Guest Jaminben Posted February 1, 2011 Report Posted February 1, 2011 Oh my god not as simple as I first thought... so first my attention was turned to these two guides: http://community.giffgaff.com/t5/Learn-gif...ade/td-p/133709 http://orangesanfrancisco.co.uk/android/ho...-install-a-rom/ These made me realise it wasn't as simple as just deleting orange's stuff, first I have to "root" then something to do with "clockwork" and then I can have "debranded" android OS.... But then I was directed to this forum and I discover there isn't even one agreed OS to replace it with! So my question is, am I able to follow the first guide (GiffGaff) which is getting on a bit now, which uses the debranded "official" android 2.1 software (all I was aware of until 10 mins ago) or will that be pointless? I mean in a week's time will I be wanting the 2.2 stuff? Because really I only want to do this once and have done with it Can someone please tell me the advantages 2.2 has over 2.1 and which version to get/where to get it from? as all versions of 2.2 are "unofficial" does this mean certain things will be unavailable? for example instead of using some kind of app marketplace will I be expected to just put home brew/pirated stuff on myself? how does all this modding of the OS effect apps? I mean I don't want to install 2.2 and then download a load of official apps only for none of them to work or whatever. I guess what I'm asking in short is what is the point in having 2.2 over 2.1? surely debranded 2.1 is the best as its official google stuff with the only thing changed being the removal of Orange's turd? Is 2.2 really just aimed at hardcore modders such as yourselves and noobs like me are better off sticking to the official stuff? Or is it a bit like Internet Explorer vs Firefox where Firefox just outright pwns despite not coming on windows? (only example i can think of to do with software) So confused! All I was looking for originally was to remove orange's software because the reviews said it slowed it down and their apps are rubbish. ;) Help meeeeeeeee please

Get your San Fran and stick a 2.2 on, you won't regret it.
Guest womble_sanfran Posted February 1, 2011 Report Posted February 1, 2011 In my opinion the Stock 2.1 works fine once you remove the Orange rubbish, if you bought your OSF as a everyday phone then it will work fine. If you want to wow your iphone owning friends, play complex games, are interested in tweaking settings, figuring out how to fix bugs or are one of these people who must have the most up-to-date things then you will want to update your ROM. To me my OSF is a phone first and foremost, these other bits are nice to haves, I am therefore still on the stock ROM and am waiting for a super stable 2.2 rom before upgrading. The last thing I want is a new ROM that makes my phone unstable when I need it most. I have read through all the different ROM threads, all of them still have bugs that would annoy me, it is up to you to read those same threads and decide if the behaviours/bugs people are reporting would annoy you or not….. only you can make that decision.
Guest Lew247 Posted February 1, 2011 Report Posted February 1, 2011 The same kind of question has been answered many times in the past, I suggest you look through the posts here are "Some" of them http://android.modaco.com/index.php?act=Se...te=%2Bwhich+rom My advice install one of the 2.2 roms, much faster and more features than the 2.1's and ignore the "giffgaff" guide" its outdated. Follow one of the excellent guides on here
Guest Dan Diplo Posted February 1, 2011 Report Posted February 1, 2011 The new Modaco guide - How to Install a Custom ROM on the ZTE Blade - is probably your best bet to follow. It can look daunting, but if you break it down into steps and take it slowly it shouldn't be too difficult. I think the main problem most people have is 'What ROM to chose'? I can't answer this, since I'm in the same boat, but do note that the more bleeding-edge ROMS often can perform better, but at the expense of some stability. Now might be a good chance to check out a few different ROMs and see what you think yourself.
Guest Jaminben Posted February 1, 2011 Report Posted February 1, 2011 (edited) The same kind of question has been answered many times in the past, I suggest you look through the posts here are "Some" of them http://android.modaco.com/index.php?act=Se...te=%2Bwhich+rom My advice install one of the 2.2 roms, much faster and more features than the 2.1's and ignore the "giffgaff" guide" its outdated. Follow one of the excellent guides on here sorry but that link doesn't clear anything up imo, most of the replies in those threads are like "wait a few days they are still unstable" or "wait for the dust to settle" (whatever that means?) and looking on the official guides there are 13 different 2.2 ROMs alone... 13!!!!! I have no idea what the differences are between these, which are most stable, which are most suited to someone who doesn't want to mod, I just want a slick faster-than-Orange android setup I can stick a bunch of apps on. Believe me I had a good look around at the other threads and they just made me even more confused, it seems like people here update to a new "froyo 2.2" version every week but I don't want to be doing that, I just want something which is stable the way it is and hassle free? also the reviews said the processor in the San Fran isn't so good, so would it be better off with older versions of android? does anyone know when google are going to release 2.2 officially? cheers ;) Edited February 1, 2011 by Jaminben
Guest Phoenix Silver Posted February 1, 2011 Report Posted February 1, 2011 i think in your case choose the r6 fibblesan rom stable free no prob with it

Guest Jaminben Posted February 1, 2011 Report Posted February 1, 2011 Hmmm I'll look into that one, so far I was thinking either play it safe and go for the standard 2.1 android just debranded, OR japanese jellyfish 2.2 or Paul's one (MoDaCo Custom Froyo ROM Beta7-11 (based on new Chinese leak)) which I believe I have to pay for somehow? Paypal?
Guest Phoenix Silver Posted February 1, 2011 Report Posted February 1, 2011 yes paypal 9.99 per year ads free for the site and paid roms
Guest thriddle Posted February 1, 2011 Report Posted February 1, 2011 I'm pretty much a beginner like you. I started off by "deorangeating" my phone, which was pretty easy, so you could always start there and build some confidence. But since then I've installed Clockwork and flashed the r6 fibblesan rom. Totally stable, no problems at all so far. I don't agree with those who say it's like night and day - the phone is fine on 2.1. But it's definitely an improvement. Good luck!
Guest Posted February 2, 2011 Report Posted February 2, 2011 (edited) http://orangesanfrancisco.co.uk/android/wh...l-a-custom-rom/ Android 2.2 is faster. Most people agree that the Japanese Jellyfish ROM is the fastest and most stable ROM for the Orange San Francisco. Follow this guide, you can do it straight from your phone. You only need a computer for the final step, which is for copying the Japanese Jellyfish ROM to the sd card. Just follow the steps - it's very simple, I promise! It's free, and takes less than 10 minutes. Edited February 2, 2011 by Guest
Guest Jaminben Posted February 2, 2011 Report Posted February 2, 2011 Ok cheers guys, phone still hasn't arrived (ordered online) but when it does I'll try out the Jellyfish ROM using that guide for now, and see how I go, maybe once Paul has the final version sorted I'll get that because it would be good to support this site etc. One final question, does the Japanese Jellyfish come with all the standard google apps installed on it? Or will I have to download them? If that is the case is there a list of apps android should come with? Cheers for all your help and sorry if I've annoyed anyone with my noobishness lol
