r10 RIP - how to move on tutorial

Ok guys, I'm so frustrated with the release and communication attitude here that I shopped around for something new. And I'm so happy that I did! I'm now on a Desire Z ROM with all the nice new features of Sense coming with the HD/Z models. It is really worth it (in my opinion).

<rant>I realized that once I accepted that I need to leave the simplicity and safety of Paul's kitchen, the world out there is much more colourful and advanced. But I had quite a learning curve and still don't understand everything I did to the fullest. In that respect, it doesn't help that quite a few developers love their acronyms and talk about all this "BFS kernel" stuff, which by the way means a kernel with brain badword scheduler (whatever that is). The newbies annoy the experts with their endless seemingly stupid questions (what's the difference between a2sd, data2ext and data2sd?) and often get the answer: use the search function. Hey, not every newbie is a n00b. But who wants to spend half their live researching technical details?</rant>

Ok, so for all the other guys who are as lost in all this as I am, here is what I did (coming from a rooted Desire with MCR r9 ROM, ROM Manager and ClockworkMod Recovery that I got via unrevoked rooting):

• Install Titanium Backup from the Market, spend the few bucks for the paid version and do a full backup of everything
  
• Install SMS Backup & Restore from the Market, as Titanium sometimes has trouble with SMS (at least for me) and do a full backup
  
• Reboot into recovery by holding down the power button, selecting reboot and selecting recovery
  
• Do a full (so call NANDROID) backup of everything. This will even save your ROM and all. If you get stuck later, this is your return ticket.
  
• Reboot back into the Desire and access it from a PC, then copy everything (including hidden files starting with a dot) from your SD card to the PC as backup
  
• Download the CoolZ v3 ROM to your PC
  
• Don't forget the extra scripts from the post above, i.e. also download: alignment-ext4.zip, a2sd_remover_Cool.zip, Data2sd_Installer_Cool.zip
  
• Get a different kernel (the one included in the CoolZ ROM didn't work for me, caused me a lot of trouble with bootloops). I used Ziggy471 Beta Kernel BRAVO BFS HAVS 21 Jan 11 (120) (yes, BFS is the brain badword scheduler)
  
• I also abandoned ClockworkMod recovery and now use AmonRA which I feel is more versatile. Your choice, but if you want to follow me steps, download AmonRA as well
  
• To install AmonRA on your device, you might want to use unrevoked, go get it
  
• Now you have all the bits and pieces you need. We will wipe your card and repartition it. Everything will be gone, but you did your backup as described above, right?
  
• Unplug your device from your PC and start unrevoked
  
• Unrevoked waits to find your device - don't plugin just now, but first go into the menu of unrevoked and select the AmonRA image file that you downloaded as recovery image
  
• Now plugin your device and unrevoked do its magic, after that your device is rooted and AmonRA is installed as recovery system
  
• Boot into recovery, e.g. by holding the volume-down button and switching on the device, waiting a bit, then use volume up/down to move to the recovery menu item and press the power button to select it
  
• Once you're on the green AmonRA screen, you can navigate with the trackball. Select the partitioning menu and start partitioning your SD card. I used 0 swap, 1024 ext and the rest goes to FAT32 automatically.
  
• After partitioning, let's upgrade the ext2 partition first to ext3 and then to ext4 via the partitioning menu in AmonRA
  
• Now go back to the main menu and do a full wipe of everything
  
• You can now select USB-MS toggle to mount your SD card on the PC
  
• On the PC you should be able to see the large partition from the SD card as a drive. You might also see the 1GB ext4 partition, but please ignore it
  
• Copy the CoolZ v3 ROM file, the Ziggy kernel file and the three .zip scripts coming with CoolZ to the SD card
  
• Stop the drive on the PC to safely unplug it, or use the USB-MS toggle menu in AmonRA after everything has been copied over
  
• First we will align your ext4 partition. Go to the Flash zip from sdcard menu item and select the alignment-ext4.zip file
  
• After that has completed, do not reboot but now flash the CoolZ ROM, again via the Flash zip from sdcard menu entry
  
• After that has completed, do not reboot but now flash the a2sd_remover file
  
• Now you can reboot. Give it some time and hope for the best. Once you're inside the Desire, just skip through the setup wizard and don't just yet give your Google login or create any other account. You can do that later.
  
• Instead, reboot back to recovery (holding down power button, selecting reboot, then recovery)
  
• Now flash the data2sd_installer zip file
  
• Reboot once more and you're almost done
  
• Inside the new Sense (yes, it looks advanced from the original Desire interface) you can first go through the setup wizard and setup your accounts (you have to start it manually from the apps).
  
• Then go to the market and get Titanium backup and SMS backup
  
• Connect your PC again and copy your backup of the SD card back to the device
  
• The CoolZ ROM has left out the Google applications that are on the market anyway, so get Google Mail and Youtube and also Flash
  
• Use Titanium to restore all your apps and data. I did not restore any system apps as there were new ones now (obviously). I also did not restore any system data as I don't know if anything in the system databases has changed. For me, this was only WiFi anyway.
  
• Also, I didn't restore contacts and calendar, as these come synced over from Google. You loose your links, however, between Facebook, Twitter and the Google contacts. Not much of a problem for me.
  

That's it as far as I can remember. It worked for me, it might or might not work for you. It's cooler than any MCR ROM (and faster) but you might disagree. The new Sense from the HD/Z is great and a good step forward. I hope this tutorial takes a bit of the pain out of the process.

Don't expect any help from me, but ask over at XDA in the posts of CoolZ, Ziggy471 or AmonRA. It's their work, it's their credit!

Two more points:

• I had a problem installing Gmail from the market in my country. Should you experience the same, use My Market to get it anyway. Unfortunately, My Market seems to be removed from the market and you need to Google to find it.
  
• Titanium failed to restore some market links. I used QuikMarketLinks to fix that

So please write something constructive and helpful. It shouldn't be your problem if I'm happy to share my learnings with others that don't want to waste their time searching around the forums.

How is this constructive? If you're a n00b you obey forum rules and SEARCH FIRST. If you can't find the answer THEN you ask a question.

And yes, EVERYTHING you've said is available online to those who are bothered to actually do some research. This is how you learn, you don't just expect it to be handed to you on a plate.

I've been a member on here since the Desire was released but I'm also on XDA and Android Forums and I've hardly ever asked a question as I do the right thing - work it out for myself

Posting a pointless rant where there are plenty of other places to go to for information is just stupid. Paul has God knows how many different Android devices so of course new ones are going to take precedent over older ones. I don't hold anything against him and he's probably in the same mind that there is enough of a community to make ROMs now that he doesn't have to

It is a good thread for bringing sources of information together - that is what happens with progress... as information is made more readily accessible to people, those same people can more readily build upon the information provided.

While I accept the point that Paul, who I wholeheartedly respect, is very busy and therefore the tone of the post is not entirely appropriate I cannot criticise Kongo for putting together a post which is informative and helpful.

Wherever possible information SHOULD be put on a plate, I would not expect to build a rocket send it into space and take photos of the Earth just to find out that the Earth is round.

For people who want a more in depth knowledge of the process of course the opportunity is there to carry out more detailed research - nevertheless those that share their experiences and collect together information to the benefit of the community should be applauded not berated.

If you can't be bothered to actually find the information yourself then you shouldn't be rooting in the first place

Also, if you want a ROM based on the HD/Z - get it from Robocik. All others are copies of his work or slightly changed. Go straight for the best

This isn't about proving ability or acquiring knowledge it's about not f**king up an expensive piece of kit.

More people who join the community = the more development that will go on. For those unsure or weary, the guides are a godsend.

Perhaps we could abolish the need for driving instructors, people could just buy a car and learn how to drive by following the examples of others?! ;)

On most Desire forums are a sticky thread on how to root using unrEVOked and most ROM threads set out the pre-requisites needed to run the ROM (partitions, etc). There are also guides on how to partition your SD card. Given, this forum is short on said guides but this is why you join other forums to get the information. The only thing that can't be 'guided' is what ROM to use as they're individual choices. This is why I've learnt how to make my own as none of the ROMs on offer do what I require (which isn't a lot but I get 48hrs life on my normal use so I' happy)

When really, we should just make bare bones ROMs, users can install what the hell they want afterwards.

I think the OP just wanted to show the noobs that you dont have to stay on MCR, for some they feel obliged because they paid some money to get access to the kitchens. Truth is, in my opinion, that once you have used the kitchen once or twice, you have got a return on your money.

I've used the kitchen exactly twice. Once to test it and the second time to use (read: steal and add to my rom) some nice apps that Paul included.

IMHO the best way would be to make a bare bones rom and then an extra package that includes the stuff that was stripped out. I love Robocik's roms but they have too many changes so I usually use his rom as a base, strip out all the junk I don't need to get a bare bones rom, and change the framework.apk to its default state. That's how I get a nice stock like HD Sense rom and then work from there.

Hopefully this thread might encourage a few people to try different roms (although i have to admit the list of instructions looks far more daunting than thought).

I would also encourage anyone into their ROM swapping to try out MIUI as i've found it to be fantastic.

EddyOS, I notice from your sig that you are no longer running MIUI. Any reason why?

I think the jist of this thread is to say that the MCR isn't the ONLY ROM available for the Desire. There is a whole world of variation available if you venture out the confines of MoDaCo

I pretty much live on XDA these days - bit more 'geeky' but people know their stuff!

And for me to add my word on the subject - Nice post Kongo... its posts like this, simple and informative that will prevent so calls 'Noobs' from asking 'Stupid' questions. There appears to be an elitist attitude on some of these forums and the masses of information and differing opinions will only lead to confusion, more likely to result in a knackered phone

And to add a rather excellent ROM to the mix of alternatives, BAADNEWZ, INSERT COIN 1.8F is truly awesome and all Sense is included...it is constantly developing and is rock solid...In my view its the best

Sub501's kernels (have swap functionality) work very well as do the Coutts kernels, both of which are nice and speedy ;)

you've commited a lot to the community already, thanks for that ;) and kongo is starting to commit to the community too, so don't be pissed, just let us newbies help ourselves and mayby get to your level sometime. When I was new to the modding scene I was always thankful for some structured tutorial, because in the meantime the forums are so junked up that relevant information can be hard to find. A tut can save a whole lot of time or serve as a source inspiration. And XDA is a real jungle, wonderful but also a bit dangerous ;)

Actually I think kongo rounded up some good info and while it's olds for you it's news for some, if not all then parts of his post.

Too many people post different 'guides', though - which leads to MORE confusion. I didn't follow any, I just used the information provided by the people who made the thing I was trying to do (Paul for originally rooting the Desire, and then the unrEVOked team). I didn't use someone's version of doing it - I used the OFFICIAL method of doing it and it worked.

Extra guides lead to confusion and even greater chance of doing damage so where I understand the OP I still feel it was a bit pointless other than a 'look at me' exercise. This is just my take on it and if it helps others out then fair enough. But the more people that properly tag posts where possible so searching gives better results then it means more information can be kept to one location as opposed to multiple posts, the better

When i paid my subscription I don't recall anyone telling me "You have to search before you ask a question", or "you must not ask silly questions", or "you must put up with utter pillocks like EddyOS".

Before you ask, I am an IT professional, Honours Degree (taken many years ago when they were still f*cking hard to get), and an absolute novice when it comes to Android who needs all the help I can get....so, to the original poster....THANK YOU VERY MUCH FOR YOUR REALLY HELPFUL POST.
