I have recently acquired my first Android. A ZTE BLADE.

I would like to install a new ROM.

In order to do not lose warranty I would like to make a complete backup. So if I ever need to use the warranty I just restore this backup.

I could understand that:

• an android device as 3 partitions. Boot, recovery, ROM.

• In order to install a new rom one need to:

o Root the device;

o Install a recovery manager;

o Flash the rom.

In this way in case one need to use warranty, the seller may see that one has a new recovery manager. So one losses warranty because changed the software.

To prevent this I would like to do a complete backup, of all 3 partitions. So I may restore the device to its actual state.

Anyone has any idea on how to achive this backup?

I read something about Total Phone Transfer, but I could not realize how it works. Where to find it.

TPT works in the other direction, it flashes images to the phone. Seb has an application somewhere for dumping images of boot, recovery and system, but there are stock images in the forum. I don't know if this one normally has the recovery images (hosting is down) but they are somewhere too I believe.

• an android device has 4 partitions. Boot, Recovery, System, Data.

o Root the device. No. You can install clockworks recovery mod and install the new rom from there

use this to dump your rom:

http://android.podtwo.com/romdump/

or use one of the already prepared stock roms that are posted in the rom subforum

Sorry. I did not understand this part.

Don’t I have to root in order to install clockworks recovery? Dont I need SU permissions to install it?

I have no problem with rom partition. I can dump it and restore it later, in case i need.

My problem is by installing clockworks recovery mod into the recover partition without a backup of this partition I will lose warranty. The seller can easily find that I changed the software (he just needs to reboot into recover mode). isn’t it?

I was thinking. Is there a way to mount the android device in a Windows, or linux, PC and make a Complete backup of all partitions?

No you dont need to root it

Do a romdump so you will have a 'clean' recovery.img before you install clockworks mod.

Read the guides in the forum, everything is already posted countless times

First of all thank you for the replay.

I have read all I could find in the forum. I may have misunderstood things. If it is the case I Appolagize for that.

I understood that I could only backup rom partition. I see now by your statement that I may also romdump every other partition and get, in this way, a backup image. Isn’t it?

I will look for this romdump application and try it. In case I am able to :P .

I told him to get a romdump for the recovery.img (and maybe boot.img too?).

Once he got the recovery.img, he can then flash clockworks in and take a full backup from there

You get the identical boot.img from romdump and nandroid backup.

Yes but you can't nandroid without installing clockwork, which overwrites recovery.

Just use Romdump as vareBlade says. He linked it for you in post 3.

Yeah, you need both.

Romdump -> recovery.img, boot.img

Nandroid -> system.img, boot.img

I am new to android (totally green). I thought it would be difficult to romdump my device.

Amazingly I did it (I think). I am so proud of myself.

I did install JDK, then installed Android SDK.

Finally I run romdump according to readme instructions.

It executed successfully without errors.

Now the hard part … I could not find dumped files. I appreciate any help here.

According to readme instructions dumped files should be found at SDRoot. But they are not there.

Check the names of every folder in your Sd card. There should be a folder named like your build id (for example mine was: ZTE_P729BV1.0.0B02).

Inside it there are 6 files:

boot.img

recovery.img

checksum.md5

config.gz

system.info.gz

system.tar.gz

Are you sure you did everything that Seb404 says in here: http://android.podtwo.com/romdump/ ?

There are 2 ways to do it, 1 with adb and 1 with terminal

It worked. The difference was that when I connected the device to the PC, it prompted to Access SD Card in order to be able to transfer files between the device and PC (something like that I cant precise). This time my answer was NO.

And it was it.

I have now the files.

Next step clockworks recovery mod.
