Earphone out *without* cutting off handset mic?

Sorry for the daft question but is it possible to connect earphones and not cut off the handset's built in mic?

As far as I am aware of this can't be done with android, I looked into it myself a few months back as I wanted to use my cars speakers to output sound and still use the internal mic
