Guest stevew69 Posted January 23, 2011 Report Posted January 23, 2011 (edited) Hi all I've just bought my San Francisco phone and it's my first experience with Android technology. Great little phone but I am try to update to 2.2 to benefit from performance increase and the ability to run apps from SD card. Up to now I've installed Universalandroot and rooted the phone. I've also installed Astro and Recovery Manager. I've not used Fastboot to do this .... transfered on to PC via USB as the phone is working fine as a mass storage (when it finds it!) The problem is .... 1) when I download the 2.5.1.8 img it saves as a Zip file or does it ? 2) what is the current best / most stable ROM - I have a TFT, kernel version 2.6.29 3) is it best to do a full backup of the old 2.1 ROM ..... and this is done with clockwork right? 4) also I read some stuff about partitioning the SD card ? what is this about ? 5) does putting a new ROM on get rid of the Orange crap ? Any help appreciated please Cheers Steve Edited January 23, 2011 by stevew69

Good luck

Guest StevenHarperUK Posted January 23, 2011 Report Posted January 23, 2011 1) when I download the 2.5.1.8 img it saves as a Zip file or does it ? Yes either unzip it with ASTRO or download on your PC and use clockwork to mount the SDCard over USB and drag it onto the phone. 2) what is the current best / most stable ROM - I have a TFT, kernel version 2.6.29 Any of the 2.2 ROMS with a source kernel 3) is it best to do a full backup of the old 2.1 ROM ..... and this is done with clockwork right? Yes do the backup in clockwork its nicknamed a nandroid 4) also I read some stuff about partitioning the SD card ? what is this about ? That's for people that want to use A2SD - 2.2 has MOve 2 SD - you don't need it. 5) does putting a new ROM on get rid of the Orange crap ? Yes - unless the ROM you have on has "orange Crap"

Steve The only problem with this stage is choosing the best ROM, you will not find the best one overall, it is really a matter of trying the one that appeals to you, personally I have been using the FLB-Froyo 6 as this one seems to give me what i am looking for e.g. fast, stable & with all the basic functionality.
Guest stevew69 Posted January 23, 2011 Report Posted January 23, 2011 Cheers all for advice again Steve - great video. To clarify a couple of things .... The ROM I choose has got to have the same MD5 as the Clockwork mod ? (as in video) Save old ROM using Clockwork ...... what do you mean "nicknamed a nandroid" ? Cheers
Guest Posted January 23, 2011 Report Posted January 23, 2011 Follow this guide, it's straight forward. http://orangesanfrancisco.co.uk/android/ho...isco-zte-blade/
Guest stevew69 Posted January 23, 2011 Report Posted January 23, 2011 Ok done the Power off - Power on Vol down pressed. Did a full backup (got the usual two erros regarding SD folders). Rebooted fine. Is that backup classed as a 'Nandroid' or do I have to do some other process to get one of those ? Sorry for being a pain but its all a bit scarey as I don't want a new paperweight ! lol Steve

A big thank you to this site ...... best resource by far on the web. Keep up the good work. I'm in the process of looking for a good 2.2 too, and although I have a little more knowledge than you I'm still deciding. I have been on 2.1 for a while now and even that is a few releases old - I just can't be doing with constantly changing. Paul does some very good work and his R11 looks good tho I have read some fixes may need to be applied, you can only currently get that if you subscribe - his current general release is R7 I think but I would wait for a later one if I were you - if that's the developer you decide to use. I personal favourite is Sebastian as his ROM were very lightweight and leave the additional components up to the user, tho he seems to be tied up in other things at the moment so nothing new has come out for a while. Same goes for Flibblesan - another good developer, he also seems to be taking a break though. A lot of people are using the Jap jelly ROM, which seems good and releases come pretty regular - I personally think it's got too much going on, but that's my opinion. The best thing to do is have a read through the ROM threads and if you are at the point where your phone has no personal data and apps on it you can just try them all out for a few days and see what you like best. A lot of it is down to personal preference and for that you need to try some out.

JJ RSL8 seems very popular and also read the Sebastian ones are good. As for subscribing ..... happy to for a good ROM. Steve
