Unlocked before activating - I think!

I unlocked my San Fran but can't remember if I did it before acivating the SIM or not. I can phone on it, I registered it and got texts from Orange saying thanks for registering, you have £10 free credit etc.

It says on the box that all you have to do to activate the SIM is put it in and turn it on and you will get a welcome text. I never got that text! It seems that I cannot send texts (get an error) and I can't see a 3g symbol like I can when I put my Three SIM in...

Anyone have any ideas? Thanks...
