Ripping Vega's codecs for other devices

Noticed today that quite a lot of video files will play fine on the Vega, but won't play at all on my Desire ("Sorry, this video could not be played", or else just black screen when it tries). The files aren't anything remarkable in terms of resolution or bitrate; it must be a question of codec support.

That makes me wonder whether the Vega codecs can be ripped out and included in (for instance) MCR r10 for the Desire. Wouldn't that be nice?

(It's possible that they're all compiled specifically for the Tegra2, of course. I don't know.)

I can provide more details, or a short test clip, if needed.

Aren't there other roms for the desire that provide better codecs?

Well, possibly. I wasn't aware of that. Do you have one in mind?

If so, maybe I could persuade Paul to include them in his MCR build. As far as I'm aware, they're a fairly low-level thing, so can't easily be installed afterwards. But I'd love to be proved wrong on that point...

I would assume that most of the support is in the Tegra2 hardware, and therefore not something you could shift to other devices.

There's a ridiculously long list of codecs featured on the Tegra2 spec page (http://www.nvidia.com/object/tegra-2.html) including Google's shiny new WebM format (VP8 video and Vorbis audio), VP6 and Sorenson Spark for legacy flash content, even oddballs like Ogg Theora and Real Video as well as the usual suspects from MPEG and Microsoft.

Having said that, if the files aren't too big I'd guess you could get software to decode most of these on most devices, just not from code that assumes Tegra2 hardware support.

I don't have a desire so can't talk definitively about different roms for it. However if I was looking for one I would go over to XDA and look at the different roms they have available.

Nothing hardware accelerated is going to work as its different hardware so its a no go.
