where are SMSs/texts stored?

Very n00bish question but where are texts stored, on the phone or on the SD card?

Just I keep getting a lot of messages saying my phone is getting full....... I don't have THAT many apps and the ones it lists aren't that huge. Are texts stored on the SD card as default? And photos? I'm sure any music/photos I have are on the SD card :/

with the stock messaging app, they are stored in a sqlite database in the data partition.
