Guest Kurdt Kobain Posted February 1, 2011 Report Posted February 1, 2011 Hi guys I really love my new San Fran except for one thing that’s driving me crazy. When I go to internet forums and try to type text into the reply box there is often a huge lag between typing the letters on the keypad and seeing them appear on screen. For example if I type five or six words quickly, by the time I’ve finished typing the last one, I’ll still only be seeing perhaps the second or third word appear on the screen and have to wait for the rest to follow. It’s happening on several different forums too. It becomes really frustrating and is slowing me down considerably; it feels like trying to walk through treacle at times! I’ve done some Googling and I’ve found a few people with various Android devices suffering the same problem, seemingly without a significant solution being found. I’ve tried wiping cache, factory reset and several different ROMS but it still persists. I’ve tried the stock browser, Skyfire, Dolphin and Mirren plus various keypads but they’re all the same. The only browser that isn’t affected is Opera. I used to use Opera Mobile on my 5800 and liked it but on the San Fran the website text appears quite faint on the screen in comparison to other browsers thus spoiling my web experience in another way. Typing SMS texts and typing in other areas of my phone is completely unaffected, I’m only having this problem when typing on internet forums. Strangely the only area of these forums which is not affected is when typing into the password box upon logging in. For some reason that’s completely fine. Maybe that field uses a different kind of coding I’m not sure? I’ve found a workaround which is typing my forum replies into notepad then copy and pasting them over but surely that’s not the point is it.....? Have they sold me a faulty phone? Is anybody else having these problems, and more importantly is there a cure? Please help as this is driving me up the wall and really spoiling my enjoyment of my new phone.
Guest Azurren Posted February 1, 2011 Report Posted February 1, 2011 (edited) Yeah.. That's android for you ;) Thanks to fragmentation newer android OS's are optimized for a 1ghz+ processor (Unlike iOS that is built for specific hardware) So any intensive apps (Browser) doesn't leave much CPU for the keyboard app. If there was a way to set priories then that would defiantly help. I think there maybe but I have no idea Using a different, lighter keyboard helps, using different browsers (Opera) helps but there is no fix I'm aware of Edited February 1, 2011 by Azurren
Guest Phoenix Silver Posted February 1, 2011 Report Posted February 1, 2011 it's strange no i haven't this problem i use skyfire or base browser

OP CLearly says changing to lighter software version doesn't help, and it makes no sense for it to be due to the reasons you suggest as OP states that it doesn't occur in password boxes within browsers, so it's something about the way these browsers have their input fields set up. That said, it seems to be more a question for a browser developer than here. They could tell you the technical difference and maybe code a fix.
Guest targetbsp Posted February 1, 2011 Report Posted February 1, 2011 (edited) Have you tried different keyboards? Edited February 1, 2011 by targetbsp
Guest Kurdt Kobain Posted February 1, 2011 Report Posted February 1, 2011 Yes I've tired a few different keyboards, including Better Keyboard, but none of them fixed it. I've followed some of the advice in this link below and have managed to make it slightly better but it's still lagging. I tried first AutoKiller but my free memory was above 200mb and it was still happening (the poster said it only happened to him when his memory got below 100mb). I then tried the Autostarts app and have disabled quite a few things I don't use such as email / Gmail and voice recognition etc and it has decreased the lag slightly but it still exists. Does anyone who has used Autostarts before know which things (ie. most resource heavy) I should disable to try and address this further? Or any other methods for that matter? http://www.droidxforums.com/forum/droid-x-...yboard-lag.html
Guest Rotmann Posted February 1, 2011 Report Posted February 1, 2011 Disable what you don't need, excepting system apps.
Guest targetbsp Posted February 1, 2011 Report Posted February 1, 2011 (edited) I have a lot disabled in autostarts and quite a lot of system apps simply uninstalled too. The only system things I have running are: contacts storage, download manager, media storage, com.android.qualcomm, android system, market, google services framework, dialer, settings (power control) Mostly those required for basic phone, sd card and market functionality. And the qualcomm thing cause i have no idea what it is. ;) Tasker uses settings (power control) to toggle the gps. If you use a third party toggle (such as widgetsoid) and don't use tasker then you can disable settings (power control) too Obviously if you regularly use certain functionality that I've disabled - then don't disable it on yours. ;) And then, only the apps I want running all the time: tasker, sms popup, widgetsoid, app brain, swype I have 314mb of free ram and only 14 processes running after boot up Edited February 1, 2011 by targetbsp

It happens on every Budget device I have owned / had access to (T-Mobile Pulse, Pulse mini, Spica) but seems a lot better or even perfect on the Desire/Galaxy S Ofc I drew my own conclusions based on my experience. So I can't be wrong ;) Actually Skyfire is the worst browser with this issue.. Everything seems really sluggish (iPlayer ;)) Edited February 1, 2011 by Azurren
Guest targetbsp Posted February 1, 2011 Report Posted February 1, 2011 I've just tried it in X Scope and I see what you mean. I've never really noticed it before because of the way Swype works. You don't really interact with the actual input box at all - you just handle it a word at a time in the keyboard itself.

Overclocking is the only thing that has reduced this for me, either that or turning off predictive text goodies. It seems to be the automatic correction that really sucks the CPU.
Guest Frankish Posted February 1, 2011 Report Posted February 1, 2011 I have this issue on all roms i've tried. However i've only ever used 2.2 roms. Anyone use a 2.1 rom and not had this issue? I have it on Japanese Jellyfish all versions. FLB all versions Modaco Froyo all versions. I type fast and i can get to 8 words then i have to stop and they appear maybe one or two at a time. Normal texting etc is brilliant no problem.
Guest Kurdt Kobain Posted February 1, 2011 Report Posted February 1, 2011 I'm considering reverting back to a 2.1 ROM and seeing if that makes any difference. I don't recall any lag when using the Orange stock ROM, which of course is 2.1, although admittedly I only used that for a few days after first getting the phone. I've already tried the overclocking Jelly ROM and it didn't make any difference. My gf is getting her San Fran delivered tomorrow so it will be interesting to compare the two and see if her's lags too.
Guest Frankish Posted February 1, 2011 Report Posted February 1, 2011 I have my San Fran overclocked at 710mhz and it doesn't seem to make the slightest difference. I just wish modaco was tapatalk compatible. Only forums i really use frequently is XDA and Modaco and XDA is on Tapatalk. No lag in apps at all. Has anyone tried the MIUI browser at all? Or a 2.1 rom browser? Although i'm sure it probably goes deeper than just the browser version.
Guest clivec Posted February 1, 2011 Report Posted February 1, 2011 FWIW I have the same issue on the blade, always have, no matter what ROM is being used, I think its just down to the processing power of the device as i've had a good number of android devices and never noticed it on any others, even on an se x10 mini (using better k'board). It's summat we'll just have to put up with tbh, but hey! for a hundred quid.......... ;)
