Guest seraphim2017 Posted February 4, 2011 Report Posted February 4, 2011 (edited) Hi guys, I'm looking at a new handset, and rooting issues aside, which set of hardware offers the best pereformance stock? both seem to have sescond gen A8 baased 800mhz with GPU chips, and 512mb RAM (I think) Then, which set of hardware offers the best performance modded? The ruggedness of the defy really appeals (i dropped my last handset!) but the lack of 2.2 will bug me! Ta Jim Uses: Gaming (if android gaming ever takes off!) Surfing the internet camera (still and video) some music listening oh, ,and calls/texts too! (currently running LCR-F 2.0 on my A1!) Edited February 4, 2011 by seraphim2017
Guest habrahabr Posted February 4, 2011 Report Posted February 4, 2011 I'd prefer Defy ) Motorola's device's is quite good, even with 500 mgh(Motorola Milestone) what is more, defy is undestructable ;))
Guest seraphim2017 Posted February 4, 2011 Report Posted February 4, 2011 (edited) Defy = Locked bootloader = fail I thought the defy had been rooted? regardless of tweaks, hardware wise, are the processors and GPU's a match? Edited February 4, 2011 by seraphim2017
Guest xdxdxdxdxdx Posted February 4, 2011 Report Posted February 4, 2011 i prefer metal.adreno 205 performance better than sgx530 a lot!!!even if it higher than sgx535.msm7230 can oc to 1.5g.defy only can oc to 1.2g or not. So,metal better than defy in gaming.metal support 720p.metal support dobly mobile.
Guest Raskell Posted February 4, 2011 Report Posted February 4, 2011 (edited) I finally replace my A1 after having it and upgrading it for a year. This is the longest I have ever had the same phone and I still hated to move on because the A1 has been so extensively supported here and at other forums. Rooting, unlocking, upgrading, & flashing roms are all part of it as it keeps our devices fresh and at the leading edge of new developments. As for me, I chose the Liquid Metal and it is a welcomed kin to the A1. I was considering the 'wow' factor of the Motorola Atrix (upcoming) and really wanted to hold out for a Tegra 2 handset and Gingerbread or Honeycomb, but seeing, holding and having the Liquid Metal in hand confirms to me the good choice it makes for an A1 replacement. More memory, adequately fast processor, FROYO, unlocked, rooted, etc. . . Just needing it's own support forum and ROM support for 2.3->3.0 Edited February 4, 2011 by Raskell
Guest HustlinDaily Posted February 4, 2011 Report Posted February 4, 2011 According to the Smartbench forums, the Defy scored Android 2.1 @1.1Ghz: 712/2100 (first value is productivity, second value is gaming). Unable to find any Smartbench results on the Liquid Metal but here is something I found for Desire Z (same processor as Liquid Metal): "Running CM6, with stock speed of 800mhz, I get 988 and 1367 Overclocked to 1.5ghz, I get 1679 and 2121" Soooo I think Defy might be better for gaming but Qualcomm better for everything else and when overclocked, just as good for gaming. I'd say get the Liquid Metal. Unencrypted bootloader included, it is a damn good phone.
Guest bais Posted February 4, 2011 Report Posted February 4, 2011 I though Adreno 205 was close to PowerSGX 540 (Galaxy S) So I don't get how Power SGX 530 can perform better in gaming xD .
Guest seraphim2017 Posted February 4, 2011 Report Posted February 4, 2011 I though Adreno 205 was close to PowerSGX 540 (Galaxy S) So I don't get how Power SGX 530 can perform better in gaming xD . The only reviews I can find on adreno vs powervr show the 205 vs the 540, and it shows the theoretical (i.e bandwidth always stops the maximum figure!) maximums of both. As far as I have been able to work out, powervr 530 is around 2-3 times adreno 200. adreno 205 is 4x adreno 200, and powervr 540 is faster than 205, but then depends on how it's used byb proicessor, so good 205 engineering will beat poor 540 engineering due to buffer rates and clocking. Then againn, i'm not an expert, that's why i asked! ;) To be honest, angry birds plays fine on my A1, and skips on my ipod touch 2g (i wonder what GPU the ipod touch 2g has?!). I'm more thinking about the next year or two, and 2.2-2.3-?? with games like NOVA 2 etc..!
Guest Raskell Posted February 4, 2011 Report Posted February 4, 2011 On SmartBench 2010 I am getting like 800/1300 with the stock Liquid Metal and 800 MHz. Results vary from run to run but these seem to be realistic values. Quadrant is ~1250 which is identical to the Droid X 2.2 and Linpack is ~32 MFLOPS which is similar tothe Galaxy S at 1 GHz.
Guest Posted February 5, 2011 Report Posted February 5, 2011 Metal is an excellent choice for a moderatly priced device ;) Not the best but one of the best bang for your bucks out there. If you want custom ROM head over to the "other" section of this forum and you'll find the Metallounay ROM from vache. It's based on the latest Acer official update (1.100.16), Acer stuff removed, oc'able kernel, and optimisation. My Metal runs really great with this. Enjoy.
Guest seraphim2017 Posted February 6, 2011 Report Posted February 6, 2011 Thanks for all the responses! No nearer to knowing which one though! Does anyone know the clock for clock comparison of adreno 205 vss SGX530 and Omap vs Qualcomm? Or does it just come down to if i'm going to continue being a clumsy oaf, but the toughere handseet, if i can be careful, buy the nicer looker! Do you think the defy will get 2.2 officially? (Anyone know if it can be rooted?) and will that improve it's speed any?
Guest HustlinDaily Posted February 6, 2011 Report Posted February 6, 2011 https://supportforums.motorola.com/communit...oftwareupgrades European Defy & Asian Defy has an upgrade planned for Q2 2011 Motorola phones (since Milestone) have encrypted bootloaders. The phones can be rooted and ROMs based on stock ROM/Motorola ROMs can boot but ROMs outside of stock ROM (Cyanogen, AOSP, etc) are unable to boot. There are ports for the Defy (some based on Motorola leaks) but all of them seem somewhat buggy- http://forum.xda-developers.com/forumdisplay.php?f=855
