Question about making backup in Clockworkmod

I asked this question in Steven's Guide thread, but it hasn't had an answer, so I'll try starting a thread here.

I have a question about backups. I am going to try a new ROM for the first time (nervous!) so I have done a Clockworkmod backup in preparation, in case I don't like the new ROM or something goes wrong. I would just like to ask if worked out correctly, or if the backup is incomplete. Clockworkmod said:

Backing up boot...

Backing up recovery...

Backing up system...

Backing up data...

No /sdcard/.android_secure found. Skipping backup of applications on external storage.

Backing up cache...

No sd-ext found. Skipping backup of sd-ext.

Generating md5 sum...

Backup complete!

Is that okay or not? Will things be missing from that backup? I'm worried because I will have to wipe cache and data in order to install a custom ROM, but it says these things got skipped. Will this prevent me from fully restoring the phone to the good working condition of the stock 2.1 ROM (as it is at the time of backup)?

Oh, and a trivial question... why do people call it "nandroid"? I don't see the clockworkmod backup feature using the word anywhere.

It means you have no apps installed to your sd-card (they must all be on the phones internal memory) so it's just telling you it's not backing them up because there is nothing to backup.

it's because you don't have ext2 partitions ;) (it's optional)

don't worry all is oki your backup is just fine

I would suggest to try a recovery, immediately after you take the backup, to make sure your backup is functional.

For me, it happened that the MD5 for the data partitions was not properly done, I found out the hard way, when I actually needed the backup.

Luckily, it worked to update the md5 sum with the correct one, in the nandroid.<something> file. Haven't yet found what happened, but since this worked ...

Easy to check
