Guest anthscorner Posted January 22, 2011 Report Posted January 22, 2011 (edited) Hi all, All of your on twitter and who follow #streakdroid #mystreak #dellstreak will have see the open letter to dell update created by @dont_panic This letter raises a real need for Dell to release further code to developers of Streakdroid such as DJ Steve and Fards to name but 2. I believe there was a 'limited' response from Dell on the initial flurry of tweets but nothing concrete to give an answer. If you love the development done to date, v1.6.1 is so smooth, just imagine (if you dare) what could be accomplished with the missing code? I sent the tweet below in "" to @techmeme to monitor the #hashtag in a hope it will raise the letter to larger communities. "Pls rt week5 #OpenLettertoDell http://bit.ly/hmcEPt @MichaelDell @Lionelatdell #streakdroid #dellstreak #mystreak" My request is simply, tweet the message, keep up the re-tweets, keep up the pressure and keep supporting streakdroid. Thanks, Anthony. Edited February 16, 2011 by anthscorner

Guest anthscorner Posted January 23, 2011 Report Posted January 23, 2011 Got mine up Thanks very much. Had a response from a man at Dell. Apparently they do not own the license for this code, it's owned by Apache2. They are in discussions with them but cannot commit to a yes, it will take time. It's nice to know something has started but we shouldn't sit and wait. So everyone reading this, keep on tweeting the msg as above. Ta. Anthony.
Guest Edrill Posted January 23, 2011 Report Posted January 23, 2011 Done!! Here's hoping for some quick progress on Dell's part!
Guest somebody9 Posted January 24, 2011 Report Posted January 24, 2011 Bump. More people need to see this.

Guest anthscorner Posted January 26, 2011 Report Posted January 26, 2011 (edited) So we've had an 'official' response from dell's forum (http://en.community.dell.com/support-forums/mobile-devices/f/3824/p/19362085/19815471.aspx#19815471) "Posted by Lionel Menchaca replied on 25 Jan 2011 5:01 PM Regarding the open letter requesting access to specific files, members of our development team have said we cannot provide access. We do not own the files in question. As such, it's not our call to grant access to the community. " This answer to me is totally unacceptable and shows little respect for the developers or users of the streak. To say I'm not happy is an understatement and I've had a chance to sleep on it !!! I'm going to do some digging because I'm struggling to let it go. Any helpful suggestions welcome. Many thanks, Anthony. Edited January 26, 2011 by anthscorner
Guest degriz Posted January 26, 2011 Report Posted January 26, 2011 If Dell dont own them who does? Who we gotta hassle now?

Guest anthscorner Posted January 26, 2011 Report Posted January 26, 2011 (edited) After some quick digging; GPL - Google use this to ensure all base code is equal and cannot be re-coded into proprietary libs, this is to ensure it stays open. ASL(Apachev2 license) - Development of proprietary code to compliment the base code and used by handset manufacturer to bespoke their android version. The codes is permissive licensed and does not need to shared. So ASL is meant to enable competitive advantage between manufacturers otherwise they would all 'feel' the same. So I'm guessing Dell have 'outsourced' certain code and used ASL to protect the "unique" features / functions. I find this principle very ironic, given the fact the Streakdroid ROM out performs the stock version is every way without access to the ASL lib code. Edited January 26, 2011 by anthscorner
Guest gilrad Posted January 26, 2011 Report Posted January 26, 2011 Well that settles it, I'm not going to Dell for the next gen tablet if they're going to be built in a way that hampers rom development.
Guest jsm7483 Posted January 27, 2011 Report Posted January 27, 2011 Put this in the pipe and smoke it Dell... Next time will not be buying a Dell. Definitely like this one and thank god for Stephen. Can we reverse the libs and just put them out for use? Just a question. I know cooyright might be an issue but maybe anonymous. My.tweet @Lionelatdell Boo Lack of Developer Support. Next time no Dell. Nice device -- Support needs work. #streakdroid #dellstreak #mystreak
Guest Truenash Posted January 27, 2011 Report Posted January 27, 2011 Tweeted. @Lionelatdell ASL license hampering development of custom roms, crippling our device for the future is not cool. Not why people buy android.

Guest Diomed Posted January 28, 2011 Report Posted January 28, 2011 Why does this go to Lionel? I thought he was a PR guy. Why not send it to the top guy? @MichaelDell Tweeted. @Lionelatdell ASL license hampering development of custom roms, crippling our device for the future is not cool. Not why people buy android.

Guest anthscorner Posted February 9, 2011 Report Posted February 9, 2011 (edited) Quick question people, if you don't want to face something and people keep on asking you about it, how do feel? Or how do you feel when they stop asking? Take one minute, think about; How much your streak has cost you (is costing you)? How much money the manufacturers and network providers are making? Then think about this; How much unpaid time the likes of DJ Steve are putting into Streakdroid!? How much unpaid time the testers spend trying out the builds and feeding back?! And then answer me this, what are YOU going to do about it? If this post hits a note; tweet, email or Facebook Michael Dell and his social media people, make a noise and make the difference. Thanks for reading. Anthony. Edited February 9, 2011 by anthscorner
