Guest Cant-think-of-one Posted February 4, 2011 Report Posted February 4, 2011 Hi all, found this forum whilst trying to find a cheap Android tab for my Wifes birthday present. The Advent Vega seems to tick all the boxes, it just needs a mondaco mod to enable the marketplace. So, Googling mondaco finally brings me here and suddenly it doesn't seem quite so straightforward... Please bear with me, I've been reading lots of posts and trying to work this out for myself but I don't even understand what I'm reading ;) So, is it correct that in order to use market place on the Vega I have to "FLASH" THE ROM (delete it and replace it with something else?) If so, given that I have no idea what kernels and apk's actually are, would I be better off looking elsewhere for a tablet that is more numpty friendly? Or, is there a real easy idiots guide somewhere for people like me that struggle to operate even the simplest things? Or, (he says hopefully) is there a paid app or similar that I could just click on that will sort it all out for me? Sorry for the stupid questions, I'm sure you get this all the time but I have searched lots and just don't understand what I'm seeing which is why I'm wondering if maybe the Vega isn't the right choice after all. Thanks in advance, Chris
Guest worto03 Posted February 4, 2011 Report Posted February 4, 2011 hi, I think now things have just got a lot easier, as far as I can tell all you have to install now is this :- linky which does the lot - personally I don't use the clockwork way of doing things mostly because I don't really understand what it is and people have been having a bit of trouble with it in the past but there are instructions in the 1st post to do it via windows.
Guest SilentMobius Posted February 4, 2011 Report Posted February 4, 2011 (edited) Hmm, I'm not sure if the Vega is the best purchase. The main question is, what would your Wife use it for? The thing is that with any community created modification there _will_ be problems, when that happens will your Wife ask you or will she just stop using the device? The Vega is a great toy to hack on I use mine every day. But I spend a lot of time overcoming hurdles as, for me, its worth the extra X hundred pounds and X months wait I would have needed to buy a completed product (And the Vega is pretty incomplete even with all of Paul's hard work) Personally I wouldn't buy the Vega as a gift unless the recipient was a know techie. Sorry if that's not the answer you wanted. Edited February 4, 2011 by SilentMobius

Thanks in advance, Chris Hi Chris I think that much will depend upon your knowledge of either Windows, Linux or the Mac. For example if you look at the link given above by worto03 - the sections: '•If you are using Windows, your USB 'Android Developer Bridge' driver MUST be the one included in this download (use 'Have Disk' functionality in device manager to change if required) •Download the zip file of your choice from the links below (or the online kitchen) and extract on your Windows PC, Linux PC or Mac' If these do not make much sense to you, then perhaps the Vega is not for you. The standard software which the Vega come with is very limited, and does not include the features of the Modaco mods which are detailed in the link. Maybe an expensive iPad (which unfortunately comes without Flash) is the answer, or wait for some other cheaper more functional tablet to come on the scene.
Guest Cant-think-of-one Posted February 4, 2011 Report Posted February 4, 2011 (edited) That's extremely helpful, thanks all. The main thing she's be using it for is just as an extension of her phone really. She's quite into the games, apps, facebook browsing etc (she has the Nexus S) so it would really just be used as a toy. I'll have a good look through the links provided this evening and decide from there, but it could well be that the Vega is in fact a poor choice as nether of us are techies in any way. Saying that though, I'd happily spend months learning my way round the thing if it avoids buying another Apple product ;) Cheers, Chris Edited February 4, 2011 by Cant-think-of-one
Guest worto03 Posted February 4, 2011 Report Posted February 4, 2011 Saying that though, I'd happily spend months learning my way round the thing if it avoids buying another Apple product lol - then go for it! My GF uses mine - I've had to install the apps I think she might want to use on it and give her a home page and if it doesn't work for any reason she just moans at me until I fix it but she loves it now. I'm learning a lot about android as I go along and there are a lot of helpful people around to help out (especially on here). I definitely wouldn't buy one as a gift for my dad in fact I just bought him an iphone! but it's a bit different when it's for someone who lives in the same house as you as long as you don't mind putting the time in to fix it when it needs some messing. I do wish my GF would at least have a browse around the marketplace to see what apps she might want - it's hard to guess what a woman wants ;)

I see the ipads are relatively affordable now, but thats just not an option for me unfortunately, not unless the OS can easily be switched to Froyo :D It's unfortunate that her birthday is in a couple of weeks time, it looks as if a flood of new stuff will be coming out this Year from what I can make out.

Mate, I didn't have a clue what any of that stuff means, still don't but with the help of some of the kind souls on this forum, some youtube videos and a bit of time I managed to get Paul's rom going, now I can't put the thing down. I even went and got an android phone I was that impressed. Go for it, the best 250 quid you'll spend

I've done it, ordered my Vega, should be here in a few days ;) I already have an Android phone, I'm a huge fan of Android so an Android tablet seemed to be the way to go. I watched some of the excellent walkthrough vids on here last night, didn't look half as scary when you see it like that, so hopefully I'll be able to sort it out.
