Everything including advice is so complex

it took me ages to sort out my phone simply because people are vague in their instructions (with the exception of Mr Harper) or they assume you are a qualified mobile communications engineer or write Java for a living. The worst thing as a noob (not just on forums but in life in general is asking for help and someone either saying "doh that questions been asked a hundred times just spend hours trawling through this site for the answer" when they could just post a link to it. I am (naturally) not displaying my callers name since installing my new rom I have spent hours searching for instructions without success I have searched topics and posts and threads but the only 1 I found was completely incoherent to me stating adb push data etc.... I'm assuming you need some software on the pc (sqlite but there's several versions) and the instructions are quite short. I have downloaded contactsprovider.apk and copied it onto my sd card now I just need precise instructions how to amend the contact id problem.

Perhaps there could be a NOOB section on the site with very clear idiot proof instructions I'm sure it would stop the "I did what you said but this happened....." problems

When learning this stuff google is your friend, use it recursively. If you find a post about "adb push data" and don't know what it means stick it into google. If you find anything on that page that doesn't make sense then do it again. Unfortunately this process isn't fast - it takes time and effort.

If people just tell you what to do each time and you do it blindly without understanding then you'll be no better off when you run into trouble again. If you spend the time researching and understanding what your doing and how it affects the bigger picture then you'll likely understand what to do next time (or at least know where to start looking).

You have to use the "search" function and only if you don't find an answer you can ask. Just answering and giving the links to n00bs without pointing them to search would mean supporting their laziness and pointing them to open a new topic for every simple question. The forum is very fragmented because of lazy people who do not use the search, that's why people are so unfriendly when it comes to scenarios like that.

The guides that are pinned are pretty understandable for the average Joe, if this average Joe WANTS to understand and struggle a little.

 How brilliant is that?

As someone new to rooting and flashing ROMs I spent the first night sitting up to 1:30 but still with the fecking Orange Stock ROM on my SF. The next night I did succeed but it took a couple of hours. Then I progressed to FroYo and got quicker. On Tuesday I flashed Paul’s latest r11 FroYo and had everything back in about 30 minutes. You just need to read and digest the stuff that is out there. Don’t start bleating just because you have hit a problem. We are so lucky to have this forum and the developers but do not expect to be spoon fed. Either stick with the stock ROM or get an iPhone if you don’t feel capable of following things through. Remember this is not an installation of purchased software this is hacking an OS with ‘dodgy’ (in the best possible way of course) leaked Chinese ROMs. It aint gonna be easy.

There's also a link to adb stuff in the glossary. First entry in fact.
