Contacts list weirdness

Added all my contacts from old phone by transferring vcf file, which worked fine. Contacts appear in the order Firstname Surname in the contacts list, and have synced up to GMail contacts fine. The problem is that if I add a new contact on the phone, and populate the fields in the same was as an existing contact, they then appear in the contacts list in the order Surname Firstname. If I compare the contacts info by going into 'edit contact' for both an old and a new entry, they look the same, yet look different in the list?

What is going on - am I missing a setting or is this a weird bug?
