Guest oldfella Posted January 26, 2011 Report Posted January 26, 2011 using Modaco 2.1 R4 customised with my apps in Rom, but have kept Rom size to that of the original ROM system storage is reporting 70MB free - is there any reason why I cant use that by putting more apps in ROM ? thanks .. Mike

Mike no reason at all if you know how to do it, or you can use the hungary update/TPT to resize system and give more space to data to make it even easier
Guest oldfella Posted January 26, 2011 Report Posted January 26, 2011 thanks for that - maybe will switch to more advanced Roms later - at the moment learning how android works

Mike thanks for that - maybe will switch to more advanced Roms later - at the moment learning how android works An important part of your understanding will come when you learn that the rom is divided into different parts. The bit called /system contains, yes, lots of Android system stuff, but also "apps-in-the-rom". There's usually plenty spare space in /system --- BUT (unless you fiddle things) that spare space is just wasted. Hence many devs did produce "fat" roms, piling in lots of vaguely useful stuff into the (otherwise unused) spare space. Apps that you add, and updates to the ones "in the downloaded rom" get put into a different part, called /data. Right now, you have plenty room in there for more (most apps are much less than 5mb - but games are typically rather big). Within the forum, "partitioning" technology has been evolved, to change the sizes of the data and system (and newly cache) partitions. This enables /system to be no bigger than needed, and all the spare space is re-allocated to /data for you to use with apps of your choice. Edited January 26, 2011 by oh!dougal
Guest oldfella Posted January 26, 2011 Report Posted January 26, 2011 thanks - I think I understand that - what I have been doing is downloading interesting apps, and once they become permanent, adding them to the original ROM in /system/app, then reflashing the ROM after removing the stuff I dont need like launcher2 and adobe reader etc it all seems to work. I now have 70MB free in system storage and 100MB free in internal storage; so ready for Mark2 ROM flash with the clarification that I can grow the original ROM to fill the spare space. I reckon I can carry on like this for a while avoiding partiotioning until I am more comfortable
