Guest Madtomato Posted January 21, 2011 Report Posted January 21, 2011 Hello everyone, as an ex-iphone junky I have seen the light and have recently bought myself an HTC desire! Hurray! Problem is I have know clue what all the android jargon is or what they can really do... I used to jailbreak my iphone so I do have some knowledge about mobiles, just not android. I got the phone off ebay and the seller said it "is running the latest Froyo 2.2 rom with root access and apps2sd installed and the memory card is already configured to work with it." And "This Desire has got the latest MoDaCo rom installed with apps2sd+" I have no clue what this all means... I thought that Froyo wasnt avaliable on the desire yet? Can someone please translate this into terms I could understand, and also link me (or teach me) the basics of android? MUCH appreciated!
Guest Asselberghs Posted January 21, 2011 Report Posted January 21, 2011 Welcome Madtomato:) I´d be happy to help and translate the Jargon for you:) Your desire is running Android 2.2 or 2.2.1 Froyo, as of right now that isen´t super impressive as 2.2 is officially out for Desire but at the selling point it might have been good. That said it´s a good fast stable version and 2.3 is just out for the Nexus S, not even the Nexus One yet meaning it´s gonna be a bit before Costum roms gets 2.3 as standard. In general Costum roms moves ahead with more stability more features (A2SD+) and newer Android versions faster than the official roms from for instance HTC. Having root access means most of your phone has been unlocked, if your a windows user you can compare this to, a standard Android phone that hasen´t been touched has user rights, a rooted android phone has administrator rights. And so you can do more with your phone, for instance take backup with Titanium Backup. You will find that some apps. Like Titanium requires Root access to work it needs to do more with the phone that can be done by standard users/roms. Apps2SD means that aside from the approximately 500 mb of internal storage for applications/programs your phone has been configured to use a portion of your SD card to install applications. Your phone thinks that part of the SD card is internal memory and threat it as such, allowing for more apps on your phone. Does it say anything about the size of the partition? What is configured is the portion of the SD Card has been formatted with a special fileformat. Normally your SD card has only Fat32 a windows filesystem. (a layer on a harddrive or memory card that makes it operational) but to use A2SD+ or A2SD it has to have a ext3 (linux filesystem) as well before the Fat32 because in essense Android is some kind of linux modified for cellphones, or rather it might be more correct to say it´s based on linux. This linux filesystem ext3 partition of your SD card as just as operational and good as the internal memory and A2SD+ or A2SD makes the phone think it´s got more internal memory in the phone than it actually does. Thus more space for apps. So no need to worry about it. The MoDaCo roms or MCR (MoDaCo Costum Rom) is the primary rom on this forum created by Paul O´ Brien the admin of this forum. He´s very good at what he does, it´s a very good, stable and fast rom.And updates are in my opinion fast and regular, especially considered how many phones Paul makes costum releases of and roots. I owe this forum a lot, Through here I´ve learned to root, install costum roms, unlock my phone entirely by giving it S-OFF. If you take a look at how many phones are here as subforums it´s insane and many of them is rooted because of Paul and costum roms are released for them as well because of Paul. To Paul: You rock man:) but I guess you already know that:) I hope this helped a little. About teaching you the "basic of android" might be a bit difficult because you can do ALOT with it. feel free to PM me and I´ll answer any question you have if I can, but I guess I can. Otherwise just make a topic and ask that´s what I did, and now I live and breathe Android heh and can do alot with it. Kind Regards Asselberghs
Guest EddyOS Posted January 21, 2011 Report Posted January 21, 2011 (edited) Did you buy it second hand? If not, it shouldn't be rooted/running the decent A2SD Go to Settings>About phone>Software information and post the 'Software version' - we can go from there EDIT: OK, got off eBay so probably already rooted Edited January 21, 2011 by EddyOS
