Guest isambard Posted January 24, 2011 Report Posted January 24, 2011 When things go wrong, people complain and with the low price of the Blade, many people jump to the conclusion that it is down to bad manufacturing. Are there any people here who have a problem free blade but are just not saying anything because it just works? I wondered, because I bought 3 blades: one is broken (bad flash ram), one is in use and has the occasional frozen digitiser, one is with my mum who super-glued the back on, so i assume she has had no digitizer freeze requiring battery removal yet. maybe if you have a perfect phone you could say what ROM you are running on it. Thanks.
Guest targetbsp Posted January 24, 2011 Report Posted January 24, 2011 Mine works fine. The digitiser freeze is fixed in all the newer froyo roms isn't it? But yeah i provide tech support on a forum and when someone comes along and comments on all the issues I point out this is cause you never see anyone come along and create a thread saying "i don't need any help. bye"
Guest Geoff2 Posted January 24, 2011 Report Posted January 24, 2011 My first phone developed a fault: in a call, I could hear the other person but they couldn't hear me. I assume this was a hardware fault, as the only thing I'd done to it was unlock it and install a few apps from the Market. My replacement phone is completely trouble-free. I've now installed Seb's desoftened 2.2 Rom, rooted it, and installed quite a lot of software and a 16gig SD card. Never had a freeze, a shut-down or anything - it just does what it's supposed to. Performance-wise, it's good enough for me. On some of the higher levels of Angry Birds, you have to wait 10 seconds or so for the CPU to catch up, but I can live with that. The only remaining issue I had was battery-life, however that's now well and truly resolved: I just use the 'Power Widget' and leave everything switched off until I need to use it. I also make sure I switch off the screen immediately after I finish using it. I've been using my phone normally, with a bit of web browsing, about an hour of music, a few apps, a bit of messaging and a few calls. I've had nearly three days out of it and it's still showing half battery. (I did also follow the advice in the 'super-effective' extend your battery life thread. That may well have helped, but I found it was using the power widget that made a huge difference for me.

Guest Quu Posted January 24, 2011 Report Posted January 24, 2011 I have no problems at all on Japanese Jellyfish Release 8, Finnish Blade from Saunalahti. Also: new kernel (included in new froyo rom's) is solving some of "touchscreen freezes"
Guest Rotmann Posted January 24, 2011 Report Posted January 24, 2011 (edited) I have purchased a total of 10 :) SanFrans untill now and luckily untill now none of them had problems. The first three for me, my wife and my best friend in November, grey OLEDs, ran BladeVillain 1.0.1 and then Sebastian404's Froyo with all the fixes and new kernel applied. People were so amazed that I had to buy another 3 white ones (my syster, my wife AGAIN - loves white, does not care about OLED - and a good buddy) and 4 LCD grey ones (uncle and nephew from best friend, my sister's friend and my godfather's son  ). They are running Flibblesan's Froyo RLS6 fixed by Danz0l. In 2-3 months I will have to purchase 2-3 more :) We just say that the SanFran is cheap and this is the reason why it has problems. Just take a look at the DesireHD with it's miserable speaker and battery or at the Samsung Galaxy S with the lag and GPS problems. They cost 3-4 times more but are still far away from perfect. Guest Pully Posted January 24, 2011 Report Posted January 24, 2011 OLED Orange UK phone running 2.2 Japanese Jellyfish RLS8 ROM - no hardware issues, no digitizer screen freezes on this ROM (I used to get them on earlier 2.2 ROMs). Very happy with my purchase.

Very happy with my purchase. +1 from me OLED 2.2 JJ RLS8 no problems. Light user (10 - 15 mins calls, txts, little browsing, no GPS and no auto sync) and battery life is 36 - 48 hours.

Thanks. My phone hardware is fine. I'm careful with it - for example, putting the back on, switch-end first. The back fits nicely, and the power switch seems like it was when it came out of the box. I've run a variety of roms, going from OrangeUK B05 (its OLED), to Seb's de-orangeated, then KK's Hedgehog, Fillyjonk, Snow (repartitioned) and currently Jellyfish. Its mildly overclocked, and (on idle) underclocked. I've got a 16gb sdcard in, without any drama at all. Irritations? Wifi. Its far from perfect at reconnecting to my own Netgear router. Usually its just a bit slow (20 sec for JJ7, maybe because my SSID is hidden.) Reception sensitivity (range) isn't as good as my laptop, but its quite OK. Bluetooth. Jellyfish has the common 2.2 bug exposed by Vlingo, and said to be fixed in 2.2.1 ... and its a source of some puzzlement to me that my two pretty basic, ostensibly similar Bluetooth headsets actually operate differently! A simple very short press of the button answers/ends a call with the Jabra - otherwise its ignored, but the Samsung isn't ignored, it does a last number redial ... wtf should they be different??? And the lack of Flash (for iPlayer). I accept no-camera-flash, and make allowance. Sound routing control (and potential) for Ringing/Alarms/Call-Audio/Media seems to be 'messy' in Android, and ZTE's implementation ain't perfect, but it'll do for now. So, just the usual, really. Essentially software, thus potentially fixable. Touch wood, my phone's hardware has been rock-solid so far ... No, its not an iPad, just a great value for money basic Android phone ... with brilliant "community" support.
Guest gambieter Posted January 24, 2011 Report Posted January 24, 2011 (edited) I have now bought 9 OSF's (most for others, both OLED and TFT), of which 2 had problems (both TFT), but were exchanged for ones that work fine (one TFT, one OLED). Yes, the chassis is squeaking on my own one (one of the early OLEDs), but it works fine and already has had most of the ROMs published here... Edited January 24, 2011 by gambieter

They cost 3-4 times more but are still far away from perfect. i agree, especially on the point of more expensive phones being far from perfect. i am really considering another phone because for me the lack of a physical keyboard is a big usability hit. but when you see that a desire z costs 5-6 times more and may have other problems you don't know about, it's hard to sink that extra cash into it. to be honest, the only issues i have with the blade are: - lack of physical keyboard - poor camera? - unreliable hardware? the keyboard is a given. the camera is actually not as bad as i thought. smudges on the bad plastic cover contribute to bad photos and cleaning removing this makes the camera much better. i've had some great results with it even in low-light. however, it would be nice to have a better camera. the reliability is the other factor, since i had one failed blade and another with occasional screen lock-ups, i'm reluctant to rely on it completely. at the moment, it has become my primary phone with my main SIM card, but i still carry my E71 with a back-up SIM and will do so until i feel comfortable relying on the blade. surprisingly, the battery life has not been as big an issue (compared to the e71 which lasts forever) as the micro USB cable means, i can top it up in many places (e.g. at work, at friend's house etc.). the ability to load custom ROMs and customise the OS is a HUGE feature and i would want this in any future android phone.
Guest lixcab Posted January 24, 2011 Report Posted January 24, 2011 ... because it just works? Steve Job's favorite line. It just works! Anyway, mine works OK. OLED bought last november running MCR 2.2 R11. Having said that, I've since come to realise that a smartphone needs to be able to keep up with me. I need a battery that would last longer than 9 hours, I want faster or multiple CPU threading because I just hate the lag. A better network than Orange (better at least in the sense that I get a good reception at work and data working even on peak times [i think it's stilly that Orange's solution to bad 3G throughput is to switch to GSM network!]) Yes, I just want a smartphone that works!
Guest hecatae Posted January 24, 2011 Report Posted January 24, 2011 had no issues with mine, even though I've tried to kill it with roms. running modaco 2.1 r4, and I have no reason to upgrade as everything works
Guest sads45 Posted January 24, 2011 Report Posted January 24, 2011 I have no problems with JJ Rel 8 on a TFT sf. I am very impressed with the phone considering the low cost.
Guest Rotmann Posted January 24, 2011 Report Posted January 24, 2011 running modaco 2.1 r4, and I have no reason to upgrade as everything works Upgrade to 2.2, you won't regret it. Performance is much faster, native Apps2SD, better memory management and so on.
Guest wbaw Posted January 24, 2011 Report Posted January 24, 2011 (edited) My first one had a bad digitiser, but my new replacement one has been perfect so far. Only problems I have are the wifi problem & sometimes when phone is plugged into usb at startup it'll say 'blank sd card'. It's from the new batch with LEAD displays & white power buttons. I think zte are fixing the manufacturing problems they had in the past, the new ones seem good. Edited January 24, 2011 by wbaw
Guest sensory Posted January 24, 2011 Report Posted January 24, 2011 Never had a problem with my Blade. I bought mine as soon as they were released here in the UK, and have run MCR, Flibble's and I'm now running Japanese Jellyfish r8. No issues at all.
Guest xenopod Posted January 24, 2011 Report Posted January 24, 2011 had my sf since october and no problems at all, love it. great phone for the money
Guest phlum Posted January 24, 2011 Report Posted January 24, 2011 I got a Blade but unfortunately the power button bust within a few weeks - installed the stock ROM, took it back to Orange yesterday and they replaced it. The replacement seems to be working fine at the moment, running Japanese Jellyfish RLS6. Is it too eager to flash Froyo the day after getting your phone?
Guest T3KO Posted January 24, 2011 Report Posted January 24, 2011 No real problems here, have an "old" swiss blade (old case not the new shiny one).
Guest daisyhayseed Posted January 24, 2011 Report Posted January 24, 2011 Dear OSF I've had you for 3 months without any problems, not even the commonly reported screen freeze issue. We've tried a number of different ROMs together and now happily settled on the jelly range. A friend of mine was going to buy a Wildfire until he saw you running froyo. Now he has hooked up with one of your friends and he is very happy as well. Love from Daz

Guest Len Ash Posted January 24, 2011 Report Posted January 24, 2011 Had a total of 12 (4 OLED/8 TFT) through my hands for various family/friends and the odd "test bed" which I sold on after a few days. I buy from CPW (stopped selling them now though), Orange shops and Argos. Out of the 12, 3 have had DoA faults straight from the sealed box. 1 had no response at all from the touch screen. 1 had no reliable access to the SD card (tried others in it) and 1 had a partially blank display AND no Wifi at all... The lack of full testing is reflected in the price. So you pays yer money. However, in every case, the phones have been replaced promptly. And NOT exchanged for refurbs thank you. On the whole, these are interesting devices that are good value. As for the longevity, we don't know yet. I suspect not great. However, I also expect there to be a fairly active spares market soon. Amongst the spares we will probably see replacement cases, battery covers, batteries, digitisers, LCDs (but not OLEDs thanks to Samsung), and possibly a few components like on/off switches. The phones are dead easy to strip down. One thing I did note is that the various aerials are screen printed on the case under the battery cover. A slight nick in one of the tracks will cause havoc... Enjoy until the next new toy!
Guest bear807 Posted January 25, 2011 Report Posted January 25, 2011 own it since october, the oled one so far so good on r5 2.2 cant be bother to flash it anymore, only con for this probably the battery life, drop so fast perhaps i have many things on desktop require constant data access. It lives a tough life too been using the wireless ap day and night for a month or 2, battery constantly at hight at 44-45 degress still everything is working fine, no digitizer problem with me! for £99 pounds (i got mine £60 pounds) is a deal breaker!
Guest deadonthestairs Posted January 25, 2011 Report Posted January 25, 2011 Me - I'm happy enough with mine running the stock ROM, but unlocked, and de-orange'd. I do intend updating to a froyo at some point, but going to wait for a while. I'm exactly the same. Unlocked and de-Orange'd, but waiting for a 'perfect' 2.2 rom before changing, and once I've read up and know exactly what I'm doing. No problems for me.
