Guest Cloud Warrior Posted January 29, 2011 Report Posted January 29, 2011 (edited) Hello all I am planing to get a San Francisco as from what I've read and the little I understand it seems a great bit of kit. Planing to get it from Orange at £109, through topcash for £12.12 money back. Any better way ?. For what I want out of a phone - MP3 player - WiFi - Web browser that can take majority of sites and plug ins - Access to free and wide range of apps and play a game like Angry Birds without major issues the SF is just what's needed. I understand not to expect this to fly through everything but will it be atleast bearable in each task ?. Reading the guides on the forums I should be able to remove all the orange apps and put on anything I want, I can help its performance and fix any issues it may have software side of things ?. Does each colour have any differences other than the case ?. What about the screen type. I have read a little but cant see anything about it on the Orange listing for the SF. Even typing this and looking back at the guides I'm getting more confused and feel way out of my depth. For the hassle I will get into is it worth getting the SF and essentially removing all the factory installed software and replace the lot with the custom files on here ?. I feel bad asking when there are guides above me but I would appreciate validation and confirmation on what I want/expect. I feel I am building this up to being such a huge thing for me to do and I am nervous as heck !. I feel dizzy when I try to think where to start on reading as I just cant absorb anything. No joke. The idea of all the little things like - upgrading the Android software, removing the orange branded tosh, putting on a good email app, getting some free games, a good calender app, figuring out ROM'S, trying to up its performance .... Just a huge list in my mind that makes any confidence drop. Apologies again. I have read the best I could on the guides. I don't mean to seem like I am expecting the job done for me but some simple advice and validation on my impressions. I just hope the above mess I've typed is atleast readable. ;) Edited January 29, 2011 by Cloud Warrior
Guest The Soup Thief Posted January 29, 2011 Report Posted January 29, 2011 Long question, but short answer... Yes Follow the rooting guides to the letter (they are really - and increasingly - clear thanks to the work of Stephen Harper) and within a very short time you'll have a phone that does all you want and more. Just stick a recent Froyo firmware on there and it'll be more stable than with Orange's original effort and you shouldn't need to do anything complex again, unless you choose to
Guest Lew247 Posted January 29, 2011 Report Posted January 29, 2011 Although there are many posts on this subject I'll tell you my story I got an Android for the first time a few months ago Until then I was a Nokia person, I would never ever consider anything else. I bought this phone after reading a review on it before it got as popular as it is now. After getting the phone home, I charged it up, turned it on downloaded angry birds and it played fine but I read the posts on here and I wanted to get rid of the Orange stuff, It was just annoying me being there although it was doing no harm People said it slowed the phone down b ut the phone was fast enough and a LOT faster than the Nokia 5800 I had previously Anyway to cut a long story short, I followed the guides, rooted the phone, installed clockwork mod, done a backup, restored the backup just to make sertain it all worked then installed one of the custom roms, I think it was the Modaco r4 2.1 rom possibly After installing I thought I'd done something wrong as it took what seemed forever to start, but i waited, i went and made a cuppa When I came back the phone had booted and was running the nice new custom rom, and yes it was a fair bit faster. After that i started experimenting, reading, researching and within a week I had changed the splash screen changed the boot animations and changed some of the icons in the flash file The phone is SO simple to mod, no you don't have to do it if you don't want, the phone works fine as it comes But it works SO much better with a custom rom, not needed but it is a lot nicer And with the 2.2 roms you can move the apps to the sd card freeing up the phone memory, ass well as turning your phone into a portable mini wireless router, so if you ever lose your internet connection at home for any reason - just connect your laptop/computer wirelessly to the phone and use it as a modem. Works great - bit slow but it works and is good when you need it. That's what I did but what you do is entirely up to you. For the record moving to this phone from Nokia was the best move I ever made, the phone is 1000 times better. The only time I "Might" consider going back to Nokia would be if they ever released a DECENT Android phone with at least a dual core processor, amled screen or better, 4-4.5" screen size with a decent resolution, android 2.3, and the price was as cheap as the one ZTE will no doubt bring out later this year or next - it stands to reason they are not going to stand still - they have a winning phone they will release new ones way better but with a decent price to stay at number 5 in the world or even climb higher.
Guest Frankish Posted January 29, 2011 Report Posted January 29, 2011 Even if you're stuck. Create a thread or pm a member such as me. We can help, i'm on here a hell of a lot. We like to help you just have to be willing to help yourself. The basics though, 1. Root and install custom recovery. (Clockworkmod usually) 2. Choose and flash a new 2.2 rom. That's way better than removing Orange stuff etc. It looks like there is a lot to do but there really isn't.
Guest shadowninty Posted January 29, 2011 Report Posted January 29, 2011 (edited) not to confuse you but: the simplest thing to do is goto the Japanese Jellyfish ROM thread here, download the image version, unzip it to your phones SD and hold the two buttons at boot ;) EDIT: I came from a Nokia 5800 clone (5530) massive difference Edited January 29, 2011 by shadowninty
Guest Cloud Warrior Posted January 29, 2011 Report Posted January 29, 2011 Thanks for the information and encouraging replys all. I was a little reluctant to ask as there was an informative guide and other similar topics, for which I do apologise for. I like to get direct confirmation to me asking a question for a greater sense of peace, clarification and justifying what little knowledge I have absorbed. Think I am now confident enough to sort out ordering the phone. Looking at the top thread about buying the phone online. Argos seems the cheapest on the current deals but would getting it from Orange directly with £10 credit for £109 delivered and then £12.12 cashback through topcash be better ?. I have never bought a phone directly from a provider. Is the slightly higher price at Argos more favourable due to Orange for some reason ?. Argos don't seem to have online stock and are OOS in my area. One final clarification question/s - Any pros & cons in colour ?. Grey V White are there any differences other than case colour. And while most reviews where made upon the SF release they all mention it having an OLED (?) screen which was exceptional. Orange website has no info for the SF but my random google searches have told me that some SF phones may have a TFT screen. Its the curse of original release information and information during the rumoured change. Going to "recycle" my 5800 at fonebank as they seem the best for price. Any others that are trust worthy ?. I only know/trust fonebank as I was recommended and I have sent in a old phone before without issue. And after another short story post I will say thank you again. I hope in the coming weeks I get to become more of a part of the community and hopefully help someone else out. ;)
Guest steveuk1981 Posted January 29, 2011 Report Posted January 29, 2011 ive just upgraded to sebs new 2.2 rom ( im a newbie) i was canny nervous, but followed steve harpers guide/video and it worked 1st time ;) this is my 1st android phone and ive been recommending it to everyone. id deffo say get `1 and give it a try.
Guest adeng7 Posted January 29, 2011 Report Posted January 29, 2011 As to the question white vs grey, I have heard that the paint job on the white version isn't up to much and will scratch off, never seen one in the flesh though. If all the talk of rooting etc scares you, as it did me when I first got my blade, try universal androot, search around the forum for it. Its an app for your phone to root your phone, no need to flash etc.

The grey one hes a sort of rubberised coating that can wear off. The white one has a gloss finish... nothing to wear away.

Guest Cloud Warrior Posted January 29, 2011 Report Posted January 29, 2011 (edited) Thanks again. Colour was of no big issue for me on was only interested about hardware. if the grey has a chance of the better screen I will go for that one. Plan to get a skin for it. Feebay seems bare for the SF range. One or two skins and the rest are "socks". Will sort out the order through Orange online. I would go instore but to afraid of them putting a contract on me. I am bad at resisting the deal and struggle to say NO !. Going to start looking around for compatible games and what apps are around. Hopefully have the phone early in next week and start on the customizing soon after. I just want Angry Birds. I played it for my first time a few days back on a Samsung Galaxy S. Very nice phone but way out of my means to get. EDIT - Can I go online from my PC and get games and apps now in preparation ?. If so does region have any part in what I can get ?. Guest WinterWonderland Posted January 29, 2011 Report Posted January 29, 2011 I bought an AMOLED screen off ebay after reading on here about the SF. Great phone only downside is the s*** battery. Honest to god it is so stupidly easy to mod this phone it is unreal, if only the damn battery could take more than one day it would be the perfect phone to be quiet honest.
Guest Phoenix Silver Posted January 29, 2011 Report Posted January 29, 2011 you could download apk's from your pc, transfer to phone and then install so... yes and there are no 'region' limitations yes www.androlib.com i f you install a barcode reader in the phone just shoot the barcode on the screen and app download in your phone or donwload it in your pc and sd card and install from sd card

Guest SqueakyG Posted January 30, 2011 Report Posted January 30, 2011 (edited) Hello all I am planing to get a San Francisco as from what I've read and the little I understand it seems a great bit of kit. Even typing this and looking back at the guides I'm getting more confused and feel way out of my depth. For the hassle I will get into is it worth getting the SF and essentially removing all the factory installed software and replace the lot with the custom files on here ?. I got a San Francisco last week. I have not yet gone as far as install a custom ROM (though I probably will soon). But I can give you a brief review of the phone. I'll start with some criticisms, actually. Some things that nobody else has ever mentioned: sound quality is disappointing. The sound isn't quite loud enough at top volume, either through the speaker or the earpiece. Ringtones don't play very loud - I wouldn't hear the phone ringing over traffic - and in-call volume isn't very loud either - I might not hear a person speaking over traffic. Also there is a loud hiss when listening to any media, like mp3 or FM radio, especially with headphones. Perhaps my handset is unlucky... it's not "broken" enough to take back, but it's generally poor. Also, the TFT screen has a very blue tint with cold whites, and isn't quite bright enough. As for grey or white: I got grey, but I'm starting to find the texture unpleasant in my hands. It's plastic with a slightly rubberised surface. I like the plain hard plastic of the white case, but I didn't like white. More bad news: Angry Birds doesn't play flawlessly. It loads up nice and fast, and the first few levels may be smooth. But then a level with lots of objects loads, and it grinds down to a halt for 10 seconds. Then grinds down again when you fire a bird. The 600mhz processor just can't handle the physics (in combination with Andorid 2.1 not being as optimised as 2.2). So yeah, although all the reviews say it's an absolute no-brainer for £100, there are some real "budget" aspects. It's not a great phone, it's a £100 phone. But it's my first Android experience, and there's a lot to enjoy too! I've had a great time discovering Android, and all the cool things this phone can do that my cheapy phones couldn't! As for all the customisation done by the folks on this forum, my advice is to take it slow. Learn the phone first. See how you like it without making any modifications. Then do one thing at a time. This forum is a pretty hardcore community of ROM hobbyists. The average person who walks out of the Orange Shop with this handset will not do any of the things that are made to appear necessary on this forum! So go at your own pace. Very first step: Understand that you should ignore the Orange apps. They are ripoff versions of standard Android apps, except they require you to be connected to their data network and sign up for their crap. 2) Use "Homescreen launcher" to switch to "Launcher", the stock basic way Android 2.1 looks, giving you a better homescreen. Better yet, download LauncherPro from the Market -- it's better and smoother. 3) Stick like that for a while and see if you like it. The next step is deleting the Orange apps, so that they are out of the way and you have a little more room. It involves rooting the phone. This -- and all complicated stuff -- can now be done with apps directly on the phone, without doing any intimidating stuff with the command line on computers. See this thread for how to remove the Orange apps: http://android.modaco.com/content/zte-blad...eginners-guide/ 4) You might be happy there. Set yourself up with some free apps from the market to compliment what you want to do with your phone. I'm using a calendar called Jorte because it has very flexible widgets; a picture viewer called QuickPic because the standard Gallery is gash; 3G Watchdog to count my data usage; Widgetsoid for much more flexible power button widgets than the included standard; Opera Mini as an alternative web browser, because you'll download less data and get around your network provider's adult content blocks; FancyWidget as an attractive clock, and so on. Oh and Blade Wifi Fix to make the phone reconnect its wifi after sleeping (a bug/feature of this handset). 5) Don't want to be with Orange? It's an easy phone to unlock. You don't even have to pay some guy on Ebay 3 quid either. Go to this website: http://www.nextgenserver.com/calculator/ select ZTE Orange Sanfrancisco, enter your IMEI number from your phone, and there's your unlock code. You enter it when you put another network's SIM in the phone for the first time. It's worth doing if you have another SIM handy, because it takes 10 seconds, and once it's unlocked, it's unlocked. 6) If - and only if - you're ready for more, you can then think about installing a 2.2 Froyo custom ROM (the stage I'm about ready for). Your phone should be running pretty smooth, but it's enticing to know that 2.2 might run Angry Birds better. There are a few to choose from. Try to read the entire threads for the most popular ones to judge their strengths and weaknesses, and understand some common difficulties. Then when you've chosen a 2.2 ROM (probably Paul's modaco, or Japanese Jellyfish are the best bets) this thread makes the whole thing as un-intimidating as possible: http://android.modaco.com/content/zte-blad...-the-zte-blade/ Edited January 30, 2011 by SqueakyG
Guest wbaw Posted January 30, 2011 Report Posted January 30, 2011 (edited) It's got to be the easiest phone to mod. You don't have to do it, but 2.2 runs much better than 2.1. Angry birds runs very smoothly, except some of the most complex levels which can be a little bit jerky, never any 10 second pauses for me. I had it all modded in an hour after opening it & it's my first smartphone. All the new phones are TFT, but it's not a bad screen at all, it's quite a good tft screen. Text looks crisper & it can be brighter compared to oled, downsides are worse viewing angles, contrast & colour reproduction. Edited January 30, 2011 by wbaw

Bear in mind that when you put a new ROM on, you'll have to start from scratch again, so if you've just bought a phone you can get it out of your way immediately before you invest your effort into customising it. I recommend that you get one of the two popular 2.2 ROMS (Japanese Jellyfish and FLB Froyo G2), because putting it on the phone is a relatively simple process compared to fixing nitty gritty problems on the Orange ROM (It may be daunting, but it is simple!), and when you have it it will work better and offer features you wouldn't otherwise have.
Guest Rotmann Posted January 30, 2011 Report Posted January 30, 2011 (edited) Do a Google image search for "white zte blade" and there's a few photos of them chipped up, these may be early prototypes, but the pics were enough to put me off. This is not true, that was a rubberized white SanFran prototype, it has nothing in common with the white UK Blade which is glossy plastic. On the contrary, some grey SF users reported that the rubber coating is coming off while the white ones are OK. Thanks again. Colour was of no big issue for me on was only interested about hardware. if the grey has a chance of the better screen I will go for that one. Plan to get a skin for it. Very nice phone but way out of my means to get. EDIT - Can I go online from my PC and get games and apps now in preparation ?. If so does region have any part in what I can get ?. All new SanFrans have LCD, white or grey. LCD vs. OLED is a long discussion, I have an OLED and my wife has a LCD one, in my eyes they both have advantages and disadvantages that make them equal. OLED has flashy colors and good blacks but text and resolution are not clear because of the pentile matrix, LCD has natural colors and the text is very sharp, blacks and viewing angles are not so good. The white one is glossy plastic, the grey one rubberized matte plastic, go for the one you prefer. Angry Birds runs much better on 2.2, that's why I would put 2.2 on it as soon as I would buy it. Coupled with the wonderful 2.2 advantages (wi-fi and usb tethering, apps2sd etc.) and the better performance, it is the first thing you should do. Also, check ADVERTISING SPAM.co.uk they have it for 89,99+10 too but you can get 5% cashback if they don't reject it. I bought an AMOLED screen off ebay after reading on here about the SF. Great phone only downside is the s*** battery. Honest to god it is so stupidly easy to mod this phone it is unreal, if only the damn battery could take more than one day it would be the perfect phone to be quiet honest. My wife gets 3-4 days on light usage, I get one day on hardcore usage, the battery is indeed much better than most of the smartphones. If you use it like a laptop how can you expect to get the battery life of a dumb phone which does literally nothing? I got a San Francisco last week. I have not yet gone as far as install a custom ROM (though I probably will soon). But I can give you a brief review of the phone. I'll start with some criticisms, actually. Some things that nobody else has ever mentioned: sound quality is disappointing. The sound isn't quite loud enough at top volume, either through the speaker or the earpiece. So yeah, although all the reviews say it's an absolute no-brainer for £100, there are some real "budget" aspects. It's not a great phone, it's a £100 phone. Sound quality is good on a total of 10 SanFrans I got for me and my family friends, did you try to press volume up during calls or music? It is pretty loud and clear excepting the earphones which are not so loud but there are fixes on the forum. No loud hiss here, also some users reported this (search the forum). The screen is also very bright, play with the brightness controls, it blows my eyes away on 75-90%, I always keep it on auto. Maybe you just got unlucky and got not such a good phone or maybe you are too picky. What smartphones did you own untill now? Do think about the DesireHD which has a dreadful battery and an awful speaker or about the Samsung Galaxy S which has lag problems and the GPS is dodgy, although they are 3-4 times more expensive. Guest Cloud Warrior Posted January 30, 2011 Report Posted January 30, 2011 thanks for the continuing information. I appreciate the list of issues to. Also like the in-depth problems as it can keep me aware and to hold my expectations. I know I may seem like I am expecting to much from the phone but so long as it can do majority of tasks well I would be happy. From the little I understand, would a ROM/App etc fix something like the audio through headphones or is it the hardware ?. I would use it as my portable music player and would like it to atleast sound clear. I walk everywhere so the MP3 is a must for me. The comments on Angry Birds - would upgrading the phone to Android 2.2 help ?. As some would guess I am clueless on all the tech side of things. The only "custom" things I own are a Media centre xbox to be more appealing visually and a old PSP to have custom themes. Nether where done by myself and when I go looking through the menus to customize I am lost. Angry Birds (on a Galaxy S) has been my only game played on a mobile phone since early 2000's. As its my first I am using it as a standard to help me understand playability. Is it really that buggy on the phone or is a software fix available ?. I'm not expecting the Galaxy S quality but to atleast be playable. Any other games that are "big and popular" that can be played well on the SF ?. I was hoping for a varied bunch of free games and then I would look into buying a few. I am thinking that the phone may be good for a resource management style game. I have also just started facebook - Would the phone play the games through FB or atleast games of the same quality/depth ?. I really don't like the idea of having to pay real money to progress though. Thanks
Guest shadowninty Posted January 30, 2011 Report Posted January 30, 2011 the Blades ARMv6 processor doesn't support Flash, so FB games are a no no ;) there are plenty of decent games for the Blade, such as Tank Hero, which runs beautifully with HW accell on Froyo
Guest southpaw1 Posted January 30, 2011 Report Posted January 30, 2011 to the op , this thread is now 2 pages long full with helpfull advice and tips , not many devices you buy for sub £100 and could get this much support for , laptop support/cover costs £100`s and you wont get this good a service , therefore Go for it mate , you wont regret it !
Guest Cloud Warrior Posted January 30, 2011 Report Posted January 30, 2011 (edited) Going to purchase it in a bit. I still think the Orange route is the best, unless anyone things they are a hassle ?. SF with £10 credit for £109, going through top cash will get me £12.12. Just cant decide on the colour. I suppose ultimately it will be put in a cover. I just cant find anything special on ebay. ;) Edited January 30, 2011 by Cloud Warrior
