Guest IndyUK Posted February 10, 2011 Report Posted February 10, 2011 Hi, I'm somewhat confused about the video files the Vega can (or cannot) play. I'm sure I read somewhere that the vega supports avi,mp4,mpg. But when I try and play these over the network I get a "not supported" error message. I'm beginning to think that I've spent my money for nothing. I wanted to primarily use this tablet as a media player for all my media stored on my Ubuntu server. However, I just keep finding problems with this device. I've got the "sticky" keyboard problem which makes typing very difficult but i over looked that because it wasn't going to be required much for typing. But not being able to play videos over the network is just getting on my nerves. I was actually at one point thinking of selling my iPad but now I'll hold onto it as I'm not sure whether the Vega is going to work out. I'm using the ES File Explorer to locate files on my network and launching them directly from there. If anyone can assist me in this I'd appreciate it. Thanks

Thanks Which player are you using, there are a number available and they play different file formats. I use Movies, Rockplayer and Arcmedia. I also use Tversity to stream files to the player via a web browser, probably worth looking at something that can do that on Linux.

Thanks I just read that Ubuntu has MediaTomb UPnP server since Hardy. So that'd suggest you can use the UPnPlayer app on the vega. It seems you should even be able to set up transcoding in MediaTomb via VLC. Worth investigating at mediatomb.cc Edited February 11, 2011 by jasonic8
Guest warriorscot Posted February 11, 2011 Report Posted February 11, 2011 Using the right apps for streaming is the biggest issue without the right app you won't get anything to play at all. There are a few but you can't just use the native straight from a file browser in most cases. It plays most video formats and all the ones you mentioned. It won't play the proprietary Dolby audio formats which isn't too unusual for many devices.
Guest IndyUK Posted February 11, 2011 Report Posted February 11, 2011 Thanks guys for your recommendations. I will look into these. I already have Mediatomb running and some files do work and most not. I think it must be down to codecs. Shame really as I really had high hopes of using my Vega as a media device. Maybe Android 3.0 may help, if it ever gets on the Vega. Thanks anyway guys.
