a good general one to try. But the thread for this ROM says:

"ENSURE YOU HAVE A NANDROID BACKUP BEFORE FLASHING! You must also almost certainly wipe before installation."

I don't know what this means. Nobody has explained what nandroid is. "Wiping" sounds very scary, and how is it done? Also, what are "prebake" and "kitchen"? I'm also confused about some kind of "Kitchen" list on the page, which suggests that certain apps and features have to be ordered if you are a premium member of this site. Am I misunderstanding? If I download this ROM as a basic average person, will it contain everything? Or do you have to order bits as a premium member?

If I've missed a very user-friendly newbie guide to installing a specific ROM (preferably the best and most stable one that's most like Android 2.2), please point me towards it.

I'm not trying to boast; but within 30 minutes of opening the box i had repartitioned, a custom recovery installed, a rooted Froyo ROM, and OC + HW UI accell

my point is; if you read everything before trying, find the best option for you (Japanese Jellyfish Image install for me) and plough on you'll be grand ;)

Yeah I was really confused about the Nandroid, wipe and kitchen as well. But did a bit of research and everyhting that's custom on a ROM is made within the kitchen, which is why people mention pre bake and baked as though it was a cake lol :), which is why I got confused.

The Nandroid and wiping psrt is so easy once you know. If you follow that guide it will tell you to put recovery manager on so that when you switch on your phone with the volume held down you can access various options such as wiping the data and the cache as you mentioned, and then do a full backup of the phone which is called the Nandroid.

So it's fair simple once you know ;)
