Guest tonynz Posted January 25, 2011 Report Posted January 25, 2011 Silly question but can I charge my Blade with the iPhone power adapter with the USB plug? Charging via USB is sooooooo slow!
Guest Sebastian404 Posted January 25, 2011 Report Posted January 25, 2011 yeah, no problem, I do it all time.
Guest tonynz Posted January 25, 2011 Report Posted January 25, 2011 Awesome, at least some use can be made of my iphone 3G.
Guest bluemotion Posted January 25, 2011 Report Posted January 25, 2011 Silly question but can I charge my Blade with the iPhone power adapter with the USB plug? Charging via USB is sooooooo slow! Takes me only 2hours to get 100% starting at about 25%
Guest tonynz Posted January 26, 2011 Report Posted January 26, 2011 Takes me about two hours to gain 10% - maybe it's my USB port on my PC at work..
Guest Ricey155 Posted January 26, 2011 Report Posted January 26, 2011 Takes me about two hours to gain 10% - maybe it's my USB port on my PC at work.. yeah usb is really slow, im using my virgin box usb to charge my phone over night  ive got a long usb splitter for both phones running out the back its on all night no extra electic costs :)

Surely it will increase the load.
Guest Phoenix Silver Posted January 27, 2011 Report Posted January 27, 2011 i do the opposite i charge my ipod video with the wall charger of the blade (i have lost the ipod one)
Guest Ash_P Posted January 27, 2011 Report Posted January 27, 2011 ive got a long usb splitter for both phones running out the back its on all night no extra electic costs  Errr, of course they'll be extra electric costs. But it's such a small amount it's not worth worrying about.
Guest wakaru Posted January 27, 2011 Report Posted January 27, 2011 Errr, of course they'll be extra electric costs. But it's such a small amount it's not worth worrying about. It'll surely be more energy efficient than using the mains charger to achieve the same goal, however I disagree on it being "such a small amount it's not worth worrying about".

Guest wakaru Posted January 27, 2011 Report Posted January 27, 2011 the amount of electricity used to charge the phone will be the same whichever you use. you can't seriously think otherwise can you? I know the electricity used for the charge process will be exactly the same in both cases however, assuming that the router is always going to have to be plugged in and turned on in both cases, I believe that the dissipated/generated heat will be higher when requiring an additional charger to be plugged in as opposed to charging the phone from the router's USB port instead. This is what I meant by being a more energy efficient charging process. Anyways, I am no electrician here, so I could as well be wrong.
Guest oh!dougal Posted January 27, 2011 Report Posted January 27, 2011 the amount of electricity used to charge the phone will be the same whichever you use. you can't seriously think otherwise can you? The efficiency will probably be different. And nowhere near 100%. The same amount of energy should get into the phone battery, but all sorts of things will affect the amount of energy lost along the way. The real world is much messier than theory. But a charger that runs cooler is wasting less energy ... (unless you are using it to heat something ...)
Guest Magnets Posted January 27, 2011 Report Posted January 27, 2011 It'll surely be more energy efficient than using the mains charger to achieve the same goal, however I disagree on it being "such a small amount it's not worth worrying about". IMO it would probably use less power since you are only using one transformer (where most energy is lost?). But we don't know what the VM box is doing inside, and how efficient it is. I just measured my mains charger and it draws 5W, so it really is nothing to worry about. Running the mains charger for 1 hour/day will cost you 2p a month (assuming 14p/unit). If the VM box is more efficient, the savings really are nothing worth worrying about
Guest rowanmoor Posted January 27, 2011 Report Posted January 27, 2011 I have had my charger (the one that came with the phone) plugged in through a power meter for the last 2 weeks. I wanted to check if it used any power when not charging and haven't got round to removing the meter. So far, after charging my phone every couple of days, I have yet to reach a total of 1p. Now, the meters have a reputation for not being so accurate with very low power draws, but even if it is a few hundred percent out, that is still in the region of pennies a year. And by the way it does not register any power draw at all when not charging. It could be drawing power below the sensitivity of the meter, but that is probably low enough to not worry about.
Guest Ash_P Posted January 27, 2011 Report Posted January 27, 2011 It'll surely be more energy efficient than using the mains charger to achieve the same goal Why? The efficency of a virgin box vs power adapter cannot be guessed by just looking at them.
