I know this will seem a bit old tech, but is it possible to connect the Orange San Francisco (Android 2.2) to my local computer network / internet via the USB cable plugged into the computer?

not that i've found.

reverse tethering is what you want.

it seems we're along in this as the question has been asked previously, and those who asked were looked at as if they were mental

but yes, theres huge advantage to connect phone to computer with USB, and use computer as network interface.

If you are using the 03z based froyo releases then install "JoinMe" from the upload thread and then on your phone select wifi & networks -> tethering -> usb tethering, works like a charm and also keeps your phone charged.

You need rndis support on the phone (your desktop linux should already have it).

The android then needs to do dhcp client request over the rdnis interface and your PC needs a DHCP server listening on it's rndis interface.

I've used most of the right words in mostly the right order, enough to jog someone who is clued up on the doing of it. I didn't have to think about this since I left windows mobile behind; and in those days the device usually didn't have WLAN so it was more important.

I imagine work will need doing in android to make it care about an rndis interface, maybe it would want aliasing to eth1 depending on how flexible the android code was.
