Guest mrbill1234 Posted January 27, 2011 Report Posted January 27, 2011 (edited) The Wifi issues are well known - and i've got the wifi-fix app installed which toggles my wifi on-and-off when I come out of standby. I do find this to be a bit of a PITA because it means I don't get any notifications of e-mail etc when my phone is in wifi-only mode and in standby. One thing I have noticed though is that when my phone is plugged into the charger, wifi stays up. Only when i'm running off battery power does it drop. I wonder if this is not something set in the phone chipset (outside the reach of the android OS) in some attempt to save power. I also wonder if it is something which can be changed. Has anyone else noticed this? Edited January 27, 2011 by mrbill1234
Guest Magnets Posted January 27, 2011 Report Posted January 27, 2011 It is well known. But there is no fix for the problem yet, just workarounds.

Guest mrbill1234 Posted January 27, 2011 Report Posted January 27, 2011 Have you tried changing the wi-if sleep policy? The default is sleep "When screen turns off". Mine is set to 'never' I'm trying that 'wifi keep alive' program. So far no lock, but i've not enabled the workarounds.
Guest wbaw Posted January 27, 2011 Report Posted January 27, 2011 (edited) Being plugged in prevents the phone from sleeping, so it keeps the wifi up. There are ways to prevent it sleeping while on battery too, but that would mean the battery will only last a few hours. I think it's set outside android too & I don't think it'd be impossible to fix, just extremely hard if you don't have the source code. Edited January 27, 2011 by wbaw
Guest swordtail Posted January 27, 2011 Report Posted January 27, 2011 I keep seeing this "My Wifi does not keep connection when asleep" So here is my take on it.Why would would you want it on when it sleeps? I don't get it! it will drain your battery quicker than anything, do you not think that this is what it is intended to do,so why wait for a "Fix" when it's not broken? Surely that's why if you Buy/use a smart phone you have a data plan that takes over when Wifi is unavailable. If you don't have or can't afford 3g/data package buy a normal phone ffs.
Guest wbaw Posted January 27, 2011 Report Posted January 27, 2011 It is broken because setting wifi sleep policy to never doesn't work. If the option is there, it should work as expected.
Guest swordtail Posted January 27, 2011 Report Posted January 27, 2011 It is broken because setting wifi sleep policy to never doesn't work. If the option is there, it should work as expected. It does when connected to external power because battery discharge is not an issue then, but under battery power it turns off perfectly reasonable to me. Ok lets have a little scenario wifi stays on all day under battery power let's say you break down or are stuck out in the middle of nowhere on your push bike no problem I'll just phone mum/dad the AA even but Oh sh!t battery has gone flat I wonder why that happened then? It just seems common designer sense to have it as it is that's all I'm saying.
Guest wbaw Posted January 27, 2011 Report Posted January 27, 2011 It should be a user configurable option, maybe have the default to wifi off when screen is off, but keeping the wifi alive should be an option, in the ui it looks like an option, but it's just there to tease you. It'd still cause the phone to drain the battery faster, but not as much as needing to leave an app running accessing the network every few seconds & using the cpu as well as having the wifi running. You should probably turn wifi off when leaving the house anyway.
