Guest Vortarulo Posted February 1, 2011 Report Posted February 1, 2011 Hi, Excuse me, I'm a complete newbie to smartphones and I'm currently residing in China for one year and would like to use Facebook with my HTC Desire (running on Android 2.2, already rooted). I figured it's only possible with the OpenVPN app, which needs the smartphone to be rooted (check!), BusyBox (will do) and the TUN/TAP driver to be on the phone... so this is where I stuck. I saw some postings here about exactly this, but to me they all read like Chinese (see for instance this post). I'm not computer-illiterate but throwing around words like "recovery mode", "kernel" and "MCR kitchen" doesn't help someone who just bought his first smartphone recently. Can someone explain the steps I have to follow in an idiot-proof way? In case of any questions concerning my phone's (whatever) version, just ask. Thanks, - André
Guest M Brouns Posted February 1, 2011 Report Posted February 1, 2011 Normally, when u download the MCR r9 from this site, using ROM Kitchen, you don't need to worry about whether or not Tun.ko is on your phone. You simply make sure the Facebook app is checked in the kitchen... (hope your next question won't be something like: what is ROM Kitchen? ;) )
Guest Vortarulo Posted February 1, 2011 Report Posted February 1, 2011 (edited) (hope your next question won't be something like: what is ROM Kitchen? ;) ) As I said, I am a newbie, so I don't know what this ROM Kitchen or MCR r9 is. But I now see, I should have put my question in the "Absolute Beginner" thread rather than here right away. Sorry for that. If a mod wants to move my request there, they can do so. I was trying to search an answer to my "desire" for the tun.ko driver, but couldn't find any explanations for laymans. Greetings, - André P.S.: Oh, by the way, it's not just about the Facebook App, it's more about the whole HTC Sense thingy... which includes Facebook. I can't log in there, because I'm in China. As you may have read by now, you can root your phone. This unlocks capabilities that are generally disabled by Android and/or your handset manufacturer (ie. .HTC ,Samsung, etc). When you did manage to root your phone, following Paul's great guide (here), you can then start fooling around with what software is running on your phone after you boot it up for the first time. For example: if you never use applications like HTC Stocks, Friendfeed, etc,... you can save internal memory by deselecting these options from a menu (more about that below). You do this by flashing a ROM on your phone. Flashing ROM's requires you to put your phone in "recovery mode" (done by press-holding the volume-down key en then pressing the power button). From the recovery menu pls follow the steps in the link above. MCR stands for Modaco Custom ROM, i.e. a ROM that can either be downloaded "as is" (containing standard software selected by Paul) or be "backed" (=created from the Modaco website) using the ROM Kitchen. This is a tool that Paul introduced, that makes it possible to select the items you want to include in your "personalised ROM". Every now and then, Paul introduces a new version of his Custom ROM and accompanied ROM kitchen. Most people here are using release 9 (or in short r9). Right now, Paul is working on a new release called r10. Hope this helps ;-)
