uh. thats illegal.

+1. Thats 5 years in the UK.

Your IMEI was probably blocked for a reason... How about you give the phone back to the original owner?

Well there is an awkward situation I have; if you want to use your mobile in Turkey with a Turkish GSM provider, you need to register your mobile. It is purely to prevent untaxed imports. All phones which imported through the customs are registered.Personally you have right to register a single mobile in every two years it is not considered as an import.I registered my mobile before and guess what it was stolen here.I received a replacement phone from my insurance, however this phone will stop working when I go to Turkey on summer since its IMEI is different nor I will be able to use it or register since it hasn't been two years.

PS I'm not looking for an IMEI change solution simply I use my old mobile, just wanted to tell how things can be bizarre :P

From what I understand, the IMEI of all "modern" phones is burnt into ROM in a one-time operation so without really specialist equipment, recoding a handset's IMEI number is practically impossible.

Not to mention illegal, regardless of the reason behind the need to do it.

Sorry... :D

This is a forum viewed by everyone in the world. It isn't illegal to change your IMEI in many places!

Are you trying to claim it is illegal to change your IMEI in say -- Haiti? Anartica? Canada (no!)? Other places you don't know the local laws about?

And no, hogwash about "why would you want to do that, if not because you stole the phone" doesn't wash. That's like claiming the only reason you'd paint a car, is because you stole it!

There are lots of legitimate reasons to change an IMEI. One is this business with Turkey (If I change an IMEI before I enter Turkey, I've certainly done nothing illegal here in Canada). Another might be that you want to remain anonymous. Remaining anonymous is NOT illegal. Nor are IMEI changes, at least here!

You do know that there are forums for learning how to lock pick around the world, yes? Even *possessing* lock picking tools in *some* countries is illegal, if you aren't a registered locksmith. So what? Does that mean people should try to shut down all conversations to the effect, if it's illegal in their country?

I won't say you were trying to do that, but I will say that regardless of your intent, your words had that effect.

well there is stolen phones then there is terrorism... granted that there may be legitimate reasons to change IMEIs but 99% would be for that illegal reason... plus why would you want to remain anonymous to the authorities unless you were doing something wrong or just crazy paranoid.

Well, seeing as this is a UK-based forum you wouldn't be allowed to post such information, or links to it, so this is a valid reponse to an illegal act in the UK

If the OP has a legitimate reason to changing the IMEI then they can find it elsewhere
