Newbie with a Droid 2 / Milestone 2

Hi all,

I'm a relative newbie to Android devices (got my Droid 2 / Milestone 2 in November). I'm finding it's a bit sluggish, drains battery a bit too quick and the time does not update properly! A couple of friends have suggested that I root it and guided me to this site - however I don't have a clue what to do next!

Can anyone kindly guide me to any posts which detail what I need & a step by step guide to rooting my phone? Oh, and any recommendation on the most stable flavour of OS would be much appreciated too!
