Sending text message oddness

Hi,

Just got a San Francisco, my first Android phone, and I'm still too much of a newbie to install other ROMs, so I'm still on the basic Android 2.1 from Orange. But I did uninstall most of Orange's apps through rooting/Titanium backup. I also unlocked the phone with a different sim, but then put the Orange sim back in for now (may as well use the £20 topup I had to buy!). So that's the background.

Just a small thing, really:

If I try to send a new text to someone by using the Messages application, choosing "New message", and choosing a recipient from the list, it always fails to send the text. An error notification says that it failed. However, I can send outgoing texts if I'm replying to a received text, or if I begin the whole process by browsing the Contacts application and choosing to text someone from there.

What's up with that? Is this broken for anyone else, and what might be a fix? I don't think I like the look or operation of the text messages application. Is there a good alternative on the marketplace for free?

I have the exact same problem with mine. not sure how common it is because I think this is the first post i've seen about it.

Have not found a solution either but maybe Handcent sms app might sort it out?. I did download it but I didnt like it so deleted after a few texts so I didnt get a chance to check out if it sorted the problem.

Ditto. I use Go SMS and has only happened a few times. Sometime I have no signal though which can't help!

I had a problem where it would not send a text if there was a + at the start of the number. I use my SF abroad and it would not send texts to contacts whose number is stored with a + (for example +44 for UK numbers). I can call the number no problem. So I replaced the + with a 00 and it send the text no problem. My previous phone send texts OK to + prefix numbers, so it was not a network problem.
