I have read about installing a new ROM but dont quite get what they might offer. Are there videos somehere that show the benefits of upgrading?

network unlocked and rooted

Updating the ROM will not unlock the handset from the network. See the sticky posts for unlocking first before updating the ROM.

I've just updated my Orange San Francisco to Modaco Froyo 2.2 (r6) and the difference from stock Orange is amazing. It is definitely worth the few minutes it takes to do so. Main benefits I would say are:

1. The phone and entire UI are much more responsive and everything is much smoother and quicker

2. It removes all the Orange branding and useless apps you don't want (which hog internal memory and eat resources)

3. It will look more like standard Android phone and therefore you can customise it to how you like

4. Some ROMs unlock the phone (so you can use SIMs from any network)

5. You benefit from all the improvements that Android 2.1 offers over 2.2 which are summarised here by Google

MCR R6 is antique dude (5 versions behind), get the FLB Froyo or the de-crossed one, they rock.
